From Art's cellar. Very center of the bowl was still crimson, but then amber then orange on the rim. Wine was clear. On the nose, there were muted red fruits and nuts, just a hint of dried flowers. All the tannins were resolved and wine was silky smooth. In the mouth, the taste was that which was promised by the nose. As usual for me, wine had been decanted about 60 minutes before. Balance was good as was the medium-long finish with no astringency or bitterness.

High shoulder fill. Cork wet to top and some mold on it. Color brick w brown edges. Initially this had some mustiness that I thought was TCA. Decanted for sediment and this evolved to a green note w strong tobacco and leather. Swishing shows some acid remaining and barely noticeable tannin. Sipping gives some simple plummy fruit that is soft and pleasant. Goes a bit tart on the finish. Alone this bottle seems like this wine is past apogee. Amazing w lamb chops and a bit more air. Get some and do it. You won't be disappointed.

Appeared to be a well stored bottle with low neck fill and no signs of seepage. Color was a deep crimson, actually brightened with air. A little tired on the nose with some dried red fruit and cedar and some nuttiness in the background. Palate was smooth and plush, as the tannins had integrated. Still had some vibrant red fruit on the palate but finish faded quickly into the finish. Improved with about 2hrs air in the open bottle, then faded. Had a tired wine's vibrancy. Well preserved but tiring at 35yrs of age. Still a nice experience on my birth year (opened for my birthday).

From a bottle with some question marks around storage and condition. Medium-light auburn color. This had a metallic funk on the nose that blew off after some cursory decanting. This evolved a more classic Bordeaux nose of musty cellar and dried cherries, with a faint cocoa aroma. Similar on the palate, with a paucity of fruit and almost fully depleted tannins. With the caveat that this may have been an off bottle, I'd say that the '79 Tertre's glory days are long behind it.

Second time, still excellent and going strong. Smokey, scorched earth nose with cedar and lead pencil, a classy and captivating bouquet. The palate is bright and lighter, but the fruit and depth grow with air. Tons of steeped black tea. Not super deep nor complex, just resolved, satisfying, excellent. 92-93.

The wine is popped and then decanted for an hour prior to consumption. Possessing rather long legs, it pours a deep garnet with much bricking at the rim. On the nose, the tipple exhibits much secondary characteristics of leather, tobacco, plum blossom and mulled earth. Only faint notes of fruit remain. It has a moderately thick structure, evident of the levels of glycerin still in the wine after all these years. On the palate, the tannins are fully integrated and caress the tongue gently. Surprisingly, and quite unlike the nose, there is still a good amount of flowery fruits in the wine before some burnished leather and smoke kick in. There is a scarce bit of acidity towards the end to keep things fresh. Nevertheless, a superb effort celebrating the longevity of this wine. Finish is of medium length with some sweetness in the end to round things out.

This bottle was in astonishingly good condition- had it been a 1er Cru I would have been suspicious. Base neck fill, perfect label, cork soaked but out in one.
Perhaps as a result, this is surprisingly light on its feet- still with a little strawberry fruit, although this faded relatively quickly as the nose muted in the glass. Tons of wet earth, and a whiff of licorice. Today it also suffered a little from being served on a hot night; it was thrown off balance as it warmed. A good little reminder about the proper serving temperature for Bordeaux.
Balanced sweet and silken flavor. Perhaps missing a little grip like many of its 1979 peers, but the finish is long and tangy. Probably only 2 or 3 years from being over the hill, so I'd stick to similarly pristine examples.

Beautiful, old-school claret, still going strong. Scents and tastes of smoke, charcoal, tobacco, black tea, iron, scorced earth, more reminiscent of a Graves than a Margaux. This is light weight and elegant, and yet intense and long from high acids and tannins. The fruit remains sweet and fleshy, a good counterpoint to the structure. The color is going brown at the rim, but this is still vivacious and seems to have some time left. Right in my sweet spot.

This was a WB bottle, good fill but cork looked pretty saturated - I used an Ah So. Maybe a bit more advanced than pristine bottles, but still a solid and classic claret. Smooth cassis fruit with mature aromas of cigarbox and forest floor. My initial criticism was maybe drying out a little on finish, but I no longer found that when I revisited a while later. This bottle is certainly a drink up, but I've had others that had plenty of life left. Tasted as part of a 1979 vertical Bordeaux tasting hosted by nephew ATBridge in celebration of his birth in 1979, 30 years ago. Vegetal nose (common among the wines we tasted); cassis, strawberries, tannins on the palate; sour finish (also common). Could be the bottle was off; otherw on CT have rated this wine much higher. Overall, the best '79's were fairly enjoyable; most were just OK; some were undrinkable.

Drank on my 29th birthday with a friend. Top of cork showed quite a bit of mold, and the cork itself was fairly saturated, though still holding its integrity in the middle. Considering I just bought this bottle within the last year, I expect its storage throughout the years has been not too keen... I don't believe the wine was corked, just severely past its prime, due to advanced aging from bad storage. Decanted and began drinking after 1 hours. Nose initially was VERY musty, almost unpleasant. After the nose, the mouth feel was actually quite bright with (generic) fruit, but fairly soft. Finishes with more of the brightness, and then back to the severe funk. Left the wine in the decanter, and came back to it 4 hours later after dinner. Basically showing similarly, but a lot of the funk had gone, and it was more pleasant overall. This is drinking in the high 70 points, but as I'm questioning its storage, I'll refrain from offering a formal score. Too bad...

Opened an hour before dinner, decanted right before main course. Another good showing for this wine (for my tastes, I don't think fruit-loving friend liked as much). Nice mature midweight Margaux, floral nose with black cherry fruit, on the palate more blackcurrant with a touch of leather. Cedar & cigarbox get more intense with time, some forest floor notes, holds up well and I enjoy a glass while doing dishes 4+ hours after decanting

VHS fill, this was a tad stinky on decanting but cleaned up and filled out nicely after a short rest. I was looking forward to this one based on reports by Mark Golodetz and John Gilman, but even so found this a very pleasant surprise. Fully mature, with round cassis and black plum fruit, some cedar and tobacco, a little graphite. Holds steady throughout dinner, though it had faded by the time I had the last half-glass while doing dishes. Easily WOTN for me

Tasting 12 Chardonnays, 7 Bordeaux, 8 Cabernets including 5 Opus One (Walnut Creek, Ca.): 1979 Bordeaux 7 reds. A surprising wine with a hint of meat, veggies, and rich fruit on the nose, rich but slightly overripe fruit in the mouth, lots of medium tannins and flavors on the long finish with enough acid and fruit to suggest it will peak in 2 years. First place. Group #3.
