Served alongside Palladius 2018, this was definitely the more refined and styled wine of the two. Quite lean, lemon peel, flint, yellow apple, some notes of cream and white blossom, white peach. Lovely!

BYOB dinner and then some; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Avalon, Amsterdam): [Tasted blind] Tasted alongside with the Palladius 2018. This was lean and elegant, definitely not the old style thick and buttery Meursault. Flint, firework, herbs, almond, white flowers, lemon, apples. Medium+ acidity, long finish. 93+

Was rather shy on first pour. It opened up to show rich orchard fruit aromas and flavours along with some almond butter and white flowers. It had good flesh and underlying minerality and a finish that was long and spicy.

There was a time when I thought 2018 was a bit off-vintage for white burgundy, but I couldn't be more wrong, because all 2018s are on a very good path.
Straight after opening, there was plenty of peach, nectarine, flowers, herbs and cream/butter on the nose - delicate perfume, but the wine itself was very closed and shy.
The real magic happened after 90-120m in decanter. Wine became more serious and robust as Charmes usually is. The nose was dominated by lemon and grapefruit peel, all wrapped in a very fresh, wet stone minerality that can't be found anywhere else than Cote dOr. On the palate, the wine is very young and lively with strong but perfectly integrated acidity, which will keep the wine for another decade or more. It is already perfectly drinkable, but the wine just started to kick. No sign of even minor oxidation after 5 years on the bottle.
The only part of the experience when you realize, that 2018 is a complicated vintage, is a bit shorter (in terms of Lafon) but very satisfying finish.
As always with the Lafon, you get the Meursault in its purest possible form.
Anyway let the wine breathe, without air you just wasting your money and potential of the outstanding bottle.
Lucky me still have 5 bottles left, so I can follow the progress every 1-2 years.

From an off-vintage of white burgundy, but it won with time in the glass.
At first pour it was a little bit tight and mineral with citrus and sour apple. But it slowly opened up to an array of yellow fruit, lime. Well concentrated and with good length and a soft buttery feel on the palate.
Really well made wine from a great producer. Even though it might still be a little young.

Fathers' Gathering (RPM Italian, Washington D.C.): Expressive nose displaying ripe but succulent yellow fruit, apple, peach, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of sweet yellow fruit, rich and sweet, but also showing a very good balance and precision, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish. This clearly reflects the ripe fruit of the vintage. Drinking well but will show better in three to five years from now when the ripe fruit expression lessens.

67PM by the glass. Here we go. High end Chard in the glass. Complex aromas of minerals, pop corn, citrus. Excellent palate. Not plump or heavy at all as the 2018 may suggest. Feels mich more like a 2014 or 2017. Wonderful. Hope this ages without premox.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Walk around tasting. Rich, ripe, dense and chewy. Peach and apple with some baked apple hints, this has a sweet concentration that easily captures your attention. I think this will reward a year or three in the cellar, but best to enjoy on the younger side, probably the decade from 2024.

Lovely now, Meyer lemon, poached pear, a little custard. Fullish and rich, but showing enough zip to reflect the vintage - but not succumb to it.
