-- decanted 1 hr. before initial taste -- -- tasted non-blind over a couple hrs. --
NOSE: expressive; underbrushy, with some light oak and buttery lemon; medium richness; pretty standard/straightforward Chardonnay aromas.
BODY: cork soaked halfway; medium golden yellow color; medium-light to medium bodied.
TASTE: surprisingly light, and lacking in drive; most of the action is on the mid palate; lots of mineral; comes across as a ripe-but-somewhat-weak-Chablis; medium to medium+ acidity; alc. not noticeable (12.5%); finish is of medium-light intensity, but it actually carries-on for quite some time -- certainly longer than the flavor intensity would suggest. Drink Now.

From 500ml. I have never been much of a Bearwallow believer, but this really impressed me. The nose is at turns reticent, but in flashes it shows a combination of wet stone, pear, nutmeg, and walnut skin that would not be out of place in a lineup of Puligny 1er crus. The palate is broad in presentation and full without viscosity, and there's a sneaky acidic streak that creeps in on the side palate as well. The finish has good focus on the mid palate, with green apple making an appearance to complement the minerality of the aromas. Really very impressive and in early maturity. Sorry I don't have more.

From 500 ML bottle, this seemed a little flat for to me compared to some others. The acidity was a little muted but it had a nice tropical fruit profile and a little citrus. Soft and playful was how I thought about it. It seemed a little less serious than some previous experiences. Nice and easy to drink however. P.S. this was still good 6 days later after keeping in the fridge.l

PnP, and showing well right away. Nice aromas with apple, peach, citrus, green herbs, and a light oak (the oak seems to really mellowed). Similr flavors, well balanced with a long smooth finish. In its drinking window. My last bottle, but no hurry.

A bit on the light side….almost Chablis-like, but not quite as crisp. Nose is subtle, with citrus and mineral notes. Meyer lemon, beeswax, and some floral elements on the palate. Texture “thickens” towards the finish. Good stuff, but not as good as some of the Rhys Chards I’ve had.
Monthly Tasting Group: Chardonnay (Oceanaire, Mpls, MN): Ultra pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. I found this to be drinking pretty lean and lively with good minerality and lemon fruit, tropical notes more in the background, fairly light bodied and the oak seems well integrated. Much more subtle and elegant than expect, and I mean that as a positive. It might not have the oomph that many look for but I thought it was pretty classy.

The recent notes immediate prior to mine capture this wine well. Unfortunately. There's no THERE there. Very light bodied, which is ok, but lacks concentration. It never really developed. Lean. Acidity that is not balanced or buffered. Very pedestrian.

Pale gold in the glass with a shy nose. Palate of green apple, citrus, passion fruit, and pleasant oak. Mild acidity, which seems to be our experience with the Bearwallow chards. Not as dazzled by this wine as others have been. I wish it were more zippy.

Light and translucent lemon color. Fairly muted nose of lemon, ripe green apple with a little chalk. Light on the palate, light fruit, zesty acidity ending with a long finish. Good but would like a little more complexity.

Opened an decanted about an hour. Initially kind of tight. Great aromas with apple, peach, citrus, green herbs, and a little more oak than I normally like. However, the fruit and acidity balance the oak very well. Long smooth finish. Still needs time, but starting to show what it has.

About a year and a half since I really sat down and tasted through a bottle of this wine. Opened the current bottle about 4 hours ago, took to a party then brought a small amount home for this note. The aromatic of oak infuses the wine, with a mix of vanilla bean and some toast, as well as flavoring aspects of the palate. I don't mind the oak here because the fruit is able to play alongside it, with a distinct lemony quality to the wine, along with green apple, dried pineapple, ginger and flint. The weight here is squarely medium and with the listed all of 12.5%, and pairing this with an arugula salad, it drinks great. Nothing heavy here, a more lithe version of Bear Chard and one that seems to be cruising along just fine. FWIW, some tasters noted either a ripeness or flamboyant quality to the wine....I don't find that.

This is the first Rhys Chardonnay that I've found genuinely impressive and tasty. Although I'm a devoted fan of their Pinots, the Rhys Chardonnays have seemed too shrill and thin. This wine, though young, has a citrus-driven viscosity and richness that helps balance out the bright and energetic fruit of the wine.
Light yellow, almost silver in color; medium in body; nose of green apple, gooseberry, and ocean air. Tastes of lemon rind, grapefruit, and crushed rock, with a finish that is zippy in taste but creamy in mouthfeel. If you're looking for vanilla, nuts, or wood, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a lean (12.5% alcohol!?) but tasty wine, try this. Given the understated fruit, I'll be curious how this ages, but it's refreshing and intriguing at the moment. More open-knit and round on second day (in a good way). Drink in next few years.

This is good, but the qpr is not great. What does it say when I can find stylistically quite similar white burgundy that is of comparable quality, yet significantly cheaper. Anyway, pop and pour. Notes from 1 hr open. Lemon oil, a touch of vanilla on the nose, maybe some chamomile, and a fair amount of sweet cream. On the palate, good acidity, meyer lemon custard with a touch of vanilla, good density and texture. Good acidity on the tangy and light finish.
Ino, this could pass as white burg, but then why not just drink the real thing?
Day 2: Refrigerated overnight. Make no mistake, this is an excellent bottle of wine, and likely to gain complexity with age. Showing no signs of oxidation today, and very yummy.

Great Chardonnay. Has a crisp, bright characater. Quite lively on the nose and palate and really fans out on the finish. Adds a little toast/Leeds on nose and palate. Love the balance of crisp emergetic fruit but with plenty of ripeness. Has a nice lemon and green apple influence. Impressive young wine. From 375.

Medium golden straw. Bright and surprisingly flamboyant — but with signature Rhys backbone acid, a cornucopia of savory flavors, and lovely minerality. Deep and lingering finish. Comparing to prior vintages of the same at this early age, we think this might be a step above. Highly enjoyable over three nights.

Much lighter in body than the Santa Cruz Mountains chardonnays. Slightly green in tint, with oyster and ocean flavors - not unlike a village or Petit Chablis. Very fresh and highly drinkable. Not sure the price is right, though.

July 2018 Rhys Visit--Taste The 2016s (Rhys Estate (At The Winery)): It shows the lemon peel that is part of the 2016 Alesia Anderson Valley, so if you like this aspect (as I very much do), than you can find that here, too. And to affirm the thinking that vineyard designate wines (like this Bear) should be a step-up from the declassed version (Alesia AV), well it really is: there is more polish and the finish really lengthens in this Bear. The purity of the lemon is on display here, along with some anise and a precise focus of flavor.
