Red fruit, crushed herbs and heat on the nose. The palate has more stewed fruit with raisins, raspberry jam, crushed herbs, a hit of smoked meat and oak spice. Hot - can really taste the alcohol on the finish. The nose is better than the palate.

Almost as dull as the Reserve bottling from the get go, but then this became slightly more interesting. It’s still a modern take on Chateauneuf, but there is more matter here, compared to the reserve, more density. The fruit is towards the brown end of the spectrum with notes of dates and figs, there’s spices too and then, again, a note of licorice that really bothers me. Ultimately it’s a big mistake to have bought both this and the reserve. Happy I stopped buying from here after the 2004 vintage. Give me a glass of Charvin please.

Ruby with slight bricking. Aromas of candied red/black fruits, strong note of forest-floor, asian spice and smoky herbs. Medium bodied showing silky and sweet reddish black fruit compote, medium (-) acidity, resolved tannins, earthy notes and a long perfumed finish. This is a much better showing than the previous bottle.

Burnt red color. Nose has slightly overripe cherry and noticeable etoh. Palate was a mess of stewed red fruit, tar, thinning tannins, trace acid and heat. Tried over the entire evening to like this wine, but ended up pouring out.

Brick red in color. Secondary aromas are front and center with game, leather, roasted herbs, red berries, graphite and hint of forest floor on the nose. Medium bodied palate shows fading red fruits, brown spices, a savory/bloody broth like element, medium acidity, ripe tannins still present and a medium earthy finish. Drink up.

Medium deep garnet color showing its age. Glorious nose - complex and sedate without the overwhelming aromatic power of some other CdPs. Raspberry, cream and notes of leather. Herbs - thyme and rosemary. A brief appearance of Cardamam. Pine needles and pepper. On the palate, good tannins in balance with some pleasant acidic zing. Brambly black and red fruits, cherries, and pepper. Alcoholic heat (15%) into an impressive long finish. Super Chateauneuf du Pape.

Lovely wine that exceeded expectations. The nose was not so prominent, more of a sultry murmur of some beef (something between tartare and beef broth, but not bloody), red fruit and herbs. Velvet consistency on the attack, mid-palate and finish, with plenty of energy and not at all ponderous. The 15% ABV was nicely checked by good acidity and smooth tannins (but reflected in the medium-full body and just a hint of warmth on the final notes of the finish). I think this wine is at peak now but will still drink well through its 20th birthday.

My first time with this wine, iirc, and it was a pleasant experience. Served double-blind, I was on the fence between S. Rhone and Burgundy. Mature, and rather classy, this confidently offered up plenty of understated red, brambly fruits and spice perfumes. Well-balanced, medium>medium-full body, with very good acids. I found the finish to be average; the nose was more interesting than the palate - at least this bottle, anyway. I'd be drinking this one in the next 5 years if I had any. The more (mature) 2001s I have, the more I'm a believer. The 15,0% abv is fully integrated. recommended

A wonderful & classic example of why I love Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Decanted without aeration. First glass closed & a bit funky. 1/2 hr later she started singing with lots of complexity & depth. Black brambly fruits, stewed spicy herbs, llonggg meaty finish. Plenty of life left so we'll look forward to one a year scheduled from here.

Not near ready yet.. At least 2-4 more years until maturation. But with that said.. Extremely soft - almost liquid silk! Very ripe blackberries, very well hidden pepper notes as well. Nothing near the usual spice-bombs Sabon can produce! Fantastic wine but still not completely matured. Maybe decant it for 2 hours or more before serving.

Dark crimson color turning transparent at the rim with a floral nose of lilac and violets; dark berries and handbag leather. The palate is full-bodied; silky in texture; and lifted by high octane (15%). Flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, plum, and fig are subdued by notes of leather, meat, black tea, and smoked cedar given the age. This wine is very seductive at this point, and will pair well with gamey dishes. Finishes long and smooth with finely-grained, sweet tannins with a hint of menthol. Drink now until 2026. 94+

Last had one of these in 2009 and what a difference. I wish I had waited until now on all previous bottles. This has mellowed and opened beautifully. Rich dark fruit, cedar, garrigue, with a bit of spice, follow a heady nose. Big and bold but easy to drink.
D20min. Garnet red, yellow rim, 5. Spicy garrigue, polished. Well made complex, juicy, still some tannins, long finish. Drink now onwards. This was showing the same style as the Sabon Reserve but having a more of everything.

All the uncertainty involving the 2001 Roger Sabon Prestige can now be forgotten; this châteauneuf has reached its peak beautifully and it's drinking smoothly now. It's coloration is opaque, palate is harmonic and the sensation of plenitude overcomes us. Pure, intense and nicely polished. Presents notes of cherry, wild flowers, espresso, vanilla, minty herbs, spicy herbs and caramel. Fresh tropical fruit, bananas, all very integrated and fortified with the robustness of aged leather and smoked hunt meat. Delicate touch of sweet tannin leading to a long, intense, yet unlikely subtle finish. 95

Hhhmm, the cork was a bit problematic, leaking a bit so not sure if this would be a characteristic TN of the wine. If felt a touch too sweet, a touch unbalanced, not bad but not sure.

The dark brick color of this wine shows its age. The nose is medium in intensity as it is in the mouth, but shows signs of what this wine was. Still drinking quit nicely. After being opened a couple of hours, the mouth began to fade slightly. Beautiful Rhone flavors, but enjoy them now before they dissapear. EG WineArchitect, #rogersabon

While I'm not giving this as high a score as I did a couple of years ago, it has more to do with the company it was in than anything else. Opened as an afterthought after 11 fantastic CNdPs, the wine still showed extremely well. Lots of dark fruits, caocao, licorice, and tobacco box. Powerful nose, silky mouthfeel, long finish. Still a wonderful wine and drinking in its prime.

Decanted. Stunning and appealling nose and texture; gently potent with blueberry cocoapowder and notes of smoked meat, wet dirt, and roasted sage. Powder-ground peppercorns and carmel-raspberry-mint. Mild with garrigue but thrilling to the balanced and bitter, endless finish. Not as mature as the prior bottle.

Super dark and concentrated, this wine tastes like something from Paso Robles or maybe a Sonoma Zinfandel with some Petite Sirah added to the mix. Quite young for an 11 year old wine and I'm certainly enjoying it but there is a noticeable lack of restraint and minerality which I usually get in a top flight CNDP. Maybe a bit more age?... Who knows.

Popped and poured. Dark garnet in color and tending towards translucent. A bit lighter at the rim. Nose is a bit reticent but shows some dark cherry, beef blood and some pleasant herbal notes. Round and supple on the palate with glycerine, cherry liqueur, tobacco, herbs de Provence, and white pepper. 30-40 second finish with hints of rare meat, toasted herbs, and some chocolate notes.
A bit less evolved than a couple of bottles tasted in the previous year. Very nice but lacking a bit of complexity that would warrant a higher score. Drink now to 2015-16.

Full & rich, licorice, kirsch, garrigue, sweet cherry pie, and some creamy oak, maybe a bit too much oak for CdP. A little bitter on the finish. Enjoyable nonetheless, went well with roast duck. I like the 2000 better.

Tried this wine again to see if there was any development. Fairly pale in the glass. Nose doesn't give much away, again it reminds me mostly of kirsch, maybe some hints of vanilla and faint floral traces. On the palate there is some development since I tried it last, plummy fruit, very leathery, tobacco, garrigue herbs (lavender, thyme), full of flavour.....but the 15% alcohol burns my throat. I leave half the bottle. I don't buy premium bottlings of CdP any more and this is why - the extraction is too much, the alcohol is too much, the wine is not refreshing. Not my style at all.

A nice meniscus about 1.5 mm of clear ring with lots of glycerin, which seems appropriate for the age yet once tasted you get a more primary impression. Rich blackberry and small blue fruit /plumband herbs de Provance /garigue greets the entry point. Rich mouth coating extraction which seems young still. Good rich finish with some Coco and nice mineral tinge. I will give this another 3-5 years as i think it has the stuffing to improve.

Significant maturing over the last three years; possibly an advanced bottle. The nose softened over a few hours eventually offering a dessert of BBQ beef brisket, a planter of succulents in wet dirt; roasted sage and white pepper; and salty vanilla with wintergreen. The mouth remains densely woven, thick, and crimson with sweet oak, fresh dark sour cherries, and slightly bitter tannins. The deep fruit is still there, and juicy, and the long tail clothes the tongue with muting smoke and summer leaves. This wine got younger as it breathed.

Seems fully mature now. Some funk in the trunk on the nose, along with raspberry and a distinctive garden weed character. The fruit stayed fairly evasive in the early going, really only fleshing out by the fifth hour or so that this was open. Soft, fleshy mouthfeel with the trunk's funk carrying through to the mid-palate. This lost its verve on the second night. 90 now with a (-?) for later.

dinner with the goldbergers, and provided by them. thanks! decanted and drunk over 3 hours. great aromatics of red raspberry and flowers, tinged with vanilla by the oak which was moderate. on the palate it displayed medium weight, but the oak was more prevalent. not super complex, and i wouldn't be inclined to age this past 2016. it will need it's primary fruit to hold your interest.

Had 2 bottles, both from the same case and decanted for 35minutes. The wine is very powerfull, strong. Nice nose with lots of fruit and staring to fully round up on the palate. Unfortunately, and unless you like very powerfull wines, the possibility of any complexity in this wine is drowned out by this power. Still the wine is pure, not overextracted, not over oaked. A bit one dimensional though at this stage but a very good wine nonetheless and good value for money ( 30£ all in). Glad we have more and looking forward to seeing it mellow out a bit in the future. 90+ at the moment.

Good quality cork, colour ruby red. Not decanted. 15% alcohol on the label....
Day 1: Nose of kirsch, quite spirity. Cherries, tapenade, leather on the palate. Flavoury but leaves a distinct burn in the throat. Fruit a little dull. Overcooked?
Day 2: About the same as day 1.
Can't say I approved of this wine, the alcohol is too high and it doesn't sing for me. Not my style.

A really nice wine just getting into its prime. this can only continue to get better with aging. Only had one bottle, wish I had more! On opening, huge nose of funk, barnyard which blew off in a few minutes. Decanted 2 hours. Beautiful nose with cherries, violets, game and forest floor. Mouth filling tannins, well structure and balanced. A delight to drink. Deep flavors of dark berries, cherries, mushrooms, earth.

Beautiful clear dark garnet color. An exspressive nose of sour cherries "Regal Royal Crown Candy" and garrigue on the nose. Intense flavors of sour cherry and herbs with a slight kick of alcahol on the long finish. A full bodied wine that packs a solid punch of flavor. Should get better and better with time which will increase the terroir nose and flavors.

This wine has always disappointed me.Tasted 4 times now. A note in October 2005 (in a part blind tasting): "Quite closed on the nose. Mushroom and red fruits. Crisp acidity, a little sour. Quite angular tannins with red fruit submerged. This is very disjointed. Going through a bad period?" October 2008: "An odd nose of stewed red fruits and something a little medicinal. On the palate there is a mix of over-ripe red fruit with a hot finish; quite simple with a lack of depth and balance. The tannins have softened, so this is ready now, but will last for a number of years yet. This is a disappointment for a wine from the glorious 2001 vintage."

Disappointed. Not that this was bad - I was expecting the same richness and depth that this and other '01 CdP's have shown. This was decanted for several hours then funneled back into the bottle for the trip to the restaurant. Balance was fine, just not much fruit or complexity. Only other bottle consumed from this case I rated 91. Oh, well, part of the mystique.

The '01 prestige has a presence that gives the impression of crawling into a thick comforter on a firm, padded, king-sized mattress. But it's as if the bedding were a solid, dusty red with no pattern whatsoever--it's just hard to get to know this wine through its vague blend of smoke, oil, and spice. All the same, it was heaven with ribeye.

15th Annual Lyon 10 Year Retrospective (Chez Lyon in Eugene, OR): One of the darker wines in the tasting, this has black fruit, spice/garrigue, kelp, wet underbrush, and a little sangre de toro on the nose and palate. Lingers nicely. 93 pts on day 2.

This bottle was not nearly as good as a bottle I consumed in 2007. Deep purple-red color. Aromas of white pepper, blueberries and violets. Ripe fruit in the mouth with very good structure and length. Not as deep or thick as the 2007 bottle.

Palate: Plump dark plums with some leather mixed with coffee. A very nice finish that really lifts this wine!

Going through a bad period?"
October 2008: "An odd nose of stewed red fruits and something a little medicinal.
