  • Perfect spot right now. Still lots of fruit, but with savory secondary notes. Black raspberry, eucalyptus, anise, tapenade.

I have had a lot of Santa Barbara Cty Syrah and this one is near the top. The balance at this age shows a lot about the grapes and the winemaking. Well worth the $20 I paid on Winebid. Drink now.

  • This is an amazing wine especially given the age at the time of our drinking. Complex aromas of lavender, eucalyptus and spice box.

  • Still going strong. Plenty of lucious, dark fruit, smoke, and meaty character.

  • w bbq-ed sausages. 1 hr decant. great dark color, nice nose of berry fruit. on the palate good fruit, acidity and wood. great finish with continuing fruit elements. this will not get better but will last a few more yrs. maybe more elegance will show up but it doesnt need it. this is just a good wine.

  • Wow! Now that's what I mean by jammy, fruity, spicy, aromatic, super hot, high alcohol wine bomb. I love it. Get me more. Now.

  • Drank over two night. What a fantastic bottle of wine. Tons of dark fruit and spice coupled with great structure and a lingering finish. No heat and really well integrated tannins. Maybe not quite the nuance of other Cali rhones, but still a great wine now with terrific aging potential and a very attractive qpr.

  • Popped late at the end of the party and it's a big bottle of wine.....not what I needed then but others enjoyed...found it a bit austere the next day

  • blackberry and bubble gum on the nose. palate is kicking on day 2 -- deep blackberry fruit, bitter chocolate, and good length.

  • Typical hot climate aromas of plum, asphalt, black pepper and caramel. Fat and soft on the palate, leading to a tarry, very peppery finish which shows a little heat. Not bad but but lacks any unique character.

  • Sorry to see this as my last bottle. Grand example of the syrah

  • Meaty but pretty nose, blackberry and dried flowers. The mouth is packed with cassis and blackberry, with bloody iron and stony minerality. A nice, powerful finish with pepper and exotic spices. Beautiful wine. 91-92

  • Popped'n'poured. Black fruit, meat, a little grilled herb and lots of black pepper. Thick, smooth and meaty in the mouth. The finish shows a brighter, redder fruit profile and more black pepper but is rather short. A competent but very predictable Central Coast Syrah. A decant may have brought out more nuance.

  • Smooth, mouth coating, and luscious. Great juice.

  • Solid fruit, good nose, short finish. While good, did not have depth of other Syrah's I have had.

  • An inky, concentrated, very extracted California Syrah. A tad hot from the alcohol, but by no means overwhelming. Almost porty/late-harvesty, but not quite. This is a true garagiste wine with no subtleties or complexities, just dark, broody tannins with bold, bitter flavors of smoke and dark plums. If you have to have it with food, don't settle for anything other than hearty meat dishes or dark chocolate desserts. 88-89

  • -- tasted non-blind at Barrel 27's tasting room --

    NOSE: smoky, meaty, and spicy
TASTE: this wine has a dark garnet-magenta color of great depth, and features earthy flavors of leather, chalky minerals, and blackberries. 15.4% alc. is well-hidden; somewhat tannic; medium length finish.

  • Decanted 3hrs. The color on this seems like its dark red/purple when looking down on it, but when I sought its underside beneath a bright light bulb, behold I found bright bright crimson there - like a ruby gem; it's interesting how you can see all the minuscule particles floating around that way. After all this time open, it's smelling like a CdP, dark and "gamey." The dried hay mixed with country herbs is also there. Distinct fruits are less obvious on the nose - I'd say plum under a wager. Another point of interest, I noticed a clear difference in the fruitiness of the bouquet between the two glasses I poured from my decanter (same time); 1st out- darker, more herb-driven; 2nd out, brighter, more fruit-laden. I'd say by nose alone, I prefer the 2nd-glass. (Hmm., same assessment on the palate too, indicating an ideal decant time of ~1 hour). [Following based on 1st-glass] Very smooth flowing and rich; dark cherry flavors abound with spice, herb and ginger showing in the middle. Don't get the blueberry. The finish isn't particularly dry or tannic, nor peppery; rather quite seamless, carrying on with the spices and a heavy treatment of game-meat, like a Winter meal in the country. I kind of wish this had more backbone - it's there but not dominant - I think I'd score higher if it had. The real over-present characteristic of this wine is it's silkiness (she says, "like drinking satin"). Many will adore this; next time I might too with a shorter decant. 90+

2/2/09 Update-- Night #3 after storing 1/2 full bottle under vacuum; just popped (the rubber vacu-cork) and poured it. Super-pretty nose now with a delightful Febreze meets sweet-blueberries meets candied red-fruits; floral impressiveness in spades; the meats, herbs, and dark fruits aren't showing like before (after the 3hr decant). On the palate this is just massively delicious (just a little too much heat showing on the finish though). There is a dialog on my tongue between the sweet and silky bright-fruit/candy components in this wine and the more astringent, tar-like and bitter herbs and leather parts - the conversation is captivating. Because of this dichotomy, I can't just proclaim this tastes just like blueberry pop-tarts (for example) because it also tastes like what a lick to an herb-lined country asphalt road might bring to the buds on a windy late summer day, and that's after many years of road-kill filling in the cracks. Tannins on the tail-end are little more apparent at present. I'm thoroughly enjoying this on day3 (but its probably seen less air than the day1 note because of the vacuum-seal)... so much so that I'd have to rate this a 92 in current form. Next bottle I'll taste after a brief 30-min decant I think.

One more thought, and I apologize for the lengthiness here, but this is just so intriguing to me. I'm down to the last 1/4 of my glass fill, and I recollected a co-worker's mentioned a friend of his from the Old World having made great success with, what to me is a silly, wine product idea that I believe he called the "wine chapeu." (This is by no-means an endorsement - I've never seen one). This "Chapeu" is meant to rest on top of a wine glass, presumably in between drinks, and it's claimed to be made of a special material which concentrates the wine's aromas and flavors. (I think it's just plastic.) To me this seems counter-intuitive, as I generally tend to spin and aerate my wine in glass during the intervals between sips. Well anyway, I thought I'd try the "Chapeu" trick by holding my hand to cover the lid of the wine glass to test the "wine hat" theory. Wow, what an interesting result I found on this wine. It concentrated alright. After a minute or so of covering the wine glass lid, I removed my hand and immediately inhaled the aromas within. This was, in a word, intoxicating, quite more so than the wine itself! The scent was like a deluge of musky woman's perfume splashed across the female jugular and held within an inch of my face. It totally overwhelmed my olfactory senses. It was completely unexpected. And, it changed back to the original bouquet after 2-seconds hand-off and sniff-one. Now I must try this on other wines. This is like a whole new avenue of curiosity for me. I don't know what I'll find, but I highly recommend you try the hand chapeu trick on this Honcho.

  • Decanted 1 to 1.5 hours. Dark purple, with an intense nose of blue and black fruits. Really tasty with smoke, vanilla and spice tones. Hides its 15+% alcohol very well.

  • Man, this is good! Blackberry and blueberry fruit, cedar wood, smoke, vanilla, and baking spices featuring anise in particular. Some cocoa comes on nearing and through the finish. Very consistent with previous notes, it looks like. 91+

  • Bargains and Big Boys (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had herbs, pepper, tobacco, blackberry, and red berries. The palate was smooth, and had blackberry, tobacco, herbs, and pepper.

  • Well, I know it's only January 4th, but here is an early front-runner for best QPR of 2009. No decant; popped and poured to reveal a dark, inky color and a great nose of dark fruits, tar and vanilla. On the palate, this sports a lush mouthfeel, rich fruit, and a charcoal-like finish - a touch of bitterness and smoke that enhances, not overpowers. This is fabulous stuff, and could easily pass for $50 or more, which makes the $23 I paid for it an insanely good value.

  • Opened this wine and decanted for two hours before tasting so I don't know what it tasted like upon opening. However, it was delicous when we finally got to it. It had the beautiful dark stone fruit of american Syrahs but it din't have the unwelcome heat of mustiness. It also has a ever so slight sweetness and creaminess to it that was really enjoyable. It is a big wine so it held up nicely against a stuffed pork loin with cauliflour and and cheese side dish. Has a nice opening and a long finish. This wine can certainly go a few more years. Greta wine to end the night with.

  • Big cool climate Syrah with loads of fruit and white pepper on the nose and palate. Full finish and good acid and good tannins that will give this time to evolve in the bottle. I have a couple in the cellar and will look forward to enjoying these wines.

  • Big Syrah, but a really delicious wine. Dark purple color. Blue fruit jumps out of the glass on the nose, with a touch of pepper and meatiness. In the mouth, plush and emphasizing fruit all the way. It's got blue and black fruits in spades, just enough acidity to keep it from being flabby, and a long, creamy finish with some tannin. B+/A-

  • This is an interesting and exciting wine: blackberry and blueberry with a complex floral & gingerbread mix on the nose. In the mouth, it's juicy wildberry, with smoky cocoa notes, and that bitter chocolate lingers on the finish. This is a monster at the price: gorgeous, pure, and likely to unwind in beautiful ways in the future. This tastes like a young wine with a long life.

  • Nose of smoked meat, sweet blue fruits and florals. On the palate there is a nice hit of dark fruit, a little vanilla, fanning out into some cocoa on the mid-palate. This wine has a gorgeous mouthfeel, with some glycerin, but not over the top. The finish is lengthy and seemless. As ruddy said below, this wine is a huge QPR, drinking well above its price point.

  • Black inky color. On the nose black cherry, vibrant dark plum and tar. I drank this wine over a 2 hour period and it changed literally every 2 minutes(try it and you will see what I mean).
I tasted dark fruits, a rush of dark creamy chocolate, and a lingering raspberry dipped in chocolate finish that lasted for quite a while. The fruit structure was intense and ripe.
This wine will be appealing to many different people as it has old and new world characteristics. I could see people rating this even higher as there are so many aspects of this wine to enjoy
but there is just a little disjointedness that If I had a little more experience I would be able to put into words. Overall a wine to seek out and enjoy with or without food.
