Wine was showing no fruit and lots of wood. Disappointing showing. Drank next to '13 Monfortino, '13 Bartolo, and '13 Giacosa Falletto Vigna Le Rocche. Distant 4th in lineup.

The ‘13 Ravera is an incredible Barolo in the making, needing only a lot of time to become fully expressive. Today, it is an intense wine that impresses for its complex aromatics, density, and structure.
The nose was initially quite open and showed beautifully complex aromatics, although I found the wine to shut down later in the evening. When it was wide open, I found dark red and black berry fruit, blood orange, chalk, lavender, exotic dark florals, and a touch of sweet spice.
On the palate, the Ravera is concentrated and intense with brilliant acids and high tannin, but the sheer density of the wine and the very refined texture of the tannins make it drinkable today. I found the wine less complex and more clenched on the palate than the nose. I found chalky red and black berry fruit, lavender, and sweet spices, with some blood orange tones and minerality joining towards the finish with a burst of acidity, sweetness, and minerality lingering.

A ton of berries, fruit, cherries, cloves, and tar on the super intense nose. On the palate, the tannins are currently almost overpowering and smack you in the face. There is good acidity and some fruit hidden there, but right now it’s hard to get past the tannins. Long finish. This is incredibly hard to read. The nose is phenomenal, the palate needs decades to integrate, hopefully the fruit will remain. I don’t think this wine is accessible at the moment. I would not open another bottle for 10+ years. 94-98+

Decanted for 5 hours but in reality needs 20 years. Mouth coating tannins are at every corner drying your gums and sticking to your teeth. What does poke through the tannin is good but slightly muted/subdued. Dried cherries, damp earth, black truffles, iron, and bitter dark chocolate. Fortunately the nose does pop with a mix of aged leather, roses, truffle, and menthol. This has potential to improve but really just needs time and absolutely requires food.

Deep and dark. Rich but with great balance. Dark cherries, roses, tar and all with a sense of richness, but still holding it together. A towering wine that for me is more impressive than lovable. I don't mean that to belittle this terrific wine. It is great, but at this point a little too much of a good thing. I can see people going ballistic over this wine, still outstanding and then some. 94

2013 Barolo: Sublime Finesse & Elegance Tasting, La Festa del Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Sweet cherry vanilla nose. Sweet black fruit up front, with a wave of tannin in the middle, followed by more delicious black fruit on the long finish Expansive in the back of the mouth. Very similar to the Cogno Pernice but with just a bit more depth at this stage. Both terrific wines.

La Festa del Barolo Master Class Tasting (Del Posto): The nose was layered and surprisingly elegant with spiced rich blackberry, minerals, dried orange, black earth and a hint of exotic spice, yet it was incredibly lifted and pretty. On the palate, I found silky textures with contrasting tart blackberry, black cherry, savory spice, minerals and mounting tannin The finish was long, cheek-puckeringly tense and structured with deeply saturating minerality and tannin, along with hints of dried citrus and dried blackberry. Wow.

This is shutting down a bit now (compared with 6 months ago). 96-97pts, with lots of upside if it evolves positively. No point opening any more bottles for another 5yrs.

2/3 of Ravera goes into the Castiglione, and only 1/3 into this single vineyard Ravera - which is the only Vietti wine made in large casks (since 2010). Much deeper and richer than the Brunate with powerful and complex tanins, and the harvest is 2wks later than Brunate. Love the richness and potential but at the moment the Rocche has much better aromatics. Drink from 2030. 96-98pts

Vietti Dinner with Luca Currado (Ai Fiori Restaurant in the Langham Place Hotel, NYC): [Per Luca's request, this received 2 hours of slow o shortly before the dinner. No decant.] Stunning perfume. Rich, powerful, ethereal. Just an incredible young wine. Hard to choose between this and the 2013 Rocche. This one has a bit more perfume, that one has a bit more structure. Both are potentially 100 point wines.

The nose showed dusty spices and minerals up front with a mix of red and black fruits, dark violet floral tones and crushed stone. On the palate, I found a dark, viral expression of Nebbiolo with intense minerality matched by firm tannin as black fruits saturated the senses along with hints of lavender and spiced citrus. It finished long and structured on a complex mix currant, plum, exotic spice and dried orange.

Immediately expressive with all sorts of floral infused red fruits. It is bright and punchy yet deep and layered. There's incredible power but it is not heavy in the slightest. It is ethereal, engaging and complex and has incredible density and extract. Length is phenomenal.

Day 1 in Piedmont (Vietti, Prunotto, & Bartolo Mascarello) (Piedmont, Italy): My notes read, "this is a goldilocks wine - blending the structure of the Rocche with the approach-ability of the Lazzarito". It also combined red and dark fruit very nicely along with a concentrated floral bouquet. My wine of the tasting.

In the upper echelons of wine; classically built, robust, piercing. A finish that haunts. You need this; will live for decades, and decades. Very highly recommended. HOLD for a decade.
The nose is incredibly deep, rooted in minerals, earth and spice, with dark floral tones, black cherry, plum, blackberry and mint. With time it opened even more to to reveal ethereal florals and herbs. On the palate, I found elegant, velvety textures, with sweet tannins and brisk mineral-laced acidity, giving way to dark fruits, minerals, plum, dried citrus, and hints of lavender. The finish was incredibly long with saturating dark fruits, yet youthfully tannic and closed in on itself.
