"Pairs with Sadness" (Chicago, IL): Brilliant stuff as always. This is definitely a fleshier, riper edition, with so much fruit that it feels like this has retained a hint of residual sweetness. It's not as delineated and cut as the magnificent 2019, but there is certainly an allure to this edition of a perennial favourite.

Bright and powerful nose, full of citrus and green apple and sweet herbs and crushed stone, classically Riesling. Dense and silky, almost chewy with fine extract, but lacks precision. Enough acid but not exactly racy. Could use a little more length.

A year later ( i could not wait another year), the wine has opened up beautifully. Some petrol in the nose, much minerality, lingering aftertaste: a mighty riesling in the making. 93+

This was decanted in the fridge for a few hours before drinking. The nose is deep, balanced, and fresh as it fills the glass with green apples, a touch of petrol, peaches, crushed rocks, saline, limes, acacia flowers, jasmine, and white fruits. The Medium bodied feel is vibrant and balanced with tart, high acidity that is backed up by a fresh, lengthy finish. This has really developed in the nearly 3 years since I last had it. The palate has fleshed out more and while the acidity has cut, it is much more integrated. This is in a great place right now. Though it will easily age longer, it has entered its window and is a beautiful Halenberg.
Took just a bit of air to blow off the petro nose. Loved the density and concentration on this. Great core of stone fruit, straw, and fresh minerality. Nice roundness. Delicious now with the structure to age very nicely.

Lys gul tendenser til grønnlig farge. Duft av modne frukter, lett petroleum, flint. Moderat syre, gule frukter, hvit pære, noe fedme men ikke mye, lett steinete.

Lys gul, lett pale. Grønne epler, sitron, litt voks, steinete, lett badeball. Medium syre, moden litt fet med gule frukter som dominerer. Balansen er ikke helt der, men det er en god konsentrasjon. Deilig mineralsk og sitter lenge.

This bottle was included in a "Lobenbergs Wein-Abo" subscription. Bright medium yellow gold, with a touch of CO2. Ripe lemon, peach, tropical fruit notes, apple blossom, mild herbal and mild earthy tones as well as mild spice are joined by smoky and chalky minerality, with lively acidity and superb length. Saline. Good concentration. Will be long-lived, but needs time. (92+)

Dry Riesling on the rooftop (logan square, Chicago IL): Oh wow. Just wow. This completely shits on the 2016 and I was already in love with the 16. This takes everything the 16 had and dials it up another notch and a half with layered, deep, and pristine tones of saline, white peaches, smoke, oils, green apples, crushed rocks, gun flint, a touch of reduction, papaya, nectarines, jasmine, acacia flowers, lemon zest, and a bit of vanilla. There is a real electricity to the nose while showing off a ton of balance that almost makes you think its a high-wire act when in reality its all grounded. The Medium bodied feel carries through that great depth and balance while showing a friendly yet refine nature along with racy, high acidity. This has a very long life ahead of it and though I do wonder how much better it will get, it's still a great dry Riesling that reaches towards the top of the mountain within the style.

Halenberg / Chevalier tasting-cum-lunch (Wine Bar 4850, Amsterdam, NL): Wonderful interplay of ripe fruit and minerally freshness, youthful, floral, peach, hint of tropical fruit, elegant, smoky slate, very expressive, juicy and supple, beautifully integrated firm acidity, salty, lovely now, great future.

First retailer tasting of the topical GG vintage (Mövenpick winestore, Hamburg, Germany): Frankly, this is one of the reference bottlings from the Nahe and therefore from the whole of Germany, this energetic showing, tension rules again, salty, stone licking, zesty yellow fruit, lots of Riesling race, taut, great density, very lingering aftertaste, for the next decade++, *(****), reference, 96(+) potential

Barrel sample. Tasted after 2018 Halgans. Less expressive on the nose at this stage - slightly herbal, mineral, some white and yellow fruit and impressive depth. On the palate super precise and focussed, very bright and vibrant. Lots of minerality and freshness, good fruit, very very long. This needs time, but is very promising. 95-96+(+)

Typical Riesling aromas but lesss fruity and powerful as you would guess for this warm vintage 2018. Opened but focused and precise. 92-93
