I let breathe for 2.5 hours and decanted. The wine was a dark ruby color, medium legs. The tannins were smoothed out, the wine was well balanced, a little tired on the end.

Far far better than the first of my two bottles. Beautiful color with that characteristic tawny tinge. JWG's last notes have it pretty spot on. Alot of very dark cherry, cedar oil, rose petal, menthol nose, tobacco and leather.

A little less spectacular than the recent bottles, but still an extremely satisfying drink. The nose is full of dark nebbiolo fruit, tarriness and a floral note. Palate has gotten deeper with dark cherries, leather and earth. Moderate tannic notes at the end.

No detailed notes. Seemed a little tight, but maybe I should have decanted sooner than 2 hours; it could have been a dumb phase. Enjoyable to drink, with plenty of that tarry rose you would expect from aged Barolo, just felt old/tired.

Decanted and drank over 6 hours. Nose of menthol, pine sap, a little rose wood, and sour strawberry. Palate of dark, sweet wood (without the wood being obtrusive), slightly underripe strawberry, a little wood spice. A longish finish with some grip and wood notes, that gets progressively sweeter as wine opens up in the glass. The last sip had a (nice) note cherry cough syrup with subtle bitter finish. Overall this wine has benefited from time, to resolve and hide the prevalent wood. Ultimately, still too much wood for my taste, so a 92. But the balance, rounded tannins, present fruit can argue 93. My point scoring system needs an updating/tweaking... on old scale this would be on a 93, but on where I think my scale is going, this is a 92.

Another outstanding bottle from this vintage. Similar to the one I had about 18 months ago. Nose is big with very dark fruit and minerality and leather and floral notes. Palate is sharp, intense with super dark cherries, bright acidity, some spice, some leather. Good tannins at the end that linger on and on.

Purple color with brown in the rim. Mildly fruity bouquet and flavor, possibly plums. Not unpleasant but without significant nuance or depth. Most tasters rated this wine quite highly, but what they smelled and tasted was greatly different, so take it all with a grain of salt. I have not been enamored with Barolos, which I put in the heartbreak wine category: very hyped, inconveniently long cellar time, and quite expensive. Even so, "Delenda non est disputandem."

PNP over 4 hours. First bottle from a case. Agree that this is drinking very well now, but will only get more interesting as it ages a bit more. Very enjoyable juice and certainly a great QPR. A bit of lightening and browning at the edge, but overall a classic deep dark brownish cherry color. Nose has a bit of rose, dark fruit and cedar. Nice fine grained, silky, soft tannins with a bit of acidity to keep it fresh and engaging. Palate is classic, old school Barolo. Tasting the rose petal, dried orange peel, dusty dark cherry. Really unwinds to show it's fruit and complexity after 3-4 hours. Medium weight with great balance. Suggest trying one if you've got more than one and watching it evolve. Drink window is probably 5-7 years and maybe longer for those that appreciate older vino.

Drinking well. This bottle had more of an oak note to it than I remember from the previous bottle (91). We drank the first half the first night and the second half tonight. The second half was poured in a screwcap 375 and essentially slow O'd for 24 hours. Wow! What a change. Now the oak is gone, the sappy red fruits come to the fore, everything is in balance with lovely acids and tannins all in harmony. Very long finish. Upping my score to 93. I have 3 of these left. It will be interesting to see how they evolve over time.

A remarkable barolo. Nose is big big big with very dark fruit and minerality and some leather and floral notes. Palate is sharp, intense with super dark cheries, bright acidity, some spice, some leather. A good hit of tannic drying at the end that just lingers on and on. This wine is good for a lot more years, I guess.

Cherry, leather, tar and floral notes on the nose. Has a bit of that burned tar funk, but as other reviewers noted, that blew off. Since I last tried this wine (March 2014) it has smoothed out and integrated noticeably. Still very close to full bodied and took several hours to fully open up and was still going strong 8 hours in. Cherry upfront, backed with strawberry and raspberry and then more tart, red fruit notes on the finish. Finish has excellent tannin and acidity based structure which is mouth-puckering enough just to be enjoyable and balance the fruit, without taking away anything from the wine. I loved the mid-palate fruit and the balance with the tart notes towards the finish and the acidity and tannins there. While I think this wine is at peak, as other reviewers have noted, it should remain at this level for several more years. For a vintage that has been subject to a lot of downgrades in recent years, this is one wine that comes close to living up to the hype.

Barolo from Traditional Producers (Portland, OR): This wine delivers aromas with killer depth. Blueberry, plum, nutmeg, and violet aromas spin in the glass, bringing me back for more. Great blueberry pie shows on the palate, with the crust intact. With the crust flavors, a bit of the age of this wine is evident. Full acidity comes into play towards the finish, while good blueberry flavors persist, eventually adding depth. Even tannins appear, staying in stride with the other elements of the wine. This is thoroughly enjoyable. 92+

The goal: Traditionally produced profound Barolo in classic vintages (My House (Portland, OR)): This wine offered very nice, pleasant, balanced aromas, including some tart earthiness and soft puckering fruit. Really rich and soft on the palate, and actually quite pure and elegant. Puckering and tart acid are throughout, but it's very smooth and integrated with the fruit. Puckering on the finish as well and showing off more of that elegant fruit. Tart rich acid here too, and the finish is a bit more lean than the other wines thus far. I'd say this is the first wine of the lineup that's actually ready to drink today. In fact, the next day the wine had died.

As others have noted, I was initially shocked by how mature this wine looked, smelled, and tasted when first poured. I would by no means call this an old wine, but figured I would apply the rule of always decanting old barolo. Once again, a stunning transformation. After an hour or two in the decanter, this put on weight and color while the fruit emerged from the tired notes. A nice, classic wine.

Cherry and leather on the nose. Nearly full bodied, but beautifully balanced and wonderfully integrated. Bright cherry and raspberry fruit up front with strawberry in the back, finishing with classic tobacco and leather. The balance and integration suggested a wine near peak, but the brightness of the fruit and the structure on the finish tell me this might get even better. So smooth through the middle and an excellent finish. This was just plain outstanding.

very fine indeed, nose was sweet with some perfume, color is pretty darn dark for 13 year old barolo, palate was big to match... red fruited with some subtle tannins to give it edge and great acid to balance out the big fruit and the remaining oak, feels like this will peak if 2-4 years but not sure how long it will last thereafter

The son & I debated the score; he sticks with 94 and I waffled a little at first, but came solidly on 93. This wine has beautiful anise and licorise nose and a richness that reminds one of liquor more than wine. And yet, the palate has big, bold fruit that is clean and crisp. The mid-palate crescendoed with layers of chocolate and fruit and the finish was long. My 93 vs. 94 debate came down to the length of the finish and a few notes that were not as harmonious as I would insist upon to go with the higher score. Notwithstanding this is a beautiful wine and I wish I had more.

Beautifully perfumed on the nose with violets. Medium ruby with slight sligns of bricking around the rim. Smooth and balanced. Only slight tannins evident on the finish and limited complexity suggesting that this is not one to hold for the long term. Wine Spectator (James Suckling) gave this 96 points (most likely based on early drinking pleasure) but this publication overated the 2000 Barolo vintage (in contrast to Tanzer, Gambero Rosso & Parker).
