The 2017 Kupp Spätlese Faß 7 is, in a word, excellent. Grapefruit, apricot, wild flower, and wet stone on the forward nose. The palate is at once both racey and rich, with an almost unami quality coating your mouth and persisting long after you finish. Hard to resist today but huge upside to anyone who can wait.

I know it's a bit of a shame to open this now, but wow. Candied lemon, lime, white flowers, fresh mountain stream, and wet stone aromas jump from the glass. The flavor intensity matches, and the balance of acidity and sweetness is on point. Definitely needs some more time, but very enjoyable now if you prefer your spatlese on the younger side. I would say hold for a quite a while, as this is only going to get better.

[07 18] Ripe yellow stone fruit, hints of exotic fruit, crushed stones, floral notes on the nose. On the palate rich, almost opulent with lots of acidity. Very well balanced overall with a persistent, saline finish. 92-93+

(Barrel sample) Slight sulfur smell with wood, mushroom, patchouli - clean hippie. Light and not that sweet. Feral notes, wild flowers and grass. Broad shoulders. Bight and has a real presence. Slight resin and pine. Gets a bit loose on finish, but clean bright acids really carry it. ~80g rs 7%

Sunflower yellow; subtlety intriguing, restrained, finessed bouquet; finely chiselled, racy, beautifully balanced, off-dry; thrilling tension on a lingering finish.
