  • Garnet; reduction quickly blows off, cherries & other red fruit, later classic green leaf; supple, tannins tamed, refreshing acidity, med-full bodied; finishes with aplomb. Very long. At peak.

  • Just after a 2014 Croix Boissée: also mainly cherries, same aromatics, but more on the fruit, less structured, needs some time to get rid of its baby fat. I preferred the 2014 tonight.

  • Excellent
Just getting around to the first of three bottles purchased nearly six years ago. Worth the wait. Opened the bottle a few hours before pouring, but did not decant. It was nice out of the gates. I poured side by side with a 2013 Olga Raffault Les Picasses and gravitated strongly to the Baudry. I set aside most of the Raffault to try another night.

Initial nose: That's Chinon! Not much brett to me. Turned moist soil. A hint of petrichor. Some mushroom. Dark and red fruits, but what???

Darker fruits than the Raffault. Nose follows through. An unfortunate bit of fading in the middle and end, so the finish is modest, but it did start to fill in with air.

Old school, classy. A really nice pairing with a hanger steak with a mushroom cream sauce made with veal demi-glace.

    Next one in 2028?

The cork was in excellent condition, null seepage.

  • Oh my, this is a terrific wine that is marred by a terrific amount of brett. Yes, a riper year and has the ripe, rounded fruit to show for it, but in no way over the top. Medium bodied, pulsing with a thrum of bright, crunchy, and chalky red fruit (strawberry-raspberry), ripe red pepper, pipe tobacco, stony minerals, and a very long, silky sour-and-salty cherry finish. And of course, band aid on the nose, clove spice and barnyard on the palate. 91 for me (med-high tolerance for brett), probably 76 if you have a low tolerance for brett, and 94 if you have an ultra high tolerance for brett.

  • Popped and poured and enjoyed over two days. The wine was stored in woozy bottles in the fridge in woozy bottles and held well for day two. The nose reeks of herbs and cedar. The palate is classy with notes of bell pepper and light hints of berries. This wine is in early maturity and drinking well. Open for business too.

  • Young; significantly better on second day. Still 5-10 years to be fully ready.

  • Given a 2 hour decant and this was open for business. Lots of tart red cherry with some herbal, earthy and bell pepper notes. Excellent focus and drive across the palate with a good amount of powdery tannins. You can almost sense the limestone. While drinking nicely now, this will be even better in 5 years. Definitely not too ripe for my tastes. Just lovely.

  • Give it an hour of air and dang this is ready to roll, as the initial barnyard funk blows off (still present, but in balance). Green stemmy nose with clear cab franc character, mineral earth cellar floor but fruit is yet to come. Lighter body than expected, lots of tingling back and forth, leans slightly tart cherry, mercurial (as in shifting, not as in tasting like mercury!). May be bottle variation given some of the prior notes, but this one is beautiful and sharply elegant.

  • After a corked bottle two weeks ago, this one is super clean: blackberries, cassis and some red fruit. A Croix Boissée from a light year, elegant and well accessible.

  • Slightly corked

  • Good but a little too ripe for what I was looking for. 2015…

  • Good depth and weight here, still young. Not as elegant or structured as other vintages. Perhaps needs some more time to develop

  • Given a 3 hours decant to remove the Baudry bretty notes. Red and black fruits and some cedar with lactic creaminess. Medium finish with resolved tannins

  • Baudry and cab franc continue to be a personal favorite. Fantastic balance. Approachable, funky, shows a great deal of finesse. Both red and dark fruits on the nose, with just the right amount of green coming through. Pretty tight at first but opened up a lot with some air. Palate is more of the same, with a little more green coming through. Medium acidity and medium+tannins.

  • This one had a lot going on, popped and poured over about 3 hours, a bit funky on the nose, herbs, cedar, with some bramble coming out at the end. Flavors were herbal, a bit woody, red bell pepper, red cherry, black cherry, mildly to moderately tannic, low acid, nice mouthfeel with a moderately long finish. Assuming this is a natural wine, unlike most others I’ve had it didn’t have any yeast notes and did have a good amount of fruit underneath the funk. Couldn’t tell if the herbal notes were Brett, also couldn’t tell if some of the woody notes were from oak but assuming that this did have some Brett, and assuming woody/cedar notes will dissipate over time. Overall I really enjoyed this snd it paired well with prime rib, very nice.

  • Mix of red and black fruit, blackberries, cassis, soil and the refreshing typical salinity of the terroir. Not the most concentrated year, drinking well with years ahead.

  • Clay over limestone; 2 years in oak. Unfiltered. So far the most “terroir” and minerality, especially on the nose. Dark berry fruit. The palate is elegant and fresh but also with plenty of tannic structure. One of my favorites of the night although it could be a bit funky for some. It should age well. They make around 750 cases.

  • Mix of black and dark red fruit. Black cherries, blackberries and cassis. This wine opened and amplified since the last year: there is an exuberant fruit above the salinity proper to the terroir, good density and length. Drinking very well tonight even without decant.

  • Still quite primary but there is a lot going on in this wine. Patience will be rewarded.

  • Came fully together into smooth elegance after four or five hours of air

  • Ruby; reduction which blew off (band aids) warm leather & brambly fruit; some tannins, stalky, red fruits, mid weight. Best left alone for a while.

  • Decanted 6 hrs. Started off a bit funky and with a slightly fecal scent, but after about 2 hrs. this rounded into form. In fact, this smelled more to my ideal of Bordeaux than most young Bordeaux I have had lately, with its great mix of tobacco leaves, earth and a touch of flowery dark fruit. As to the rest, I found this primary but quite accessible and drinking well. Primarily in the red fruit spectrum, but would occasionally produce a well defined cherry note. This worked really well off the leafy and gravely traits, and avoided any greenness, or very little. Very fresh, this closes with confidence and I am thrilled to see where this will be in 10 Years +.

  • This is surprisingly accessible. It’s moved beyond being a youthful primary wine, and it’s still far from its full potential. Chewy and slightly tannic. This goes away with a little food and doesn’t really detract from the enjoyment. Cab Franc bass notes. Dark, brambly and dense. Reminds me of young Bordeaux more than Chinon.

One of those rare bottles where I regret not buying a lot more.

  • Great day 1. Better day 2

  • I decided to take this for an early test drive because why the hell not? Really intense and densely packed. Doesn't show any blowsyness from the warm vintage but does show a lot of structure and intensity. There was enough fruit hanging off the structure to fill out a juicy mid-palate while that driving Croix-Boissée chalkiness and tannin drive over the palate like a freight train. Started to clench up after an hour and a half or so. Tried the remains of the bottle over several days and it never really opened back up. Hands off for 4-5 years. Will be another excellent vintage of this wine.

  • Black cherries, plums, some meaty notes, salinity, excellent Croix Boissée which has put on weight, drinking very well, but can go on for long years.

  • First tasted the wine this and wonderful winery and then bought a bottle of ‘15. Delicious but only wish I got more to bring home.

  • Dark cherries, plumb, blueberries, violets, some meaty notes, softer tannins in 2015 compared to more massive and concentrated years as 2014, 2012 or 2010, tasting La Croix boissée 2015 again confirms my opinion that this vintage is a lighter one, enjoyable now for long years, in line with 2009.

  • -- first glass poured approx. 30 min. before initial taste --
    -- tasted non-blind over a couple days --

NOSE: "dark"; brooding; cherry pit; garrigué/stony/plum/bell pepper melangé; clean; quintessential Chinon.

BODY: medium bodied; superfine particulate matter present; garnet-violet color of great depth.

TASTE: medium-grained tannins are drying; light, sweet oak; plum; bell pepper; old wood furniture and a hint of shoe polish; hint of leather; medium acidity; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; very stony; well-balanced; if this puts on weight with age this will be incredible; not heavy/thick. Continued being awesome on Day 2. Clearly speaks of Cabernet Franc. Seems this could comfortably be consumed over the next twenty years. Perhaps just a hair shy of the incredible 2010, but that's picking nits. Excellent wine!

  • Not too much experience with Chinon wines, I love where this is now and where it is going. Its earthy, with herbaceous vibes and some violets in the background. Long and dry finish tells you this is going to keep on a good path for a long time. This is totally drinkable to me now. Drink or Hold

  • Ruby; classic leafy blackcurrant, low key, striking freshness; crisp fruit, refreshing acidity, underpinned by finely attuned tannins; finishes in foursquare fashion. Best left alone for 5 years.

  • In glass for one hour. The aromas here start out incredibly strong with the bell pepper, more so than usual for the La Croix Boissée. Surprising considering the elegant year. This does begin to soften a bit and reveal more undertones with air, though. At this stage, beyond the peppers, I get very flinty rocks, under ripe cherries, and it's all smoothed out very beautifully with its beguiling structural elegance. It certainly demands some attention. Palate entry is initially soft and round, showing nice acid entering quickly, those under ripe cherries are at the fore, and more flint is noted. Really nice structural balance, and surprisingly not at all overbearing despite its youth; it can be held in the mouth for some time without becoming over powering. Sweet fruit and balanced acid initially hit the finish, and then quickly that fruit begins to fade and the green bell peppers are back. The lingering sensation is rocks, acid, and green peppers. A very well balanced wine, on the leaner side of a great year. This is certainly more classic than the 2009 rendition of this wonderful wine, but due to that classicity, I bet it will age even longer and beautifully. For today's drinking, I'd take the 2009. For 2040, I'd take this guy.

  • Had another bottle this week and drank that over two days. On the second day it actually opened up a lot, quite right Bank bordeaux nose on the nose and acidity & fruits were much brighter, tonned down the greener side of the wine. Maybe this wine just needs more time?

  • Not sure if it was this bottle issue but I don’t like this wine, very green to me on both nose and palate. Got a funky nose,it is not corked or advanced, just being a bit tricky at its current stage ?

  • This is a stunning bottle of Cabernet Franc and I'm thrilled I have a bunch in the cellar. It's still very young and primary, but there's already remarkable depth and complexity here with layers of red and dark berried fruit, savoury earthiness, tobacco leaves, and other herbal notes all coming together seamlessly on a medium weight frame. There's a fair amount of chewy tannin that appears on the back end, but even with that the texture and palate presence is very polished, and this is a wonderful wine to experience now (though it does shut down a bit with a lot of air) even though there's a great deal of potential ahead.

  • This is a nicely balanced wine with tremendous potential. Double decanted and tasted starting after an hour. Dark berries, structure, acid: it is all there. Hold for at least ten years.

  • Dark red and blue fruit, cherries and a bit of blueberries, tobacco, quite a number of tannins, but very digest ones, this wine is accessible with a lot of years ahead to reach its peak. I see it in line with 2009, which was always from its youth enjoyable. 2015 got a lot of rain just before the harvest, there is middle concentration, not comparable with 2010, 2014 and 2016, which are greater years.

  • I was very curious to try this young. Deep, clear ruby. Forward dark red fruit and a whiff of dill to announce its varietal origin. Medium weight, excellent density for Loire Cabernet Franc. Discretely ripe cassis, an herbaceous twist that enhances without seeming too green, fine acidity. The most striking thing is the long, very stony finish. This is superbly balanced and can be approached now, but it is tightly wound and meant for the future. I still have not touched my 2010 and think that this will deserve a similar amount of aging.

  • Tasted today at the domaine: quite open, a certain sweetness (technically the wine is perfectly dry), red cherries and of course the usual saltiness, comparable in the style with 2009.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Exceptional. Rich, glossy berry fruit but tons of earthy and savory flavors, green tobacco, and that chalky, fine tannin that’s a hallmark of the vineyard. Bar none the best rendition of this consistently excellent wine since the 2009. Maybe not the spine of the also-great 2010, but more immediately approachable and absolutely delicious.
