  • I definitely overpaid for it, but delightful young Gevrey Chambertin. Drank over the course of several hours after 45 minute decant. Needed more time.

Initially hit with green, herbaceous stem-inclusion notes, from the roughly 60% whole cluster ferment I guess, but these very much integrated over the following hour.

Nose shows brambly raspberry, cherry with slight blueberry aromas and beautiful herbal notes of sage, violets, leafy tobacco, and wet moss. Over time, the underlying minerality began to become pronounce, with chalk, river stones and a hit of savory damp oak.

Palate was well structured with ripe but fairly mild tannin, and a wash of bright acidity.

Very nice and well-perfumed, but not incredible, especially for the price. Well, that’s the struggle with Burgundy I suppose.

  • 13,5% alcohol.

Youthful, translucent dark ruby color. Youthful, seductive nose of spicy Pinosity, ripe black raspberries, some primary red-fruited notes, a little bit of sappy herbal character, light toasty notes of sweet oak spice, a hint of exotic spices and a touch of juicy black cherry. The wine feels ripe, juicy and somewhat round on the palate with still surprisingly savory flavors of cranberries and wild strawberries, some lingonberry bitterness, a little bit of spicy Pinosity, light woody notes of savory oak spice, a hint of dried herbs and a touch of gravelly minerality. The overall feel is pretty balanced with the medium-to-moderately high acidity and firm, silky tannins. The finish is long, dry and quite spicy with savory flavors of strawberries, some peppered meat, a little bit crunchy cranberry, light woody notes of savory oak spice, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of earth.

Quite similar experience to the bottle I tasted a year ago, although it feels like the dank, herby aromatics had receded slightly into the background and the structure had softened a little bit as well. Nevertheless, this was still a nice and balanced effort for a 2018. Sure, you can taste the ripeness and the overall feel is rather dark-toned, but at least the wine doesn't suffer from excessive alcohol, too sweet fruit or soft alcohol - instead the wine comes across as firm, balanced and enjoyably dry and savory despite its rather ripe disposition. Can be drunk now but will keep for many more years. Good stuff, albeit perhaps slightly on the pricey side of things at 55€.

  • Tasted over several days. Starts out dry and firm, but - behold - the juice prevails along with berbs. Plenty of ripe, red fruit. Lovely wine, will live. 91+

  • Thought it would be worth giving this a go to see what it’s like “on the fruit”. Answer: it’s great. So attractive and fragrant, raspberry and a touch of blackcurrant. No need to wait! But I’m sure you can if you want.

  • 13,5% alcohol.

Youthful, moderately translucent ruby red color with subtly purple highlights. Quite fragrant and enjoyably open but also relatively dark-toned nose with aromas of ripe black cherries, some boysenberries, a little bit of sweet oak spice, light floral notes of violets and a savory hint of woody character. The wine feels dry, medium-bodied and quite textural on the palate with ripe yet not particularly sweet-toned flavors of brambly raspberries, crunchy redcurrants, some juicy black cherries, light savory notes of woody oak spice, a little bit of gravelly minerality and a floral hint of violets. The overall feel is enjoyably balanced and structured, thanks to the moderately high acidity and enjoyably firm and somewhat grippy medium tannins. The dry finish is quite long and subtly warm with layered flavors of redcurrants and brambly black raspberries, some gravelly minerality, light earthy notes, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness and a dank, subtly herbal hint of pot.

A dark-toned and somewhat brooding yet also enjoyably balanced 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin. Although one can taste the warm vintage in the darker-toned aromatics, the overall feel is very balanced and definitely not lacking in structure. The wine comes across as serious and enjoyably intense, showing nice sense of ripeness without noticeable sense of excess weight or sweetness to the fruit. Starting to drink nicely already now, but shows good potential for future development. Although most likely not for the long term, this will still keep for at least another 10 years or so. Perhaps a bit pricey for the quality at approx. 55€, but not excessively so.
