  • Great stuff for a Rosso - great vintage

  • One reason why I love side-by-side tasting - the vibrancy of this wine is immediately evident after having a glass of the mature Stella do Campalto. Whenever I try a Pian dell'Orino, one of my most frequent thoughts is why don't I buy more of his wine? They don't resonate with me quite as much as Stella's wines do, but they are very close and generally more reasonably priced.

A focused nose with red & black fruit, good acidity and persistence on the palate, this wine is really delicious. It's a Friday afternoon, the stock market closed up and I'm sitting here with some Parmigiana Reggiano and a couple Rossos - life is good!

  • Beautiful, classic Montalcino Sangiovese profile. Excellent vintage shines. Cherries, balanced tannins, beautiful in the glass. A little bite in the finish, not unpleasant.

  • This Rosso is better than many brunellos. Bright flavors, superbly balanced, and a great match for our pasta puttanesca tonight. Keep an eye on this house; it is on the rise

  • Day 1: Sweet cherry, balsamic vinegar, dried herbs/menthol and hazelnuts. Med+ body and an impressively lengthy finish. Really well rounded and the tannins are just starting to integrate. Delicious now but if I had more bottles, I bet it would be amazing in another few years. We’ll see how it develops over some days…

  • Opened for dinner tonight, and this is really in the zone. Earthy red fruit and menthol on the nose, good acidity and persistence on the palate. Just a little astringency on the finish - wish I had a full case of this stuff, as it feels like it will continue to drink well for at least another five years, and my remaining stash definitely won't last that long.

  • Opened and decanted an hour ahead of chicken marinara parmesan spaghetti. Dark, inky purple-crimson color. The floral nose takes an hour to reveal and ultimately brings fresh lavender, cherry blossoms, grape menthol, musty forest floor, and sweet pipe tobacco. The palate is medium, round, compact, yet accessible, bringing Bing cherries, chocolate raspberries, and deep blackberries mixed with dried saddle and high-toned orange peel notes into a juicy, tannic finish. This is nimble and has good fruit delineation at this stage, but will be best 2023-2033 after the tannins settle down. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 92.

  • Expressive nose- black fruit, warm spice, fried hamburger, chocolate, and balsam branches- so lots going on. Sweet ripe fruit in the front of the mouth- the wine fans out across the palate- medium bodied and so elegant- resolves with lavender and chocolate. This is such a beautiful wine.

  • Sweet and sour cherry on the palate, with a laser-focused nose of ripe cherry fruit. This is not as expansive on the palate as the ‘15 I just tried, but in the long run this might actually turn out to be the better wine. This will sound a little crazy given that I am talking about a Rosso, but if you only have one or two, I would continue to hold this. It’s beautiful today, but it also feels like it definitely has something in reserve as well.

  • Very easy to like - it's open from the get go, but develops more over an hour or two. Lots of ripe red fruit, but nothing overripe/sloppy. Good acidity, and a measured dose of tannin in the finish. Not the most complex wine right now, but it has the balance and substance to improve over several years. I do get a little wistful, when I think about what it used to cost. It's not a value proposition anymore, but it's still a very fine wine that is well worth buying.

  • Reductive at first and remains pretty tight, but the purity is so compelling. Fruit forms this wine's dense aromatic core: black plum, blackberry, wild blueberry, black cherry, more dark fruit compared to red fruit, but there are high notes of strawberry and red cherry. Licorice, lavender, violets, petrichor, mint, camphor and ethereal vanilla bean contribute to a wealth of non-fruit aromas. This is tense yet velvety on the palate. Gorgeous stuff. There's a lot going on, and there's a thickness and richness on the mid-palate, but in the end this is super fresh and graceful. At least a few years away from prime time, this is gonna be killer. Should age like a very fine Brunello.

  • I'm amazed how yummy this is. Tons of red fruit, dark fruit, maybe some plum and a rich earthiness on the palate. Fruity, yes, but earth, mushroom, spicy palate with a long med+ sweet finish. Acid and tannin - a bit of structure here. Totally ready to go now but probably better in a year or two. 92 is conservative.

  • Just delicious! The kind of wine where you are looking forward to your next sip just as soon as you've tasted the last one. I honestly can't think of a Tuscan wine from the 2015 & 2016 vintages that I haven't liked yet, and my simple advice if you like Sangiovese is to go heavy on your favorites.

Good persistence, decent acidity, very expansive on the palate. Highly recommended.

  • Checking out a couple recent acquisitions on a rainy day in the Delaware Valley. Red fruits and menthol on a somewhat reticent nose.

Sweet/ripe red fruit on the palate, nicely expansive for such a young wine. This goes down dangerously easy. Feels like it will be able to age effortlessly, but it's pretty deelish right now as well.
