  • Tasted Blind

Pale ruby with a purple highlight on the rim
Medium (+) nose of violets, black plum, red cherries, cranberries, clove, liquorice, leather, soil
Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, medium (+) intensity and finish. Medium (+) tannin on the gums
Very good quality wine. Better examples would have longer finish and perhaps more intensity.

Suitable for ageing as already showing tertiary flavors and has sufficient acidity to keep fresh whilst developing further

guess: Cru Beaujolais as juicy, lots of red fruit, fairly tame tannins

    Mistakes:
Would expect a little more steminess and fine grained medium tannins with Beaujolais crus. Was talked into looking for signs of carbonic maceration which I rarely find in the Cru Beaujolais these days. Convinced myself that there was potting soil where there wasn't. It was fruit driven (so new world).

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry jam and raspberry. The body is light/medium. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

  • Nose is bright, ripe fruit, vanilla, traces of fireworks smoke.

Palate is about medium in body, with dusty red fruit initially. Upon closer inspection, I'd say it's ripe cherry, plump raspberry, cinnamon. Drinks easily on the PnP. But, a bit too ripe for my tastes tonight.

  • Dark purple-tinged ruby with high optical density and medium specular reflectivity (just a bit of diffuse reflection coming across). Aromas have nice intensity, with an array of dark fruits (plum, blueberry) and light anise over earthy herbal forest floor. Some delicate florals rise above and swirl around the fruit and earth. Nice nose, if somewhat off-variety (I might have guessed this nose to indicate a blended red with perhaps Syrah and Merlot in it).

On the palate, medium to light in body with crisp acidity and very present and firm intensity of tannins that are fine-grained enough to provide a rounded texture. Nice density here, not chewy, but broad and even, yielding plenty of structure for flavour support. Overall, juicy and easy-going. Flavours of plum and tart mixed berries (black cherry and blueberries) on the attack, with pretty big intensity. Fruit forward for sure, but still balanced by other interesting earthy and smoky herbal character. The midpalate stays strong, with more juicy berries and some spices coming on, providing for a savoury and herbal character to blend with some pipe tobacco and leather notes to come across. Finishes with perhaps a twist of brighter but ripe red berries and warm leather notes. The finish does linger a good bit, but at a low very intensity after the initial flourish. Pretty decent intensity, and a good bit of interesting depth here.

This is a really big Pinot Noir here. Dark and brooding, but not in an overripe or overwrought type of way. More of an honest appeal is going on here, showing a well made wine. That said, it's a bit confusing as a Pinot Noir, I would never have picked that variety blind. But, when I get over how dark, big, and otherwise confounding this wine is, I must say I like it. I tend to like red-fruited and more elegant PN, but I do enjoy the darker styling, if it's elegant. This one here, seems just too big to use elegant as a descriptor. In the end, this is pretty much a comfort type of wine. Delicious, big, bold, dark, and yet with a very easy-drinking appeal. I do think age may be helpful with this one, and at the least, there is no hurry- it has plenty of material to work with!

Tough to assign a score here, as without context this wine can easily mislead. So along with 89, I'll say this would have a range for me: 87-91
