After having a disappointing '99 of this, I thought I should check on the 2000. Popped and poured. Really wonderful. Big and hedonistic. Ripe and viscous. Pushes the ripeness boundary but stays safely in balance. No heat. The fruit is still fresh. Drinking great now.

($30) 15% alcohol. A blend of Mourvedre, Valdepenas, Alicante Bouschet…maybe one or two other grapes. Possesses an alluring, piercing nose of clove, eucalyptus, and allspice over blackberry liqueur. Sweet on the attack with lush black fruits and more baking spices. No sense of excess alcohol. Nice length and supporting acidity that lends the wine a slightly tangy, but very pleasant finish. Like this.

Wine Country August 2001: Barrel Sample - From vines planted in 1910 in a two acre vineyard off Olivet Lane in Dry Creek. Has a little bit of everything. Sort of a field blend but each grape was harvested independently. 75% Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet, Mondeuse, Tempranillo, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Interesting wine. Quite dense and tannic, but the underlying fruit suggests it may come off quite well. Mona was quite taken and we did ultimately track down two bottles of the 1999 Two Acres to satisfy her craving.

Tasty but somewhat one dimentional which somewhat expected due to the 2000 vintage. Drink remaining bottles over the next year.

This wine needs at least 3 more years, maybe more, before it should even be tasted again.
