An upper shoulder bottle bought a few months ago along with the 1967 drunk earlier this week. Both bottles clearly well kept in the same conditions with good labels and corks that came out whole with the butlers friend. This cork more saturated. Good fruit with a leathery flavour. An interesting comparison. The 70 is darker and has a lot more fruit. Both finishes are good and long. Despite being a better vintage with more fruit and well integrated with soft tannins the 1970 lacks the perfume and charm of the 1967. Celebrating delivery of the Oscar India.

Medium tawny colour. The nose shows pronounced intensity aromas of tobacco leaf, forest floor, ashes, cedar and hints of plums jam and very ripe cherries.
The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium+ refreshing acidity. It has medium+ soft tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium+ body with pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long.
It is an outstanding quality wine. It has a lingering finish and a remarkable fruit concentration well-balanced by the freshness provided by the acidity and the tannic structure. It also shows complexity provided by oak and bottle ageing.

After 30 minutes it was probably an 86 and I gave up on it. 3 hours later it may have moved into the low 90s. So give this wine plenty of time to decant

Drank alongside a '70 Chateau Batailley. The Leoville did not show as well as the Batailley. Very muted aromas of black currant and dark wild cherries. More fruity on the palate - black berries and tart cherries. Quite a bit of acidity on the back palate which give the wine an unpleasant sour note on the thankfully short finish. Definitely years past its prime.

Cork was soaked through with a little mold under the foil cap. Wine was thin garnet in color. No fruit on the nose - only earthiness, wet field, and oily leather. Tasting confirmed our suspicion that the wine was past - thin, acidic and undrinkable.

Kahns "Look What We Found" Tasting Event (Seasons 52, Indianapolis): My opening wine of the night. A complex wine that included strong minerality, floral elements, mild cassis, and strawberry. No tannins were evident, possibly beginning decline but still a lovely and complex wine.

San Antonio Wine Geeks - Leoville Barton Vertical (Steve's house): Splash decanted 30min prior to tasting. High neck fill and crumbly cork stained to top, possible seepage just at top of cork. Initially very musty nose with forest floor. After a while it became more “band-aid” like and medicinal, with a minty quality I began to get from most of the lineup. Acidic thin palate, lacking fruit and a short clipped finish. Not enjoyable really and over the hill, but a good comparison to the rest of the lineup.

A vigorous and vital claret, this really exceeded expectations. Bottle, fill and cork all good. Wine was decanted for about one hour prior to drinking. Earthy, current, cedar all developing nicely over an hour and a half. Very St. Julien. The finish was slighly attenuated, in keeping with the vintage, but this was ameliorated with time in the glass and proper food. One guest immediately went on-line to try to find more. Very reliable chateau and a fine wine.

Leoville-Barton Vertical (Nook): Sourced from Rare Wine Co., a top-shoulder bottle in beautiful shape. Fully mature and in fact the only fully mature wine of the vertical. Tannins are totally resolved into a polished, buttery texture, a svelte vehicle for the pale cranberry fruit with a nice bite of refreshing tartness. The wine improves in the decanter over several hours, the initial musty and rusty aromas segueing to something more gravelly while the finish develops a persistent note of cigar tobacco.

My resignation from Microsoft (Seattle, WA, USA): This was a bottle acquired from Garagiste 18 months ago. There was a bit of crusted wine on top of the cork which was wet pretty much to the top, but the fill was solid, just barely below base neck. Upon opening the wine was clearly sound with no off aromas. The initial aromatics were mute, but the palate was ripe with a somewhat tight, acidic finish. I decanted 2/3 of the bottle and went to work. The wine was at its best from 60-90 minutes after being opened with loads of cedar and currant fruit on the nose and a hint of bay leaf. On the palate this is totally resolved and ready to enjoy with loads of pure, sweet fruit and fantastically smooth mouthfeel. The wine shows its age on the finish with a bit of astringency and drying tannins. Still, this was a gorgeous, mature claret that was a joy to sip for 3+ hours. Well done!

At SRO/Crocker. Decent ruby color. Starting to get some orange at the rim. Nose is unusual but very good. Coffee bean quality. Palate is pretty fair. 5-10-15-7: 87/100.

Biskuit is right. The Barton was outperformed by the '70 Lanessan in the glass next to it.

Fine wine. Mature, on the dry side, interesting undergrowth and cedar character.
