Decanted for 60 minutes then poured back into the bottle with the cork returned for an additional 8 hours at 61 degrees. Consumed out of Bordeaux shaped glass at a tapa restaurant. Paired with many different pasta, fried and meat dishes.
The color is very dark purple. The nose was of black fruits, spices and hints of tobacco. The palate was of ultra ripe blue/black fruits (ie blueberry & blackberry), brown spices, cocoa and espresso. It was a super concentrated, opulant, full-bodied wine that was a pleasure to drink today but may provide a greater experience in a few more years as the wine integrates more and becomes a bit more balanced and less jammy.
My score today is 94.5 but it has the stuffing to gain a point or 2 with additional cellaring. If I had another bottle, my ideal drinking window for this bottle would be between 2024-2027.

So good. Magenta /purple. Loads of mocha, dark chocolate, espresso and dusty black fruits. Plush, mouth coating, glass staining and highly memorable. Nice acidity, ripe tannins, long finish. Cheers all!

First Napa ‘17 I’ve tried and pleasantly surprised. It was the last bottle of the evening and it was PNP, but still was not a disappointment. Still though leave those ‘17’s alone for 3-5 years and I believe you will be properly rewarded.

Napa day trip (VHR, Bevan, Lokoya) (Napa): Aromas of red fruits and a bit of blue fruits, red flowers, dark green shrubs and leafy notes. On the palate, the red fruits ride a bit higher, dark minerals but with a shiny element to it, bitter and wet tree bark and a pleasant juiciness. Although juicy and nice brightness to it, it was without freshness.

Sat 30 min in glass before drinking. Nearly opaque electric magenta color. Blueberry, maple syrup, blackberry, and subtle espresso on the nose. Smooth, dry palate. Soft tannins on the longish finish. Terrific for a ‘17, but it is what it is.

Decanted. Really hit it’s stride after two hours of air. Welcoming nose full of fruit & floral aromas. Silky smooth, lots of dark fruit flavors & a lasting finish.

Still early but Bevan wines generally drink very well early. This wine is incredible. Many aren’t thrilled about 2017 Napa vintage but the best winemakers can deliver regardless. Russell is a master. I could go broke drinking these wines daily.

Broke this open with friends who had never tasted Bevan. Man was I embarrassed. Tasted with a '15. The 15 was way better, this being closed. Wondered if it entered a dormant stage since extremely muted flavor. This was wonderful at a tasting a year ago. Very disappointed in this one. If I had not had prior Bevans, I would have thought certainly not worth the price....at all. Would never have identified this as Bevan in a blind tasting. Definitely hold a few years. Hoping for the best.
Really an amazing wine. Decided to prematurely open a bottle, mainly on a whim based on a bit of curiosity about wanting to try a high end 2017 Napa cab. Given the mixed reviews of this vintage I was pleasantly surprised with what a great bottle I had opened. This wine is extremely smooth with ultra fine tannins, showing off the distinctive Stags Leap terroir reminiscent of a much older HSS. Very dark fruits, spice and an earthy quality that should improve quite a bit as the wine settles in over time. I was taken back by how approachable this wine was so early on, which is a good indication that this is truly a star in the making.

Bevan Tasting at Nos Caves Vin; 6/1/2019-6/2/2019 (Houston, TX): Tasted with the Bevan crew in Houston. This was my best in show and our group’s best in show and was a stunning wine. Did not seem to suffer from any bottle shock. Definitely reminded me of the barrel sample from last summer. Fine grained tannins, super dark purple. More darker fruit profile here, blackberry and blueberry. Showed less oak than the other wines. I think ‘17 Wildfoote may be better than the ‘16.

Bevan 2017 barrel samples and 2016 wines: Barrel sample. Beautiful and polished, especially considering it was right out of barrel, with a finesse and seductiveness that harkens back to the 2012 Wildfoote. The 2016 Wildfoote is currently the one that is behaving like a powerful barrel sample; this 2017 acted like it had been in bottle for a couple of years.
Ultra pure and silky, with purple and black core fruit seamlessly gliding across the palate. Blackberry, black currant, deep and ripe purple plum, blueberry, and violet/floral notes saturated the mouth. Wonderfully balanced concentration and tempered intensity. This is a wine I anticipate being beautifully accessible upon release. My personal favorite of the 2017s sampled. 97-98+ points.

BAM! Bevan is not timid! Enjoyable but I’d like the big, bold fruit to mellow and integrate more over time. Still a fan.

A lot changed since my first bottle of this in 2020. It’s done sleeping and has integrated. It was even better the second day.
