2015 No Girls Grenache

  • Welp, I got one of the odd bottles. Nose is quite pretty and palate starts exactly as I'd hope, soft tannins, great mouthfeel, lovely fruit. About 10 seconds after drinking, there's a rising bitter aftertaste that's not enjoyable at all. Kind of a cross between Swiss chard and some sort of medicinal note. Not recommended.

  • It’s not at all unusual for some grenache to have something very similar to cranberries, that is both a type of tart mouthfeel and the unique flavor of cranberries. It’s one of many things that make the variety so interesting and flavorful. I never had one where the cranberry like character was dominant or off-putting until this wine. This literally drank like fermented cranberry juice. It opened a very promising WW rocks nose and it smelled great throughout the evening. There were some WW rocks elements, sage/dust/nori/soy, on the palate too but the cranberry juice character just blew everything else out of the water. This is really not what I’m looking for in a wine at all. 2- (out of 5).

  • Plenty of musty funk on initial pour. Within 5 minutes , it opens and becomes a complex deep , semi- brooding, big taster. Was surprisingly smooth 30 minutes after pour.

  • Really interesting wine and significantly better than the last bottle I opened. It took about 30 minutes to open up and blow off some of the "Rocks" funk. Then it settled into a groove with raspberry, plum, smoke, bacon grease, and gravel. Lots of gravel. Silky smooth tannins and solid body. Evolved nicely over the evening with the flavors becoming less fruit and more spice. Note: it did not hold up the second day. A distinct The mineral spirit component became dominant. Regardless, this is drinking really well now. Probably hitting a peak that can continue for another 5-8 years.

  • Appreciate the sentiments of recent posters on this wine - I've seen tremendous bottle variation for several vintages of No Girls Grenache. It was this phenomena that caused me to give up my allocation of this wine (I still buy the No Girls Syrah and sometimes the Tempranillo).

This bottle was decent - opened to familiar notes of Cayuse/C Baron funk. Flavor palate was good/decent but not spectacular.

None of the green, "off" notes I've observed previously and other commenters have noted.

    Overall solid but nothing special

  • This wine is shockingly bad. I have had several ethereal, glorious Grenaches from No Girls but this one was a stinker. It started off fine with a nice nose of smoked meat, white pepper, red fruit and plenty of floral notes but it finished a taste that reminded me of xylene (not that I've drunk any xylene, mind you!). It was sour, bitter and chemical. Wondering if it might burn off with time, I set it aside and came back 2 hours later. Still the same, if not worse. I even saved some for day 2 and it isn't any better. Based on the variable scores I'm seeing, I suspect there is a TON of barrel variability in this wine. I have 4 more, hoping this one was the outlier. But, drinker beware!, you too may wind up with a glassful of xylene.

  • Raspberries, hints of dusty earth and slight earthy funk.. Rich perfume red berries, smoked meats, violets. Very distinctive. Rating would likely be higher but I'm finding my palate is changing as I drink more Krankl wines!

  • Super funky. Thought time might mellow this out, but it’s hard to find the fruit. Enjoy.

  • Raspberries, hints of dusty earth and funk on the nose. Polished mouthfeel very different from the Cayuse brand. Paired with Pizza Supreme.

  • I don’t understand the low scores for this. My wife and I are drinking it and loving it. Classic silky Cayuse mouthfeel; like they sanded off the rough edges and got up to the 1000 grit sandpaper. Slight funk of dry-aged meat, black fruits, black olive, balanced acidity and fruit. Addictive.

  • Medium garnet, slightly translucent. The nose is very open, mostly red fruits, like cherries and berries, not overly complex. Very viscous, lots of glycerin. The taste at first is sweet, round red fruits, but as it moves to the back of my tongue it gets noticeably bitter, which persists in a long aftertaste and greatly detracts from the overall impression. I have had some bitterness initially in Cayuse syrahs but it usually blows off fairly quickly. This came on late but made it unpleasant. Last bottle and happy about that. I've enjoyed No Girls syrahs but this misses the mark.

  • I get the same very harsh bitter green like eating raw broccoli rabe that lingers on the top and back of my palate just like a bitter food would feel. I’m wondering if it’s simply a winemaking flaw rather than underripe grapes which I dont think is the case. It kind of overpowers the funk which is present on the nose but then its hard to refocus after the first taste. Seems like the most prominent mistake of the grape seeds in the winemaking if I were to take a guess. I’m up for my club repurchase 3rd year now and not sure I love the idea of purchasing flawed $100 wine. Any one else get this same sense? I loved the tempranillo and syrah but this 2015 grenache seems unfortunate. The communiry 87 might be generous unless there were multiple runs and only half of the wine was flawed.

  • Not sure what's going on with this wine, but despite no obvious oxidation, TCA or heat exposure, it's dominated by sour fruit and green notes with flabby structure and little to commend it. At some point I'll get to trying my remaining bottles and see if this character remains, but considering this was so undesirable I'm not in any hurry.

  • Much better than two years ago when this was bitter, sour, and green. Sweet ripe red fruit up front with a bitter green element still lingering on the finish. I suppose we’ll call that The Rocks charm and nothing more. The funkiness really fades at about the second hour but never disappears.

  • There’s a excess of green pepper on an otherwise sweet base. My main complaint is a bitter finish and lingering aftertaste.

  • Much more mature and delicious than was last year. More inviting on first taste with a slight minerality on finish... is now a keeper

  • Really not sure what to make of this bottle. It’s my second time drinking this exact wine, and I don’t recall the first being so strange. Candy strawberry, stems and lots of reductive funkiness. However, the palate was quite bitter and metallic (maybe brett?). Left it open for three days and it never resolved. I’ve had much better from this producer, but this was a weird one.

  • Full throttle Grenache. Notes of lilac and tar on the nose, and a distinctive briary punch on the taste. Long, eclectic finish. Really unique. Enjoy.

  • Not really sure what the other CT raters are drinking, but this is epically killer juice. Third bottle, first note. Double decanted, paired with Doughzone. Typical Rocks perfume. Silky, layered, bright finish. One really can’t ask for more from this varietal. Drinking nicely now.

  • Decanted about 1 hour. Nice smokey nose upon opening, typical of Cayuse style grenache. Palate was somewhat muted red fruit, but then the finish was really bad, almost chemical. Very sour, metallic, and it persisted. Disappointment.

  • A bit minerally and flat. Good but just not memorable

  • Medium to light consistency with nothing but iron/blood on the front. Finish is clipped, sour, and nothing but bitter greens. Possible the whole cluster % kills this one. Likely needs time but not one for me. I’m opting out next year.
