From a 375 ml bottle; Medium dark amber/burnished oak color; ripe attack with notes of macerated/stewed cherry and plum, bay leaf, dusty herbs de provence, light tobacco, tar, ash; rich creamy mouthfeel, soft tannins, balanced acidity with a little tangy and dry finish. In really good shape esp. from 375, however, just little bit gooey and sappy and a bit sweet. But just right with a spicy pepperoni pizza with bell pepper

This wine was drinking fabulously. Smooth, balanced, cherry, spice, long smokey finish. What's not to like, especially for the reasonable prices this goes off at. At 15 years no browning, musty, wet cardboard, dried oak, just sweet balanced fruit. VERY NICE.
None of the early reviews were strong so clearly a wine that needs a little time to come in to its own. My last bottle :(

Served to a large dinner crowd. I not a fan of Trampranillo/Rioja and not a fan of 2003, so I did not expect much from this wine. I turned out to be completely wrong. Medium garnet with brick rim. Expressive and complex nose of dried fruit, sandal wood, cedar, very pleasant and complex, not a hint of oxidation. Very soft and tame on the palate but not tired, enough acidity to keep it fresh, no alcoholic heat. A really nice, well aged wined. Very popular on the table.

2h decant. Very mature, already at the end of the drinking window. That's probably why this vintage was sold here at the store last week for half price...
Still very enjoyable: oak, dark berries, a bit of rubber. Medium to long finish. Drink up!

This was a great example of Marques de Riscal Reserva. It had a ruby/garnet colour with a very aromatic nose with leather, cherries / red fruit, quite smoky and wooded. On the palate an excelent wine with a very a profile with great acidity in a very delineated structure which takes you to a long finish. You can feel a little of dust tannins that shows very integrated with the fruit

Fragrant, oaky nose. Medium garnet color. A bit light and one-dimensional on the palate, with hints of oak, licorice and berries. Good Rioja character, but lacks force and assertiveness. Finishes well. Believe this is near the end of its drinking window; may hold another year or two. Nothing spectacular here, but a well-made and useful wine. Could do better, could do worse.

Rather fine nose. Taste: quite good fruit, rather sappy, with a hint of chocolate. More acidity than with my last note (26-09-2010). The beginning of a decline of this wine, or is it my taste? I really enjoyed this wine with Chicken and Andouille Sausage Jambalaya. It complimented the spicy sausage perfectly. Terrific deep red color, with a nose that tells of the great fruit to follow, but decieves by suggesting hot alcohol.(14% abv) Drinkng great right now. Very, very long finish. The tannins linger on the palate for minutes. They are ever present, but mellow tannins. Cherry flavors, dusty cedar, cigar box, and sage. Well integrated. Yum.

Dead Grape Society - Spanish Rojo (Luxembourg): Brick pale color in the glass. Comes across with a distinctive prune and soy sauce smell. This evolved some into a more pleasant port smell but the soy sauce smell lingered. Drinking with flavors of chocolate, port and sweet dark dried fruit. Again quite strong prune flavor but underneath showing a very deep and intriguing wine. Seemed to be quite aged/past its prime.

I am not an experienced Rioja drinker, and so my reaction needs to be considered within that context. I let it breathe for a while (30-45 minutes), and for the first part of the bottle, the wine was pretty flavorful (nice Old World palate). Toward the end, it got a little dry, but not too tight.

Perfectly fully formed red-brick rim, fading to dark ruby. Raisin and stewed prune nose, very ripe fruit anyway... Super fine, very gentle tannins, wood still lingers with just a hint of edge. Lingering, but gentle acid. Smoky and slightly cigar box. Nicely balanced, if tending towards a touch much cedar. But really nice.

A typical fruit-bomb, but I must concede that it is slightly more restrained and elegant than the majority of fruit bombs, particularly if you aerate it a bit so that the vanilla aromas from new oak can blow off a bit and let the secondary aromas of berries, raisins and leather come forward. Drink now and in the next 4 years.

A very pleasant rioja. It is reasonably priced and always delightful. This is a nicely balanced wine, good fruit, good tanin and mild oak. It has a slight feeling of effervesence or sprightlyness. For the price this wine is outstanding

minerally, had a strong nose like that of an older wine, actually tasted like it had turned just a little bit, reminded me of the 88 barbaresco i had at barollo for my 30th birthday, the premature age amde it slighlty disappointed actually for a 2003.

Strong nose of olives and slight fecal odors. Reminds me of right bank Bordeaux. Flavors very heavy. Port-like. Alcoholic. Not altogether unpeasant, but a little heavy for my style. Served with Mancheco Spanish cheese, a textbook recommendation, but I thought a the wine was a little heavy for the cheese. But I am not a good judge of red wine and cheese combinations, because of my slight anaphylactic reactions to these combinations (burning of tongue). I need to stick to combinations of red meat and big reds. I also have little experience with Spanish wines.

Not pleased with the results of 2003. Opened two bottles tonight. One was flat out bad. One was borderline. Not sure what the issue is. Stored the same as all others and I rarely have issues with 6 year old wines. Corks in both seem very dry, though. Had 6 of these. Almost afraid to open the rest. Very clearly the effects of air.

This proved to be a wee bit of a disappointment. The nose was greeted with leather and tobacco and dried herbs and sour fruit with an undertone of chocolate. The eye saw a rich deep garnet. The notes on the tongue, however, were a bit of a letdown. The harmony that was to the nose did not reach its promise on the tongue. Finally it had a medium finish. This is still a nice wine, but like a smart but lazy middle schooler, it does not come close to reaching its full potential.

Not too impressed, we had less expensive wine show better. Noses hint of pepper,I thought there was a hint of green onion(?) kinda in a good way. Palate was "thin", disappointing but not terrible. The finish had a cab franc style that lingered. Mid palate was no where to be found. Slightly too hot, label says 14%, I say 14 1/2 ++. On a good note, I loved the bottle presentation with the gold netting and stylish labels.

WOW...what a surprise at a great price point. The nose is a little hot even after a three hour decant but the bowl permeates fresh strawberries and some saddle. The palate delivers more surprises with solid leather, strawberry, a little forest floor and big big tannins. The fruit delivers and then the tannins take over into a log finish. Nice balance with a couple of layers. Take your time and get into this one....a must buy.

Beautiful wine, luscious flavor and very nice nose. Night 1 was brown sugar and butter with plenty of dark fruit. It held up well on night 2 as well, with a nose of butterscotch candies with an undercurrant of petrol (just a hint). Butterscotch/butter rum/butter notes on the front of the palate, lots of fine tannins, peppery herbaceousness (thyme?) on the finish.

Full ruby color. Enticing nose of sweet black cherry and rich plum surrounded by brown sugar, tea leaves, and a gentle waft of pipe smoke. Beautiful. Juicy cherry and blackberry on the palate with strains of tobacco, black tea, and other soft herbal nuances (sage?). A touch of coffee on the finish. Maybe a tiny bit thin. Fine flinty tannins. Good length. Perfectly balanced acidity. Awesome food wine. Brilliant QPR.

This shows a dense red color with an average viscosity. Its nose provides hints of oak, vanilla, chocolate, tobacco, leather and dark red berries. On the palate, its not so hi alcohol content allows anyone to easily notice its well structured elements producing an elegant fruit forward taste at first, followed by a quick combination of vanilla-chocolate-coffee sensation, with a predominant but elegant oaky finish that could last close to 30 seconds. Definitely a pairing wine, specially roast meat including chicken, accompany with rice.

Good BBQ wine. Medium-bodied, but intense with lovely ripe fruit. It does a good imitation of a great wine, but is overly oaked and doesn't have the acidity of my favorite Riojas to hold up to the food. Still, pretty good wine for the price.

Good fruit, and fairly tart from generous acid. Feels fresh, and I think this deserves a few more years to soften and become more balanced. Decanting for a few hours helped. This is not one of those addictive, vanilla-rich modern Riojas, but not bad. At 24 hours flavors integrate somewhat. But, I notice a strong inky flavor; not bad, but it makes me wonder what a few years of aging would do.

Love the nose on the Marques de Riscals. Earthy and leathery. Very good food wine. Nice concentration with soft but chewey tannins and good acidity. Nice balance. Delicous and slightly sweet juice but never too sweet (in balance). I've tried much more expensive Rioja's but alot are overextracted and sweet or not that complex in smell or taste. I like the Rhone characteristics of this. I like the mouthfeel and taste as well. More interesting than the Muga.
After an hour decant this is delicous. This is more ripe than I realized. I heard this was a hot year and believe it. Nice slightly chewey tannins and decent acidity mask the ripeness at first. I'm not so sure this isn't as good as the previous couple of vintages. Should age well. I think this is an excellent Value at $16/bottle and would highly recommend. 90+Pts

Better than I remember, and far better than the 2002. Had this one with barbequed chicken and turkey, a good match. Nice Rijoa nose of choclate and red fruits. Soft on the palate with low acidity and tannins. A crowd pleaser that doesn't offer a lot of complexity.

Red Rioja (preferably reserve) Marques de Riscal Reserva 2003 Appearance: clear, ruby, medium intensity, white watery meniscus, tears fast to form and fall Nose: clean, medium + intensity, youthful, aroma of plums, violet, bramble, wild strawberries Palte: dry, acid is medium plus, tannin is medium plus (nature stalky and rough), body is medium plus, alcohol is high, length is medium plus, flavor intensity is medium plus, flavors include caramel, burnt marshmallow, carmelized banana, cabbage, tin, roasted plum Quality: average commercial quality. Some intrigue with unusual, complex flavors of caramelized fruit, earth, and varied texture yet this is not a “complex” wine in the style of a Grand Cru or wine of exceptional quality as it seems to be ripe fruit aged in heavy oak for a significant period to achieve a flavor profile of deep tannins and ripe fruit. Will hold three years but will not benefit from further aging.

I must've purchased 40+ bottles of this wine (including the 2002--2003 is better). A dependable favorite. After coming back to from a two-month hiatus, I tasted a very different wine. Before, the only imperfection I’d felt was a slight diesel-y heat. But this particular bottle had a cork that smelled of “After Eight” minty chocolate, and a nose in the bottle which evolved into slightly rancid butter later on in the glass (even after an hour’s decanting). The butter tone became overwhelming. Once it began to leave a bit, it tasted at times like toffee, then the characteristic fruit tone of both Marqués de Riscal Riojas (Reserva and Gran Reserva)--that is difficult to grasp, that keeps me coming back--presented itself: something at once plum and dark purple berry. Something perverse about this wine, but it’s still great. At parties, this wine always seems to please—even if it has more imperfections than I remembered. Or perhaps just bottle n° 766174? Decanting 1hr helped. Cinnamon. Graciano and Mazuelo less than 10%, along with Tempranillo.

Dark cranberry red in color, with medium intensity. Subtle mineral and spice notes dusting a rich blanket of black cherries, black raspberries and bitter chocolate. Deep red inky cherry color to this wine. The nose is wonderful with graphite and cherry notes the first to hit followed by raspberry notes, and woody, chocolate/cinnamon component. Very Nice wine that in the mouth is full of fine and smooth tannins with a nicely balanced acidity. Chocolate, and cherry and the predominant flavors with a slight edge of black pepper at the end. 4/5

Better fruit (younger) than the 2002. I like the nose on the 2002 better but this should develope as time goes by. Excellent reliable Rioja at a good price point. This seems like a go-to Spanish wine. If I was throwing a party and having Tapas this would be the first wine I'd grab to go with them. Might move up a point or so with some more bottle age. 89-90Pts

Juicy cherry and blackberry on the palate with strains of tobacco, black tea, and other soft herbal nuances (sage?). A touch of coffee on the finish. Maybe a tiny bit thin. Fine flinty tannins.

90+Pts
