From a magnum. Even at this age, it required decanting to get some air.... mostly to blow off the funk. More vegetal at this stage...dark fruits, prune, plum. The fruit has faded and the tastes are mosly secondary. Still tanic and with sufficient acid.

Still very close to my note from 2008; "Typical Chianti nose with a significant amount of oak. ... structure bigger than the body". Unfortunately the oak shows no signs of fading and the fruit has not exactly improved from 4 more years of cellaring. If you're into oak-soup this is probably enjoyable but I say Pass.

The 05 seems to have moved up a notch in the last 6 months - a more complex nose the main clue, with a classy, smoky and moreish palate. I think this will continue to improve over the next 2-5 years. Score of 90/100 reflects the excellent value <£13 retail.

Dark core with a lightish rim. Nose of raspberry and a slightly animal note on opening that soon blew off. Later the nose was more crisp red fruit and a slight hint of black olive. In the mouth this wine showed nice balance with cherry and kirsch and that classic Chianti acidity and a nice medium length finish that makes you want another sip. A good mid priced Chianti, an excellent food wine.

This has smoothed out beautifully. A touch of sulfur on the nose initially, which quickly blew off leaving earth and a little funk. Acids have receded but fruit has remained, making this very drinkable now on its own. Lots of blackberry and other dark fruits. Can't imagine this any better; enjoy.

Once again, cloying sweetness and intrusive oak spoil what probably would have been a good wine. Enough typicity to be Tuscan, so probably justifies its price at £10, but I wouldn't pay more.

This has evolved a lot since I first had it. I noticed earth, leather and smoke along with nice red fruit. I would say cherry and plum that hints at that Italian spiciness but is mild and refined. I also noticed a little orange rind, some spice and gaminess. It has a dry leathery finish. I may have preferred it young. This wine is so well made, so balanced and refined (always was), and smoothed out so much and become more expressive. It is a good thing, but I liked it when it was a little raw. It is now pretty velvety. Also hints of milk chocolate and a savory quality. Wow!

Now this is Tuscany! We had this after a decent 2005 Verrazzano Chianti Classico and this wine really showed its stuff. I find it much easier to judge wines when comparing them. This wine had a much better nose of cherry fruit and earth. The fruit on the palate was much more intense and the finish lingered much longer. A really good Chianti that tasted like a $40 Brunello.

This one is really hitting its stride now. Beginning to develop tertiary aromas but still very youthful. Very typical aromas of cherry and wet rock. Precise acidity and quite tannic but it's beautifully balanced and a lot more accesible than it was 6 months ago. I do not understand the previous poster's comment on oak usage as I find this one very light on the oak, especially compared to its younger siblings 2006 & 2007 that are way oakier at this stage. Drink now and for the next 3-5 years.

This is what would be characterized as a nice wine. If I were to go to, say, Central Park with a group of friends to hear a Met performance, this would be a really good choice; it is quite approachable. The nose finds mint and chocolate and orchard fruits. The eye sees a deep rich, brick red. The tongue finds ripe plum and green vegetables. The finish is not there. The wine lacks the complexity and structure and mouth feel to be in the next level.

Heavy toast on the rather cumbersome oak mars an otherwise inviting nose of sour cherry, mocha and chocolate. Very evolved palate and ripe, plump tannins, but lacks acidity and corresponding grip making the finish rather unsatisfying. Oak intrudes throughout, but still a nice wine. I suspect this will not last too much longer as older vintages will testify to. Drink over 2 years. Investors should skip this one and proceed to the astounding 2006.

And it's root, root, root for the home team...Ok, I know I'm losing it, but I think I'm coming down with something so I decided to open the "purest" bottle of wine I own, biodynamically sound down to those roots, hoping perhaps for a medicinal benefit above and beyond known cardiac, anti-stress, anti-oxidant properties. I won't know until tomorrow if the strategy worked, but in the meantime, I'm going to guess that today is a stem or leaf day for my Querciabella, because while it displayed admirable sour cherry and cocoa flavors, it was also packed with anise, herbs and other stemmy notes, which would recede on a fruit day, for example. THIS CAN ALL BE PROVEN! Ok, now you really know I've lost it, but wait, this wine really responds to its calendar-based destiny and will taste differently depending on what day you open it. That's what they told me when I was there, so I believe them, and will endeavor to report on all of the above when I drink the rest tomorrow. But it's 7:45 now and time to go to sleep...sleep that knits the raveled sleeve of care.
I came back and finished the bottle tonight. Initially, it retained the identical qualities as last night, but toward the very end it began to express more pure fruit and less stem/leafy qualities. Now whether this was due to a lunar/cosmic shift or just more time in the open air I can't say because I was unable to verify either yesterday or today's biodynamic state. I just know i like it, and for future reference I did feel a little better when I woke up this morning.

Great nose, tipically CHianti with nice smoothness. However after a nice start in the mouth, strange and green pepper and acidity in the middle, which kills the drinking experience. I am disappointed. Tasted the same wine 1 year ago and there was too much wood still. This bottle does not satisfy me. Maybe bottle storage condition affected it, but what it tasted is not up to this wine's reputation.

Fantastic bottle of wine to drink with steak. Tannic, but well contained. Reddish brick brown color, very reminiscent of older brunellos. I'm planning on stocking up on this wine, half the price of the entry level brunellos and every bit as wonderful to drink.

(375ml.) E.

Popped and poured... although it got even better over a 2 hour period. I would decant this for about 1 hour next time. A wonderful chianti. Strong nose of dark fruit and terrior... very pinot-like. The taste is smooth with just enough acid and tannins. Went extremely well with pizza, although I would drink this wine by itself. A medium long finish completed this excellent wine.

Smoky, savory and spicy, along with some cherry, plum and orange rind. Acidic kick is present but not too hard. A very nice wine that reminds me of Oregon Pinot Noir and Rhone Syrah such as Crozes-Hermitage and St. Joseph. I would love to try this again in 3 years.

Reavaliar. 89-90pts. E.

Nose: Floral with red delicious apple skin pine apple and cedar box.
Palate: Medium bodied with well balanced acidity and a smooth texture. Somewhat out of balance chewy tannins. Front end of cherry cranberry and unripened plum with a hollow mid palate and a tannic finish reminiscent of pineapple rind.

Glory be to God for dappled things, for skies of couple color as a brinded cow. For rose moles all in stipple upon trout that swim, fresh firecoal chestnut falls, finches wings... That's what I remember of Pied Beauty and I apologize to anyone and anything if I got it wrong. Having been to Querciabella last year, I need to beg forgiveness if drinking the wines is akin to a religious experience for me. There is a purity to the '05 Chianti Classico that simply transcends the quotidian. It may be hard to understand unless you have immersed yourself in biodynamics or stood above the winery gazing down at the heart-shaped vineyard of Camartina. Or maybe I'm just drunk. I'm not saying this is the greatest wine I've ever tasted, but it may be the most honest. Ripe cherries in the nose, lovely balance, maybe a bit fat from the ripeness of the '05 vintage, but the only element out of place is a streak of new oak that I believe will integrate with more time. This is what I think Chianti would taste like if the wine could make itself. I'm still searching for the '04 which should be even better if it's possible to find a bottle in New Jersey.

(SAQ 26$ : 2008-2015)

Well, another 2005 first... this time Chianti. I'm am really fond of the 2004 version, so I was exited to try this out. Clear dark red with that typical purple glow for young wines. The nose just oozes of cherry, plum and coffee. The mouth is dense, yet fresh and crisp with same elements as nose tastewise, but also hints of typical tuscan herbs and a good minerality. Long and pleasing, but a bit too young at the moment. I would expect this to become really great in a 1-2 years and to eclipse the 2004, which drinks terrifically at the moment. Compared to the 2004 this is a bit denser and darker and drinks more like a Brunello than a Chianti. I do not know if its related to the vintage because as I understand some Sangiovese previously used for two of the estates top wines (Palafreno and Camartina) has been added, so that would account for the differences. Amazing QPR.

Not as impressive as previous bottles, this came across somewhat one-dimensional, dull and chunky.

Enjoyable with Italian meatloaf and pasta with a tangy red sauce. Decant for 1-2 hours and it opens up. Beautiful nose of dark fruit and minerals with a touch of oak. Medium-full bodied with a nice, moderately long finish

Fantastic bottle of wine to drink with steak. Tannic, but well contained. Reddish brick brown color, very reminiscent of older brunellos. I'm planning on stocking up on this wine, half the price of the entry level brunellos and every bit as wonderful to drink.

(375ml.) E.

Has developed more since the last tasting. This is coming right along, with everything you would look for in a Chianti. Another year should peak it, but drinking well now.

This bottle was not clearly flawed but there was a strange dull quality to it that I didn't experience with previous bottles. Lacking some acidity and vibrance. Might be slightly cooked.

Thin, lighter than most Chianti. Didn't really enjoy this wine...

Typica Chianti nose with a significant amount of oak. Elegant, very drinkable. Well integrated tannins. Minerals, cherries galore. Attack is a bit weak, and the structure bigger than the body. Long, warm aftertaste.

Reavaliar. 89-90pts.

My note concur with the previous one. Excellent stuff, already drinking nicely (from magnum!) but with plenty of potential. Solid buy, this improved (Sangiovese usually from the SuperTuscan blends now in this wine) Chianti Classico from Querciabella.

Purpura escuro. Boa estrutura e final longo. Excelente c/b. Excelente.

Outstanding Chianti normale.
Concentrated and rich with loads of cherrystone flavors and hints of menthol.
Still rough at the edges so if you want to consume now I suggest early decanting.
Best chianti 2005 I have tasted so far.

Opaque, blackcurrant colour with a bit of age.
Vegetal development, then fruit comes through.
Very claret like, gentle tannins, good acidity, smooth, attractive now but will keep 5 - 10 years, good length.

Another clear 90 pointer from wonderfull Italia. Have improved over the past 6 month, where it last was a bit closed, it is now very aproachable. Opened up lovely fruit and herbs in the glass as our evening dinner went on. Super wine and super QPR.
