  • Dark red color, showing only slight development on the rim. Intense aromas of ripe plums, ripe cherry, some iodine, like freshly drawn blood from a scraped knee, greenness of a tomato plant, tobacco and dried herbs. Full on the palate. Still dominated by ripe plums and cherry, with some dried notes of prunes. Long finish with more complexity, mainly from notes of tobacco and herbs. The tannins are developed and very fine. Likewise is the alcohol very well integrated. This wine has developed nicely.

  • pairing perfectly well with gourmet and flemish beef stew, enough potential to last 5 more years, dark garnet, ripe red fruit, firm tanins, balanced well by good acidity, inky, oak, somehow dry(ing) finish, overall a very nice find

  • Bought a 6-pack for about 26/b twelve years ago from a local independent. Decanted with somewhat light sediment for its age. Dark purple; fragrant mature black fruit nose, some oak; mature black fruits, some pencil shavings, some oak, hint of greenness (actually pleasant) suggesting early harvest. Delicious. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.

  • An amazing cellar find. Still quite fresh for the age with leather and incest accompanieng dark berries. Can be drunk with pleasure over the next few years.

  • This bottle seemed to have a much more prominent red bell pepper component than I remember in previous bottles. It was not enough to ruin the wine, but I found it prominent enough to be a distraction from the outstanding structure and balance of the wine. Still quite enjoyable and fresh, with lots of future.

  • another reminder as to why we cellar wine. The last bottles a few years ago seemed to be fading a bit. Not so with this one. It has developed great bottle bouquet, tannins a smooth counterpoint to the herbal-tinged dark fruit. lingering fnish

  • At blind tasting tonight.....everyone waas blown away by this wine and no one guessed it correctly! Has held up remarkably well in the cellar....with some life still remaining. Well balanced, very smooth tannins. Black fruit with some green notes typical of Chile. Amazing wine for the price.

  • Still big and rich, with prominent red pepper and tarragon, backed up with abundant acidity, zest, and juicy red/blue fruits. Not showing much sign of being 10 years old. Following this with great interest to see how it develops.

  • This was absolutely delicious, drinking perfectly right out of the bottle. I would call this a hypothetical blend of perfumey cab franc and ripe sweet merlot fruit, with good acidity to balance.

  • Black opaque color with a thin brick red hue. Intense aromas of black currant, sweet licorice, freshly cut tobacco leaves, tea and currant liqueur. On the palate there is a similar sweetness and liqueur drive with loads of concentration and intensity. Layers of black currant, clean and ripe, with green, vegetable notes framing it. The midpalate and finish packs licorice, tobacco and a touch of vanilla. The ripeness and power is really counterbalanced by the green vegetable notes, making the overall impression balanced and with a lot of drinkability.

  • consistent with my bottle of a few nights ago. Silky smooth, fully integrated, still some grip, but tannins are waning. 14,0% abv

  • PnP. Fading into a very graceful ending. Still a medium dark purple core, little sign of age. Aromas skew toward stewed plum, blackberry pie, baking spices, braised cabbage and tomato paste; flavors largely follow. Medium toward full-bodied with completely integrated grape tannins. Medium finish, but oh so damn smooth, silky, who really cares? All second wines should be this enjoyable. Drink sooner than later. 14,0% abv, drink thru 2014.

  • We drank this a week or so ago and I forgot to enter a note. From memory, there were dark fruits, loam and earthy notes, and a touch of bell pepper. Still had some life left. Enjoyable.

  • Occasional tasting group: Just training our blind tasting skills. (@ EvA): Dark red. A lot of sweetness and ripe fruits in the bouquet. Very good mouth feel with a lot of ripe black fruits, some chocolate, a lot of sweetness, but also a good amount of fresh acidity. Although an excellent wine I was not overwhelmed by the complexity.

  • Fresh cut red bell pepper, delivers constant spice throughout. Very nice juice with wonderful balance and intriguing unusual flavor profile. Drinking well, but seems solid enough to stay at peak for many years.

  • Our first bottle of this and believe our first bottle of Carmenere. We really like it. Pop and pour. Color is a black purple, really stunning. The nose is pepper, graphite, earth, delicate fruit, spice. The flavor is delicious with dark fruit, earth, pepper, blackberry, a little tannin. Good balance, complexity, long finish. I have three more of these and a few '06's. Look forward to following this wine over the next 10 years. We will also have to pay closser attention to this grape.

  • Still youthful, and still showing intense notes of coffee, tar, and bell pepper. Continues to showcase impressive blue and red fruits that emerge with air contact. Mouthfeel is tremendous but refined. This has great potential to improve with further cellaring, I'd say through at least 2015. I really wish I had more bottles of this.

  • Delicious! Ripe raspberries blackberries and violets on the nose, with toasted oak and just a hint of green bell pepper. Full-bodied, smooth, concentrated wine, with elements nicely integrated but hardly signs of ageing. Tastes pretty much as it smells, which is a very good thing here. Aftertaste lingers on about 30 seconds or more. Great QPR at 17 euro. Wonder how it would age, it should have at least 5 good years ahead IMO, but hard to say if it will improve, as the purity, freshness and intensity of the fruit is on of the best things about this wine.

  • One of the best Carmenere I've tasted. Ric, full bosied, smooth and creamy.

  • Dark red with both violet and garnet highlights. Distinctive, even singular, nose combines wet stinky leaves mixed in soil with more insinuating sweet red fruits. But it's the latter that takes the lead in the mouth, where the flavors proceed with utter dynamism but also remarkable harmony, with flower-like nuances. Interesting but also obviously serious; this ought to be worth at least several more years in the cellar.

  • Full open nose of currants, herbs and toasty oak. Palate has shed some of its baby fat to reveal a more lean but still rich - just not as lush and jammy as when first released - profile. Good balance. Frankly I was enamored with this wine upon release with its soaring nose and richness of fruits. Seems to be mellowing but holding it together with minimal time in bottle. Very nice but not special.

  • Very dark purple. Green bell pepper springs to the nose, along with blackberry jam and oak. Medium/full bodied, lots of dark fruit, though not terribly jammy, along with clove/chocolate notes on the decent finish. Was once not a bad QPR at all, though seems to have lost a little of the fruit luster it had when I had this a year or so ago. The green bell pepper is just too dominating. Drink up.

  • 85% Carmenere, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2,5% Petit Verdot, 0,5% Cabernet Franc. Aged in French oak barrels for 17 months (90% in new barrels, 10% in one year old barrels).
    Decanted for 1 hour.
On the nose, it unveils smells of mint, ripe cherries, tobacco, good oak and alcohol.
On the palate, it's full bodied, strong but polished tannins, medium aftertaste, pronounced astringency and a bit too alcoholic.
Let's see how it's going to perform tomorrow. Now, I'm giving 89.
2nd day - it became less expressive on the nose but slightly better on the palate with less alcohol and less astringency. However, I'm keeping the 89.

  • Great bottle. Decanted about an hour before serving. Ate with osso bucco and polenta. Earthy nose, black currants, tar and smoke. Comments were passed that this could easily be slipped into a blind Bordeaux tasting. Lush palate, fruit, acid and tannins all balanced with a smooth finish.

  • This was a delicious Carmenere - slightly green on the nose with bell pepper notesbut also sweet ripe blackberry and cherry fruit, very smooth and polished nose. Palate is fantastic with lush smooth berry and cherry fruit, notes of dark chocolate as well and well balanced with juicy acidity and smooth tannins - this is a lovely wine showing well. Note sure much more aging is really needed.

  • Full and beautifully complex nose of cassis, fresh cut herbs, bell pepper, coffee and toast. Palate is full bodied with medium-rich fruit that is seamless start to finish. Long tasty finish that is full of fruit and herbal notes. Nicely balanced and complex in a modern, tasty package.

  • Decanted two hours. Big vanilla nose with some spice. Full bodied, more vanilla with other flavors of dark berry, plum, chocolate, little cedar with some mint on the finish. Great balance of tannins and acidity. Long finish. while the structure is nice the vanilla flavors dominate otherwise I would score higher. It's worth the price, drink now.

  • This wine is a excellent deal for the money. A very dark ruby red color, full bodied and 14.0% alcohol. The wine gives off aromas of smokiness, red & dark berries, cassis, chocolate and mineral. Tasted of smokiness, dark berries, chocolate, mineral and a pomegranate finish. This one is very nice now, but a another year or two in the cellar and it will be even better. This one I can see going 10 to 15 years past the vintage date. While I rarely eat meat, I had this with BBQ ribs, and the BBQ that was used was The Waterloo BBQ sauce(you have to try this, if it is not available in your area, here is the website --> www.thewaterloo.com). The other sauce used was Fischer and Wieser's "Mango, Ginger and Habenero sauce"(1-800-369-9257). This wine paired perfectly with them. As much as I love a Bordeaux, or old world styled California wine, as well as Pinot Noir and other wines from Ca, Or, Wa, Germany, France, Portugal and Italy, I have to say many of these wines from Chile and Argentina are incredible and absolute steals for the money.

  • Lovely, a top example of Carmenere that does not have the over the top, green, or cedar notes, this was just fabulous - Black, well concentrated with notes of plum, black cherry, cigar box, cedar, mint and vanilla extract on the nose, well structured and balanced, very smooth on the finish with excellent length, awesome (92 Points).

  • Dark. Medium-sized bouquet. full flavour, dark berries. some tannins, but subsided. drink now.

  • Decanted, 60 minutes aeration before pouring. Dark purple hue. Fresh blackberries, cassis, crushed stones, earth, and subtle green aromas (fresh green beans) on the nose. Medium-plus body. On the palate, polished flavors of fresh mountain berries mixed with earth and minerals lead to a tannic. medium-length finish that includes some of the under-ripe, green flavors hinted at on the nose. Touch of spice from the oak emerges after additional aeration. As this wine continues to open, one really gets a favorable impression of what qualities great Chilean terrior can endow the Bordeaux varietals with...
In fact, when tasting higher end Chilean wines, I sometimes have a tough time distinguishing which varietal I'm tasting; they often have such wonderful purity and freshness that is more reminiscent of good Bordeaux than many give them credit for. But the finesse they posses is what truly sets them apart from many other New World wines made in a Bordeaux style (and, IMHO, it is this quality that is cementing Chile's reputation as a world class producer).
    But I digress.
Back to this great Carmenere, it has barely budged since I last tasted in 2007 and needs at least another 2-3 years in the cellar. If opening now, be sure to decant for at least 2 hours before pouring.

  • Pop n pour. A dark plum core with a watery edge and 3 transitions. An utterly stunning nose of black & blue fruits, vanilla, chocolate morsels and damp earth. As impressive as the nose was, the palate was just a notch above with layer after layer of ripe berries, cream and a kiss of oak. Simply gorgeous and truly multi-dimensional. Drink this full-bodied beauty thru 2014

  • Definitely balanced, as others have mentioned or implied. Like most of this producer's bottlings, this wine has the right amount of toasty oak and ripe black fruit without veering into overblown territory. After several hours in the glass on night two it started taking on some seriously dark tarry notes and got rather heady at that point. Powerful but controlled tannins. Smooth medium to full body.

  • Last bottle - :(. Really evolving nicely. Fruit, wood, finish all in balance. 3-5 years of life left, but drinking great now. Give it .5 - 1 hr air, then enjoy. Red fruit, cigar box, classic structure. Nice!

  • Made from 85% Carménère, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc this wine spent 13 months in French oak and an additional 8 in the bottle. Deep red in colour, this wine shows berry fruit, grated dark chocolate and cigar box characters on the nose. The palate is full bodied - more red fruit, toasty oak and elegant tannins.

  • COLOR - dark, dark, tarry red/purple. NOSE - asphalt, tar, hot day smells; pleasant, but very dark and brooding. TASTE - tar is predominant, but rather subtle; the wine is very austere, but mellow. RATING - 88.

  • A very good wine, with all the typical carmenere attributes. Very dark, purplish red colour. With some air revealing chocolate, raspberry and green bellpepper aromas. Well worth its price, however without the complexity that would warrant a score in the mid-90s.

  • Decanted 3 hours, and the last sip was even better than the first.

First whiff was totally Skittles, and I expected this to be a big sloppy fruit bomb. On the palate, however, this was refined and light on its feet, with a really fun watermelon note. This continued to get better throughout the night.

  • Very dark and concentrated purple in the glass, nose really opened up after a three hour decant and warming a bit to room temp showing gobs of plums, vanilla, chocolate, and bacon fat. The palate was round for such a big wine with concentrated flavors, low acidity, and finish full of cocoa and sweet tannin. This wine has plently of life left, but needs no more aging to work itself out, it is drinking well now.

  • Decanted. Poured after 60 minutes in the decanter. Dark red/purple hue, very deep. Raspberry/blackberry, spice, and vegetal pepper aromas on the nose. Nicely concentrated, this young wine was at first a little tight. Waited another 60 minutes and retasted to find that it was really starting to open up with an amazing purity of fruit flavor I do not often find (the purity reminded me of a great vintage of Qupe Hillside Estate Syrah). The fruit and spice is shaded in oak, the finish long and tannic. The tannic finish suggests that this has life ahead of it - I wouldn't be surprised to retaste next year and come to the same conclusion.
This is not a 95 point wine (WA score), but, IMO, is still outstanding.

  • TNs: 1998 Pegau Reservee, 2002 Domus Aurea, 2004 Numanthia Termes & 2004 Terrunyo Carmenere Peumo Vineyard (Guadalajara, Mexico): Had at Abejo's club house w/ Vane, Amanda, Juan Aretos, Delia, etc.

I picked a couple of bottles of this 95 pointer from Jay Miller and I was dying to try it. The color is incredibly appealing, full, opaque purple. The nose lacks the herbaceous predominance that plagued early Carmenere varietal wines from the 1990s. This was obviously picked ripe, but I cannot really pinpoint a varietal style here. Smells similar to Syrah and Cab Franc. The palate offers a full bodied wine that is somewhat monolithic as it offers black fruits and nothing more. A very ripe, enjoyable wine, but lacking the aromatic complexity that I require to score the wine higher. Two bottles.

  • Totally black color. Super intense nose of blueberry and blackberry, joined by earthy and animal tones, refines it self with a bit of air. Very heavy on the palate, intense and concentrated, loads of dark fruit. Towards the end some plums and butter, and a good tannin kick.

  • The nose of this wine is really remarkable. The last time I smelled something so profound was SQN Papa. So close to a great wine, just lacking some fruit and a good finish. A bit herbal tasting. The wine seemed to close down with air instead of opening up.

  • Jwobbk recommended this fine wine from Chile and we added to our selections for our wine tasting weekend. As others have mentioned, the wine has an intense nose and delivers a excellent balance of dark cherries, and chocolate, and finishes with an earthy tone. I would like to locate another bottle and let it age in the cellar for a year or two to see how this one develops.

  • Seductive and layered aromatics show dark cherries, dark chocolate, earth and spice. On the palate the fruits show opulent and rich. Flavors of earth and green herbs wonderfully accent the rich dark cherry fruit. The earth and herb character is quite distinct. There is bright acidity providing lift and a weightlessness on the back palate. The finish is long and full of herbs, earth and dark, chocolatey fruit. Uniquely delicious. (4+14+18+9=95)

  • Nose that says right bank Bordeaux. Earth, char, oak, dusty fruit. Dark and opaque in the glass, thick legs. Tannins emerge with a little air, but the fruit is right there with it. Higher acid than some, but balance is there. I think this will age well, so I might have to buy a few more to put down.

  • Drank this bottle with Fillets of beef served on a bed of onion, mushroom, bacon, and garlic that was sauteed in the wine. Accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes.

Wine has a dark garnet almost black core with a ruby red rim. The nose is big, but tight at the same time with muted fruit and a slightly floral perfumed note. There is also a meaty smokey aspect to the nose and palate. The mouthfeel is big and round with an understated fruit. The meaty, gamy note comes through on the mid-palate, and there is enough oak to show. The tannins are in good balance and not overly astringent. They seem to develop well over the finish, wihich unfortunately is shorter than expected and has none of the cofee or chocolate that I would expect from the variety.

  • Deep crimson-purple; blackberry jam, blueberries, iodine; concentrated fruit, earthy, spicy, slightly oaky, full body, good grip, soft ripe tannins, lingering finish.

  • AD Trade show: Very pretty, dark purple color, although the darkness is slightly intimidating. Much lighter in the mouth, as the tannins are quite managable. There's the dark fruit and some spice. A little grip does come into play. Maybe it was my palate, or the wines I was drinking, but it almost seemed a little diluted. Will have to retaste.
