Beautiful, I've heard turley can age but did not think this lodi zin was good almost 20 years later. Maraschino cherries, iodine, autumn leaves on the nose.
Palate is still retaining decent black cherry and blackberry fruit. Acidity is still very noticeable and finishes with tobacco and decaying leaves, which at first thought it was corked. Definitely got better as it opened up.
Great auction buy at $50.

From magnum, signed by Larry Turley. Not a hard edge left on this offering; time has beautifully sculpted this. Primary elements of plum, black cherries, black raspberries and ripe apricot are now joined by secondary elements of soft cedar, rosemary, cinders and wet pavement. A 12-year-old Zin whose time in the cellar has burnished this into a perfect accompaniment to food. Try it with grilled or poached salmon. (= Outstanding)

2004s around the world: Garnet around the edges. Very ripe fruit, fresh baked goods, and baking chocolate; cherry pit. Paper and coffee notes linger. Past peak. Still enjoyable but not for long. Drink now.

Decanted little over an hour to allow sediment separation (wasn't much) before taking it out to dinner. Still drank very nice, with some of the usual zin punch a bit more subdued allowing the peppery, dried fruit undertones to stand out. Group loved it and at $38 a great value, but would drink now if you have any left.

Drinking an old Zin is a complex experience. The fruit and vibrance have faded and been replaced by layers and layers of nuance. This wine was at its peak a couple of years ago, yet in some ways the essence of mushrooms, oak and earth coupled with the still strong cherry and strawberry fruit make this an unexpectedly good experience. The wine paired perfectly with a mushroom ragout over pasta.

Wife thought she picked up tca but I think its our lack of familiarity with the varietal. As others noted, raisin is most prominent, some stewed prunes (not a pleasant memory from the grandparents when I was a toddler). Very little of the spice I expect from a zin.

15.8% ABV. Translucent dark garnet in the glass. Spicy nose of muted clove. Fairly bright tangy red fruit with more of a raisin finish. Pretty good. Probably on the downward slope.

Plush, nice fruit, a Turley nose of blackberry and cocoa. I tend to think of the Dogtown as a bit one dimensional, but this delivered a nice midpalate and finish. Good integration, but still by no means a thinking man's wine.

15.8% alcohol. Probably drinking at its peak right now. Dark red color. Slightly port-like edge to the nose, but briary black fruit predominates. In the mouth, plush and ripe and very pleasant to drink, with jammy black fruits and spice. Back-end heat detracts. B+

Garnet red core and brick at the rim. Tight nose. Jammy with liqueur. Strange marshmallow note and then heat. Full-bodied. Volatile and aggressive on entry. Fleshes out a bit with jammy, candied fruit flavors. Tannins have a soft grip and the finish is long. This is a big, in your face wine. It's not subtle. It does not present the herbaceous flavors that I have found on other 2004 Turley zins. 50+4+12+17+4

Deep plum nose, spice and smoke. The flavors are good but maybe a bit muted. Sour cherry, white pepper, high enough acidity that it almost comes off as sour or citrus. Still good, maybe on the downside. Drink now.

Popped and poured. Followed a very soft cab, so the strength and tightness might have been amplified. But overall this wine dissappointed to say the least. Everything is disjointed and the wine showed no characteristics of Zin or Turley or Dogtown. I had two glasses and put the rst away for tonight. Hopefully there will be a change with the time opened. On Night two, the wine was opened up, but too much so. While drinkable it did not show any Turley or more specifically dogtown notes that I recall from other vintages. I reccomend an 1hour decant of this wine right now and then decide if it is your drinkiing zone.

Well balanced for Turley, nose of raspberry, oak, not much else. Nice blue berry, a bit of VA (but not obnoxious levels), moderate tannin, plenty of acid. Hot in the finish. Not nearly as big as we expect from Lodi, but better for it. Poor value at $52 direct with shipping, but very good nonetheless. Avoids Turley's two big flaws, high VA and overripeness (is that a word?). I have come to enjoy Zin's balanced side, and this has it.

Popped and poured. Medium to full-bodied wine that is dark ruby in color. On the nose, dark berries and charred wood. On the palate, black cherries, raspberries, and black pepper on a very long 30-second finish. Decent acidity, but the complexity could be a little better.

Fabulous. RMP calls this "restrained" -- I call it just about perfect. Velvety waves of raspberry, blackberry, pepper and spice. Nice balance of tannins and acids. This is what Zinfandel is all about.

Nose: Black tea with subtle cherry & spice undertones. Palate: Tea flavors with red fruits. Very subtle for a Turley and the alcohol was in check as well. Nice effort.

Loads of red fruit flavors and pepper on the nose. The palate was consistent with the nose, but there was some heat evident also. One of the deeper Zins with a red fruit profile that I have tasted.

Popped and poured -- nice raspberry nose and usual extracted, juicy flavors I associate with Turley. Not over the top, and well balanced, although mild heat is detectable. Pleasant to drink and held up well the next day.

Clear dark red color, nose of red raspberry, black cherry and kirsch, similar flavors with a touch of briar and plum added, highish acidity and low tannins in this bottle tonight. Absolutely delicious, and clearly a step above other zins. Bravo.

No formal notes on this wine as it was on a night where I split three bottles with my fiancee. We had this wine with a rack of lamb. It complimented it perfectly. In fact, we had specifically bought this wine to have this with lamb when we tasted it 4 months ago. I will try to buy two more bottles for other nights with lamb. It is a very pricey wine, but it is well worth it when you have it with an rare rack of lamb.

Continuing with the Tuesday is Turley Day theme. We had our first 04 DT. Good wine, continuing a strong tradition with this vineyard. A little bottle rest will do this wine some good but the tightness is already shedded and the wine is drinking smooth. We only decanted for about thirty minutes. Lots of the Turley Character is there, strong Zin scent on the nose, and dark rich fruit on the mouth heavy alcohol on the finish. This wine was not hot to me at all (which I find young Turleys to be sometimes) and we enjoyed it with our Tacos. If you have a couple go ahead and pop one now. If you have only one wait a little longer and you may get a very silky wine when everything finally comes together on this.

A bit restrained for what I expect from a Turley. Dark ruby color - big nose of plums and dark fruit. Silky mouthfeel - FANTASTIC!! Tast a bit muted for a Turley ... still fruit-forward and hedonistic. Medium finish. I would give this at least another 12 months to mature. Decanted 60 minutes - paired with grilled porterhouse.

Stewed plum and raspberries on the nose and bright acidity on the palate; this is a medium bodied wine in the Turely style (high alcohol). As with many Turleys, this would be a tough match with anything but robust food, but this has an integration that is better than others I have tried. Lively and fruit forward, this will probably not disappoint, as the acids and tannis are fairly well balanced. Decent effort, if a tad hot. Gorgeous color.
