  • Not bad but seemed to be lacking proper acidity.

  • Obviously built for a quarter-century from now. Today, the inky Petit Verdot dominates the nose, then blackberry, black currant, and vanilla and graphite edges. On the palate, freshly crushed purple-to-black fruits exist as notions of berry flavor that just peek out from behind a blanket of acidity.

  • Tasted with Sassicaia from the same vintage at the best wine bar in Norway(Territoriet in Oslo). Deep ruby, almost black. Intense note og plums, blackberries, banilla and that typical intense eucalyptus tone. Full bodied attack, extremely fine grained tannins and very good acidity. The mid palate is sweet an fredh, nicely balanced the fine tannins. Long aftertaste with some beatiful eucalyptus tones. Too young now, but drinkd much better now than the Sassicaia. But in five years? The Sassicaia for me!

  • Tasted at the winery. This young fellow was bombastic--fun to try. A little out of control, young teenage years for him. Still showed very well in its youth. The tannins haven't settled down yet and it didn't feel totally integrated, but I'm sure this one is destined for greatness much like the 2016 we tasted it against. That one was screaming out "I could wait, but drink me now for all I care!" This wine said, I need to wait a little bit to reach prime time--and I agree. Thanks to the team at Monte Bello for having us.

  • Ridge Blind Tasting; 9/9/2023-9/10/2023: Ridge blind tasting!

So I set up a blind tasting of the 5 main reds from Ridge. The entry level Three Valleys, the Lytton Springs, the Geyserville, the Estate Cab and the legendary Monte Bello! I knew what I brought but I had everyone including me drink the wines blind and in no particular order. The order that ended up coming out was:
    1:Geyserville
    2:Monte Bello
    3:Estate Cab
    4:Three Valleys
    5:Lytton Springs.

Here are the notes for the Monte Bello: the strongest oak on the nose out of the 5, gives me a Rioja vibe at first with a lot of vanilla, cloves, chocolate and rich red berries. On the palate this thing is amazing. First time experiencing a Monte Bello but I knew this was the big one out of the 5. It does show that it need more bottle age, quite a bit actually but it still gives off one hell of a show. Strawberry and Blueberry on the palate. Some bread as well. This is gonna be an extraordinary wine some day, masterfully done! (My favorite of the tasting)

  • Tasted at Ridge. Blackberry, coconut and spicy dill on the nose. Rich, ripe and densely packed palate, still very tight and closed with deeply extracted fruit, supple yet firm texture and a long finish. Give this 10-15 years.

  • Nose: Very unique nose that was very enjoyable with spiced port and toasty bread crumbs. Palate: Mildly tart and spiced raspberries, there is definitely a mulled wine spiciness that is consistent on both the nose and palate, nice touch of oak; flavors, tannins, and acid are all nicely balanced.

  • Purchased a half bottle at SW Steakhouse in Vegas. Minimal decanting as I had dinner.

With that said it was still an absolutely beautiful and balanced wine. Dark red fruit, cedar, vanilla, and graphite. Medium+ body with fresh acidity, firm tannins, and an incredibly long finish. This wine kept me wanting more. I’ll be purchasing some bottles for the cellar after this as I look forward to see what this wine develops into with age.

  • Two-hour splash decant. Served side-by-side with the 2019 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve. I much preferred the Monte Bello for its bright fruit flavors and great balance as well as its lower alcohol (13.7% vs. 14.7%). The color and aromas are both amazing. I get a violet vibe, perhaps coming from the Merlot (9%) and Petit Verdot (8%). I now have tasted this wine on three separate occasions, as well as several other vintages over the years and in my opinion, the 2019 vintage is the best right out of the chute. It will be interesting to follow its development over time (if I can wait that long...). 98-100

  • Wonderful. The nose has earthiness to it, of mushroom almost. The palate is fresh and acidic, with very grippy tannins and very good concentration. Dark ruby. Awesome.

  • Judgement of Paris Tasting and Dinner (V. Mertz - Omaha, NE): Served blind alongside what was eventually revealed to be the 2018 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “SLV”. This was immediately recognizable as Monte Bello with a textbook nose of deftly balanced American oak and a decidedly brighter version of Cabernet Sauvignon. Distinctive and distinguished but woefully young. Unless you have multiples, please hang onto these until at least 2029. I am convinced that Monte Bello is truly an American treasure.

  • Infanticide. Please don't open this til 2028+. If you do, you will still enjoy but this wine is *begging* to rest in the bottle for a few more years at least, at which point the score will likely be much higher like 97-98.

  • This is still very young, of course. But it is quite rich, structured, and balanced all at the same time. Little sediment at this time. Decanting is necessary for full enjoyment. We somehow managed to save some for the next day, and it was even better.

  • Monte Bello, to me, is the perfect marriage of the best of Bordeaux and California. All of the complexity and finesse of France, combined with the gorgeous up front voluptuous fruit of California in a seamless package that is consistently first class. Tasted this vintage at the MB tasting room last summer, and purchased some 375’s for early drinking which was a great move! Could not resist opening one on my birthday. 3 hour decant. This is very young, but approachable with some air. Grippy but perfectly rounded tannins, bracing acidity, pencil lead, limestone, crushed black fruits. The American oak is present but not obtrusive. What a pleasure to drink. Another Ridge masterpiece.

  • Had it at their wine tasting

Was underwhelming and no better than estate merlot and cab franc we tried, which were just ok.

Light bodied, not much complexity. Apparently they decanted it. Still wondering if they poured the wrong wine based on others notes

  • Someone said it below, how can a producer possibly pull off making a wine that tastes this good young but also ages for decades? I bought a few and have no regrets opening this now. Very dark fruited with blackberry and raspberry, some tobacco Leaf. More savory than sweet. A hint of vanilla and dill, but nothing to fret over. Absolutely perfectly balanced at 13.7 abv. Not cheap but so much better than almost any napa unicorn people rave about.

  • Bright acidity and plenty of tannin to go a long time. Really balanced for a weighty wine. Not-quite-ripe plum, rosemary, crisp tomato, vanilla extract. Long finish. Give this time - it will reward another decade or two.

  • Outstanding and surprisingly accessible now. I found this wine to be more approachable than the 2018 I was able to try last year. This is hard not to like and reminds me of the 2013, which is an amazing wine! Should reward some patience. Complete balance. Fortunate to have been able to try - thank you to Ridge for doing tastings of these special wines.

  • Zinfandel appreciation… and some - Ridge Vineyards tasting: just wow! i had never tasted a wine this young and as rich and complex as this one; great now, likely to be even greater with time.

a masterclass in winemaking from the Ridge team: only 13.7% AbV; 82% Cab / 9% Merlot/ 8% Petit Verdot/ 1% Cab Franc; seventeen months in new barrels (95% American, 5% French).

glorious ruby colour with opacity in the glass. the nose is a heady delight where black currants, dark plums, and cassis mingle with herbal tones of rosemary, mint, and thyme; with woody, earthy and smoky whiffs; and even soft wisps of rose and lavender. it is not shy in the mouth. to take a sip is to unleash a flood of rich, ripe, fresh, and savoury fruit with more overtones than i can easily describe. the tannins are firm yet very polished; and the acidity, while lifting never veers astringent. impossibly long finish that swings from sweet chocolate to earthy fruit and places between.

as good as it is now, one just knows this will get even better…

i'd call this *the* wine to put away for anniversaries of 2019 events (births, weddings, whatever)

  • Decanted 3-4 hours and was open for business. Beautiful fruit, a little mint, impeccable balance and grace. I'm sure it will be even better in a few years but definitely no harm in cracking one now to check in.

  • Napa 2023: the quieter version; 2/6/2023-2/11/2023 (Napa/Sonoma California): This was drinking particularly well. It’s dark cherry fruits and some spice notes and pretty in style and it’s very young and primary but still it’s got the structure and the style to be beautiful.

  • Classic California Cabernet/Bordeaux Blend.

Tasted at Ridge Monte Bello Estate. Deep ruby with purple flecks and a ton of extract.

Nose is delicious. Sweet tobacco, some brown spice, red (plum, raspberry) and black fruits (plum, blackberry). A slight coconut and vanilla hint. A subtle mint note as well. Ripe, sweet, yet not overly jammy or excessive.

Tannins are medium plus at least but fine and surprisingly accessible now. Medium plus acidity. Long finish. Well balanced.

    Buying more for the cellar.

  • Tasted after 3 hours in the decanter. Beautiful perfume on the nose--tart red fruit, spice and vanilla. Tastes of red fruit like cherry and cranberry. Plenty of spice including clove and red licorice as well as some dill and vanilla. Medium + acidity, medium + silky tannins. Long finish. This is fairly well- integrated despite the young age. Both powerful and elegant. 94 now and possible higher with age. Enjoyed with the family home for Christmas.

  • Ridge Monte Bello with Leon (Ridge Vineyards, Santa Cruz, CA): Lovely herbaceous and blackcurrant nose but on the palate. Corked. Similar to the Estate but has more depth of savoriness. Can’t speak as to the fruit.

  • Stunner. Even at this young age. Hour-plus decant. Earth and spice and dark fruit, all dancing together harmoniously. Even then, still closed. Can’t wait for my other bottles.

  • Quick Visit to Ridge Lytton Springs (Healdsburg, California): Ruby. Fragrant, subtle nose. Excellent, slightly tart red fruit, much less herbal than the Estate Cabernet. Wonderful flowing feel, fine acidity, refined tannins, outstanding inner mouth perfume and length. Classy wine.

  • Absolutely delightful, almost ready to drink now. Wonderful spice. 2022 Fall Release tasting, double decanted for six hours

  • Strong notes of coconut and dill on the nose, maybe the most obvious I can remember in a newly released MB. Love the somewhat reserved dark, brooding palate, beautifully balanced, medium/fine tannins, excellent acidity. The dill/coconut aspect is much less apparent on the palate than the nose, and with age I expect this to transform into a classic Monte Bello. A wine that sits closer to Bordeaux than Napa on the spectrum that runs between the two.

  • Like others I tried this out of curiosity to get a window into future development and expecting it to not show best at this young age. On day 1 it showed much better than expected, really bursting with flavor and the tannins / oak not overpowering the fruit. On day 2 the fruit faded and the tannins / structure were more present. Anyways I’ll give it a 94 for day 1 showing with upside from here.

  • From 1/2 bottle. I know it’s young but wanted to try. Color is deep / opaque ruby/garnet. On the nose: Plum, cassis, bit of vanilla, espresso and some herbs. On the palate: Plum, cassis and a hint of dark chocolate. Very nice acidity. The mouthfeel is so elegant. This wine is clearly to young but it’s already fabulous. Picture yourself in Paris at a fine restaurant and this wine would fit right in. Off the charts good. I have a case of halves and 1/2 case of magnums. I think the magnums should be left 10+ years.

  • Dusty early nose. Sour cherry. Needs 10 years. Lots of acid. Long finish. Solid tannins.

  • This is a lovely wine already and clearly has the stuffing to improve with cellar time. It was dark fruits, ball-bearing-smooth tannins and frame of nicely toasted new oak. I could drink this all day. Hold if you only have one or drink one for research’s sake if you are flush with multiple bottles.

  • I really don’t know how they make a wine this beautiful right now that will continue to age and improve for decades.
