This really demanded the better part of a 5 hour double decant to come into focus and reveal its slightly restrained aromas of ripe red fruit, dried florals, black olives and garrigue, which gave way to a rich, sappy, saturated black raspberry profile with a refreshing herbal, mineral edge that did not quit. 95+

Domaine Charvin 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape. Of course its quite young but it has an impressive nose of red and dark fruits, violets and crushed herbs in the nose. Deep purple in color. The mouth shows elegance and soft sweet tanins with an long incedible finish.

Tasted over 1.5 hrs -dark purple -restrained dark fruit -med acidity, med/med+ weight highly concentrated dense perfectly ripe dark Grenache fruit just barely starting to unfurl, med/med+ ripe tannins -this is fantastic already and just now starting to open up, brings back the magic of some of the prior vintages as this doesn’t have the over the top jamminess and heat

Still young, of course, something revealed already in the appearance: bright grenade to the rim. At first, the nose is very black pepper, then there is that deep black cherry and plum aroma that dominates. After an hour or so in the glass, fine cherry stone bitterness complements the fruit. Full bodied, silky mouthfeel, lots of fruit (dark cherries, plums, some stewed raspberries), very fine acidity and smooth tannins. Black pepper and iron complements the fruit in the long and a bit alcoholic (15%) aftertaste. This is clearly a wine for aging, but I am a bit sceptical to how aging will deal with the rather high alcohol. Still, a wonderful wine with a grilled t-bone.

Another disappointment. Rather boozy and unrefined. More depth of fruit than the CDR. What was supposed to be a really fun comparison didn't turn out that way. In general, my hit rate with Charvin hasn't been great in the last few years. I seem to need to catch them at exactly the right time to really love them (and when I do, I do) but I don't follow them closely enough to be able to do that consistently. I don't know, 3-5 years until the next one?
Decanted forty five mnutes or so and poured with the main course- braised chicken in mole sauce. Lacks the lush raspberry fruit I have found typical of this vintage so far, thus drinks very much in a more traditional style. Currant, red berry and white pepper notes. Medium-bodied, with berry, dusty earth and garrigue flavors. Has a nice spice note in the finish. Now through 2035.

Drank this right after a 2006 Molldooker Velvet Glove - it seemed restrained by comparison. But I rather enjoyed it more.
Medium ruby color is a bit deceptive as it’s quite a big wine full body, high alcohol and long finish, not much acid but lovely velvety tannins. The flavours are starting to be dominated by the secondary and tertiary - there is some good black fruit and anise, but more vanilla, toffee and liquorice. I’d drink it soonish.

No detailed notes. This may be closing down some, although the red and black fruit still shows well; it evolves significantly over the first hour or so. I didn't notice any heat 2+ years ago, but it is noticeable now. It should probably be decanted at this stage, or hold for three to five years.

2016 CdP (and some other wines over dinner) (NY Racquet and Tennis Club): I think I was one of the few at the tasting that liked this wine. It's aged in all concrete tanks and never sees any oak. For me, that was ok. Seems to create a slightly softer style. It's unripe cranberry and tannins and maybe just a hint of alcohol although that blew off quickly so it almost felt like I imagined it. There's a softness to the wine that I appreciate. Not for drinking now, but maybe in 10 years?
Grand Vin in the making - and surprisingly approachable; cool, mineral, vertical, spicy, some sweet Grenache here (lots, actually) - and it just keep going. This will live, but it is so good, that it is not even sinful to pop one now. #Gasfabrikken#Horsens#Krimimesse2019

Note- we unfortunately had a very short time with this after lingering over the 2016 Meo Echezeaux, but it was enough to make me a fan. Also note my Rhone experience is limited, and thus my TN vocabulary is also limited for such wines.
deep red color, pure cherry on the nose at first, cloves, dark plums, on the palate very vibrant, ripe cherries, saddle leather, dark thorn tones, with time in glass plum notes developed along with a wider array of dark spices, this is in some sense what I would call a "mid-weight beauty" but yet it also has some strong sauvage notes that indicate with time this will have a certain edginess as well, firm long finish, a wonderful wine and one I can envision truly enjoying as a harmonious companion to dinner in the years to come. **(**)+, 2026+ though I think the wine can be quite enjoyable before then as it is now.

The nose was incredibly fresh and pretty, showing crushed stone with dusty, violet pastille infused blackberry, fresh black cherry, and dark, dried floral tones. On the palate, I found velvety textures, yet still so fresh and lifted by brisk acids, seeming like liquid violet florals splashing across all of the senses, showing a mix of blue and black fruits with sweet spice, minerals and hints of tannin. The finish was fresh, with just a hint of heat, displaying saturating young tannin and dark floral infused black fruits.
This is so fresh yet still structured to age. I can imagine that 2 - 3 years in the cellar will reveal an even better experience. Wow!
Day two update: This wine has not budged, still as fresh as day one and remarkably pretty. There's so much going on and it's balanced to a tee.
Pen ink and camphor on the nose. On the palate, rich red berries and black cherry, with notes of anise, iodine, and earth, with medium tannins and strong acidity. This will obviously improve, but it's good to drink now if you like young Chateauneuf. Excellent, and a very good value at a little under $60.

Insanely good, but probably not at the heights of the critics scores and lofty reviews many of these 2016s are getting. This has some herbal, minty notes underlying extremely fresh red fruits, garrigue, and spices, all in a mid-weight package with great length and excellent concentration. It outclasses the 2015, but not by much, and I suspect this has the backbone to age for another 15 years with grace. I'll reaffirm my thesis that CDP is one of the world's best wine values alongside Italian Barolo/Barbaresco.

En mode semi-aveugle, épices et réglisse au nez. Très costaud actuellement, mais est assurément voué à un bel avenir. Il est une coche en dessous de Clos des Papes pour moi au moment de la dégustation, cependant il est moitié prix!

Quite beautiful. Red fruits, boysenberry, herbs, pepper, a stony acidity and tannins. Subdued aromatics at this time. Silky palate and good length. Needs time and food to be at its best.

Une bonne coche en dessous de Clos, mais fait plus Ch9 classique, herbes de Provence, kirsh, c'était le plus costaud des trois 2016. Ce millésime est un délice si on préfère la finesse aux vins extraits.
4,5/5 (qpr top)

Decanted 6 hrs. As many others have noted, the freshnes here is the star of the show, chiseled dark cherry fruit, dusty, and just plain amazing. I loved this.

Way too hot for my taste. At 15% abv, the alcohol is intrusive.

A great example of a wine that is built to age that is also elegant and delicious when young.

Grand Vin in the making - and surprisingly approachable; cool, mineral, vertical, spicy, some sweet Grenache here (lots, actually) - and it just keep going. This will live, but it is so good, that it is not even sinful to pop one now.

Servido por copas. Dentro de ese estilo compotado, de ciruelas horneadas con especias, denso y abrumador en boca. Repetitivo y nada original. Aburrido y cansino.

Sortimentsprovning Franska Vinkomaniet (Vinkällaren Grappe, Stockholm, Sweden): Lots of red fruit, cherries, high acidity and tannic, short finish. At this point unbalanced but might improve over time.

Big hit of Grenache coupled with a nose of tar and a backend of blackberry. Good acidity and tannin to see this through the next decade. Although, this is sure easy to enjoy now.

Polished, purity of fruit, length and freshness, along with silky textures, concentration and symmetry. Classic in all the right ways, this is a knockout wine and a contender for the best vintage Charvin has produced yet! The wine was made blending 82% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 4% Counoise and 4% Vaccarese.
