Nose: strawberry, spices, green pepper, smoke, mushroom, rose petals, cherry tomato, rice cake, orange rind Notes: started drinking after opening for one hour. This is an absolutely stunning wine from Mongerd Mugneret and its quite delicious. This is the very nice kind of Grands Echezeaux that got me to fall in love with Burgundy in the beginning of my winr journey. Although the 04 greenness is still present in the beginning but I think it has not affected the overall profile of the wine. The nose is intense and the palate is silky and smooth with a distinctive smokiness to it. This wine will have no problem holding up for the next 10-12 years. I am becoming more confident with the 2004s and I think its performing a little better than most people think for this vintage. I had the Richebourg from Mugneret not long ago and I think the Grands Echezeaux is actually on par with it. Having done all of the grand cru cuvees from Mongeard Mugneret I think it's safe to conclude that for this particular vintage the Grands probably delivers the best value. I am definitely a huge fan of the Domaine as they make some seriously good wines especially when it's aged. Drink: now - 2035 Rating: 94

Vertical tasting of 2002-2005 GE. Last out of 4. On the positive side, this wasn't overtly green like the CdL from 04. Showed very advanced on the nose, with stewed and oxidized aromas. The palate showed a little flat and tired, not much energy or lift. Very much marked by the vintage.

Impressed with how this turned out. No green flavors or aromas. Maybe we were wrong about 2004. Maybe the wines just require some time before the green flavors and aromas disappear like they did in '91. Very aromatic and perfumed with rose petals, rose hips, wild herbs, red cherry. Quite fresh and acid driven on the palate. Doesn't have the depth of fruit and flavors that we're used to from this vineyard but a fine effort considering the vintage.

Was very interested in this 2004 because of the reputation of the vintage, but fortunately, no green-meanies with this bottle. Bright red-fruited nose. On the palate, fairly light in weight, but quite flavorful and focused with a silky mouthfeel. Very enjoyable.

I think this has really shed its tightness and is drinking superb right now. Nose of cherry, oak and cinnamon more pronounced this go around. Got some strawberries and some rose petals on the palate this time with still a silky finish. Very nice.

Popped and poured a small taste as we prepared dinner. Since it was at cellar temperature the initial fruits were somewhat muted with a bit of dark cherry. As the wine warms and aerates some lively red cherry and dark clove emerge. Later there is a whiff of cinnamon and anise. I have never liked the 04s but this one is in a decent place. I am not overwhelmed by GMs although there is a strange metallic streak in the mid-palate which I suspect is my interpretation of GM. Acidity is nice with rich food. Overall it was an enjoyable bottle but not a GC ringer. Worth what I paid for it (deeply discounted)

Better than I expected, considering its youth and the vintage. Strong nose of cherry, blackberry, scant oak. Palate a little more austere, but gradually opened in the glass, showing some earth and minerals through the finish.

EWG does LQ @ SK (Starry Kitchen, Los Angeles): Served blind. Iron and stem aromas. Though the fruit seems ripe for the region it definitely came off as a Burgundy. Juicy with a lean feel. Unripe skin flavors on the finish also making me think of stems. Not a lot of concentration for aging but it drinks very nicely right now. This was the consensus group favorite on the flight.

Brought this to our favorite yakitori restaurant in WLA. Popped and poured without any decanting. The nose offered strawberries and red fruits. The color was medium cherry red with a tinge of brown along the edge. Mouthful of cherries, strawberries, rose petals & tea leaves. Not a complex wine with an attitude, but an unassuming, lovely wine that offered lots of drinking pleasure. It paired really well with grilled chicken meatballs, chicken wings & pork sausages. This wine did not have the green meanies.

Clear red with a slight tinge of brown. Slight aroma of spice and bacon. Nicely balanced but the fruit was extremely tight and not forthcoming. Short finish.

A bit tight on the nose with cherry, cinnamon and oak. The palate was full of cherry and oak with a nice smooth finish. Should evolve over the next few years.

Fine tannins with good acidity. Good but not the most impressive Grand Echezeaux I have tried.

Popped and poured. After arousing concern upon initial sips, opened gradually through dinner, progressing into tasty smoked cherries. Marvelous!

Martin Weiner Grand Cru Burgundy Tasting (DRCs, Anne Gros, Leroy) (Martin Weiner's home in Westwood, Los Angeles, California): Light medium cherry red color, slightly cloudy, with pale meniscus; some reduction, green notes on nose; tight, sous bois, mineral, tart red fruit palate showing some stem inclusion, should be lovely in 3-5 years; medium finish
