Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. A blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot. Med (+) ruby with a garnet rim. Developing, with red cherry, blackberry, tobacco and sweet baking spices (thanks to twelve months of aging in Slavonian oak casks and French barrique). Dry, but fruit forward and rounded. Med. acidity, med to med (+), polished but drying tannins, and med alcohol (13%). Med (+) body, concentration and length, with a licorice note on the finish. It is still drinking well and is likely to continue to improve over the next couple of years. Very good QPR.

Good everyday drinker; about $16 It’s a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, 15% Merlot Tastes of sour black cherries, old fashioned “Tab cola” and menthol Still quite tannic. Medium bodied. Although 13% alcohol, a bit hot upon opening; better on day 2.

Color: medium garnet, brick red edges, broad thick legs Nose: ripe cherry, warm chocolate, amaretto Palate: hefty ripe cherry at the front, raw woodiness, Mouthfeel: light/medium body, very, very tannic
This 2015 has a massive tannic structure. It should age for some time even at its price point. Let it lay.

Moderate barnyard on the nose; Black fruit moves directly into a funky, earthy core with a simple finish. Good, hearty, appropriate for a meat stew etc.

One of the small winemakers in Umbria (see: Raína), who popped up in recent years and are doing an excellent job. Halfway between Montefalco and Bevagna and a bit like "garage". This rosso is a blend of a lot sangiovese, something like 15 % sagrantino and some merlot. Nose: sweet sour cherry jam, young tips of fir/bit of blackthorn (sagrantino?). Taste: sour cherry jam, blackthorn, coke, nice coarse grained tannins, good acidity and still "roundness" (merlot?). Excellent value for money. By the way Bevagna is a gem like Montefalco.

This is about the fourth night I've been sipping from this bottle. Very enjoyable, can't imagine a much better value for a Tuscan. Has some merlot mixed with the sangiovese.

Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. A blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot. Medium (+) ruby with a garnet rim. The nose is clean, developing, with red cherry, blackberry, tobacco and sweet baking spices (thanks to twelve months of aging in Slavonian oak casks and French barrique). The palate is dry, but fruit forward and rounded. The acidity is medium. The alcohol is high at 14.5%, but is not particularly noticeable. The tannins are medium and smoother than expected. This wine still seems fresh, youthful and medium-bodied, despite the high alcohol level. It is drinking well now and is likely to continue to improve over the next couple of years. A very good value.

Barnyard, plum, dried thyme. Round with fresh acidity and soft tannins. Rustic. It lacks some fruit in the mid palate, but it finishes long with a good mix of dark berry and earth.

From the wine list at Le Zie (NYC). Red fruited with some dusty tannins and an earthiness with a hint of bitterness on the finish. More of a quaffable table wine, not bad but not very interesting.

For the descriptors, I refer to Huse's excellent note from 24 February 2018 - although my impression is that the tannins are grippier than he suggests. It's a very clever blend, with the Sangiovese providing the base line and most of the character, the Sagrantino adding extra tannic structure and the Merlot providing some extra roundness and weight. An expressive wine, on the cusp of 88 points.

90m air. Deep Purple color. Aromas of plum, red berries, vanilla and spice bok. Fresh and lively on the palate, with flavors of dark fruit, a hint of spice and firm tannins providing structure. Loses steam in the finish, which gets chewy and tart. If i had more, I would give them some short-term cellaring to see how that resolves. But as it is, won't buy more.

Pleasing Umbria wine, a blend of 70 % Sangiovese, 15 % Sagrantino and 15 % Merlot ; aged for 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels (70 %) and in French barriques (30 %). Decanted: one hour in advance. The wine shows a dark violet-red color and a fragrant nose of black cherries, dried herbs, charcoal and a hint of pepper and lavender. The medium- to full-bodied palate reveals rich red berry and plum fruit, a good structure and quite supple tannins. Harmonious finish. Drinking beautifully now, but with potential for development over the next couple of years. A good accompaniment to charcuterie, aged cheese and white meat dishes. Drinking window: now–2022.

88+ I like it Simona don’t. Simple with a nice sour cherry, herb, faint menthol aroma. Almost no tannins, short finish.

As others have noted, this is a great value. Very enjoyable, but tannic and needs food. Very fruity -- black more than red flavors.
