  • The nose is all animale and sauvage. It’s bloody, it’s stony, and with a lot of horse sweat and a some capsicum. There is also savory blackberry fruit but really it is not about fruit at all. On the palate it is medium-bodied with good structure. 2014 is not a ripe vintage and this wine represents that well. It has plenty of heft but a ripe wine it is not. The grip is quite wonderful. This is a very honest wine that does not try too hard to win its drinker over.

  • 100% Syrah that is sourced from two vineyards - one in Saint-Péray (including portions planted in 1895) and one younger vineyard planted just outside the Cornas appellation, at the foot of the slopes of Cornas. In some vintages some declassified Cornas from younger vineyards or press wine from the Cornas wines might be blended in. Vinified in whole bunches, fermented spontaneously in concrete tanks. After the MLF some of the wine is racked into oak foudres. 12% alcohol.

Luminous, slightly evolved garnet-to-cherry-red color that permits some light through. The nose feels somewhat funky and a bit closed with aromas of smoky reduction and animale nuances of brett, ripe blackberries and red plums, some earthy tones, a little bit of juicy bilberry, light floral notes of violets, a hint of game and a sweeter touch of soft dark plum. The wine is dry, savory and quite airy on the palate with a medium body and slightly restrained flavors of meaty umami and phenolic spice, some funky leather notes, a little bit of blood and game, light brambly notes of blackberries, a sweeter hint of blueberry and a touch of bacon or other salt-cured meat. The wine is medium-to-moderately high in acidity with gentle, suave tannins that slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is dry, savory and quite gently grippy with a long aftertaste of earth and chokeberry bitterness, some ferrous notes of blood, a little bit of leathery funk, light blueberry tones, a brambly hint of blackberry and a touch of animale.

A nice, harmonious and enjoyably funky take on Northern Rhône Syrah. You can taste the vintage isn't particularly ripe, but also that the fruit isn't packing as much stuffing as one could expect from a Syrah - both the tannins and the acidity are relatively modest and even the fruit department is a bit reticent as well. At first the wine was even more restrained - most likely due to reduction - but the wine opened up nicely with some air. However, even with air the wine didn't turn particularly expressive. While a nice, classically styled Syrah in its own right - served with a healthy side dose of funk - our wine was slightly eclipsed by the 2016 Clape Vin des Amis that was tasted at the same time. While I enjoy the funky notes and savory fruit flavors here, that 2016 Vin des Amis packed more depth, intensity and structure in comparison. I'd love to re-visit this wine from some other vintage, as I feel 2014 was a white wine vintage in Northern Rhône, meaning that it didn't produce as memorable red wines compared to the more harmonious whites. Yet still, at approx. 25-30€ this wine still was worth the price.

  • Final bottle from a half case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2015. Pristine, perfect level and cork, sandy sediment, 12% ABV. Slightly different from the previous bottle, a little more grippy and earthy, but there is such a lovely interplay with the soft red berry fruit and the white flowers and roses. Admittedly it lacks a bit of power and weight (2014 was a challenging year), but it is fresh and not hollow, and the mild tannins are perfectly judged. Length is very good, with a lovely touch of sweet peach. A very commendable effort, with a clearly recognisable "style du maison". Fully mature, time to drink up.

  • My one and only bottle. This is on farmyard notes, dirty, stinky nose. Notes of burnt soil, leather, certainly local. Tannins are present, not fully resolved. Bacon, smoked meat, tea notes as well. Incredible quality, and a very impressive wine. Wait another year or two for the tannins to fully integrate.

  • Red/black. Touch of farmyard aroma, blackcurrant, tar and smoke. Lovely flavour of blackberry, eucalyptus, apples and liquorice. Complex and delicious.

  • Fifth bottle from a half case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2015, and it is particularly lovely today. It shows a very feminine face, elegant and fragrant, with aromas of violets and roses, flavours of sweet cherries and peaches, light to medium body (12% ABV), lovely freshness and balance, a silky texture and papery tannins. The finish is light but not (too) drying and length is very good. The aromas of warm spices, red meat and black pepper remind us that we are in the Northern Rhône and not in Burgundy. Very attractive. And I think that it is interesting to note that this is now back at the 91 score which I also gave it in July 2018 - it went through a slightly surly 89-90 phase after that, from which it happily seems to have re-emerged by now.

  • Sleek and very Northern Rhone - loads of black olive, roasted meats, earth, ultra dark almost dried fruit. "Loosening up" compared to the last bottles I had. Nice.

  • Fourth bottle from a half case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2015. From two plots, one in Saint-Péray, one in Cornas, both classified as Côtes du Rhône, 100% Syrah on clay, granite and alluvial soils, aged in cement tanks, 12% ABV. Unadorned beauty. Pure and precise, an exact reflection of the "three v's" (vineyard, vintage and vigneron), ripe but dry, roses and violets, cherries and peaches, hint of earth, fresh and energetic, well balanced, but with a noticeable lack of persistence. The finish has good length but it is light and drying - there were limits to what one could do in 2014. Drink now - 2024.

  • Ripe fruit, balanced well with earthy and mineral notes. An excellent Cotes du Rhone.

  • This wine needs a bit of air but it is in a great spot right now. Typical Northern Rhone aromas but still quite ripe in this difficult year. blackberry, black pepper, charcoal, chalk dust, and smoke followed up with smooth tannins. Only the length reveals its humble descent. stunning q/p

  • Very good

  • Consistent with my previous note. It's quite a charming wine, with a lovely purity of fruit, a silky texture, ripe acidity and mild tannins, but the back palate is slightly attenuated, which also leads to a rather light finish. Completely intact on the second day, so there is no rush, but there is no reason to keep this any longer either. Drink now-2022.

  • Good and solid wine, quite juicy and ready for business. Day two still alive but lost against day 1.

  • Dry good. Baby CNDP.

  • Pure Syrah character, tight and minerally but not rustic or funky, peach and cherry, spices and liquorice, slender palate lacks stuffing, slightly thin and dry finish. Not as good as the bottle tasted in 2018. Probably best to drink up.

  • Weekly tasting group RWP #338; Some random wines (@ DJ): In the bouquet dark berries and some green impressions. On the palate a juicy wine with dark berries, some green herbs, a touch of sweetness, good acidity and tannin with a pleasant bite. Ready now and the next 2+ years.

  • Still showing more of a leaner, bretty, green olive/black olive funk, not all in a bad way, and nice cassis fruit. Just not as pleasing as other Clape CdRs from the past..

  • Overwhelming notes of barnyard, more of a body odor scent to be honest. Undrinkable. We debated whether it was VA or somehow affected otherwise, but a fail either way.

  • nose of spice. minerals, fruit, earthy. Nice wine, medium bodied. Long finish. Still tight, but great.

  • A big mineral undertone and significant tannin with a plush texture. The fruit, which there wasn't a lot of, gained a cab franc-like herbaceous quality after a few days. More serious and not all that generous in style. Nice to drink.

  • Solid showing; the nose has lovely dark fruit, smoke, and a fair amount of herbal notes; seems more green and herbal than I recall. The palate has lovely fruit and minerality with good acidity and solid depth for the level. Good, but not as good as some other vintages I've tried.

  • Coravin 7/24/18: Youthful purple color; nose is moderately aromatic, somewhat closed, plummy minerally fruit; palate is medium bodied, medium tannins, youthful, some fruit but kind of lacking in the midpalate, a nice minerality; finish is short-medium and quickly trails off. For the price I expected a lot more... this is a typical syrah-based cotes du rhone. 84
7/25: A bit of sediment (surprisingly) on this glass. Otherwise unchanged, and still not impressive. Even a hint of bitterness today which is worse.

  • Youthful purple cherry colour; impressive nose, intense and pure, excellent Syrah typicity, ripe black fruit, flowers and spice, black olive, lovely mineral depth, displays complexity and nuance; energetic and fresh palate, light to medium body (12% ABV), more flowing than concentrated, well integrated tannins, harmonious, really grounded and with nothing out of place; very good resonance and length. Marvellous stuff. I can’t really decide between 90 and 91, but I am plumping for the latter on the strength of the nose.

  • From Saint Peray 20 -70 years old and then a small amount of young vines from Cornas apparently. On day two, which is not doing it any favors. Bill says yesterday it had all kinds of bitter root and tapenade but today not so much.

  • Lots of olive some dark muted fruit and game. Very silky on the palate. Really enjoyed this. Nice medium + body 12% abv.

  • Leather, smoke, and dark fruit/herbal notes. Strikes me as having some Grenache-driven flavors, though as far as I know there isn't any here. Young and a bit harder to read on the palate. Firm. Good body for the level. Needs a few years.

  • A little simple compared with other vintages. Good but not up to the price. More a traditional cdr.

  • Monday Night Blinds (Home (Noe st)): Opaque ruby to a pink rim
Black pepper on the nose, green olive, and oak. green olive.
Bitter chocolate on the palate - 20% - slight oak?
    Elevated alcohol - 13.5% (actually 12%)
    Elevated acid
    Medium tannins.

Not ripe enough for Australian Shiraz.
    too dark for CdP
    Northern Rhone Syrah
Syrah from Northern Rhone, Hermitage. 2013.

    2014 A. Clape Cotes du Rhone (100% Syrah), 12%.
This is really good. A more powerful ripe style than Graillot.

  • Inky almost neon glowing purple hue -- "wine syrup" great descriptor below. Loaded with cassis and olive -- black and green olive. A touch too much green olive/herbal/almost vegetal notes but not in a bad way per se, in a this is too young way. But loads of blueberry syrup/cassis notes too, nice. Barely released into the market. Hang onto em a bit.

  • Deep ruby. Black olive and a touch of floral aromas. Good density but very tight and tannic with a grainy, peppery palate feel. This demands time, but I wonder whether it will always tend to be tough going. Nowhere near the magical balance of the two 2013 Clape Cornas that I recently tasted.

  • Dense and unyielding with an almost barrel sample like youth and freshness. Corked it back up. The next day it had softened a bit, revealing dark fruits, new leather, granite minerality, and a subtle white pepper note. Enjoyable now with the extended air but will no doubt need 5+ years to reach maturity.

  • Wow, this is dark and dense and concentrated, like wine syrup, but totally natural and effortless. Rolls cross the palate like unfurling silk. Rocks and black/blue berries. Really curious to see what happens here. Brilliant.
