Samples from Bill #4: Raspberry, smoky, meaty aromas. Palate is quite fruit forward although there is quite a bit of that smoky character as well. Medium length. Found it lacking some excitement, it's alright but feels a tad hollow.

Pretty straight forward Mencia full of ripe red fruits and earth. Strawberry, cherry, raspberry, garden soil, crushed rock. Medium intensity throughout. Compared to a lot of Mencia I've had this one is a bit middling.

The wine shows black cherry-coloured with intense violet hues, a lovely mature wine which is strange as its only 4 yrs old. The bouquet displays ripe red fruits, minerals and blue flowers. Fine and exquisite on the palate as it is fleshy, fragrant, and full-bodied. Quite a delicious enjoyable wine

A very interesting Bierzo Mencia. Deep ruby in colour. Lots of earthy cherries, other red fruits and a slight herbal note on the powerful, lovely nose. There's pure, very concentrated flavours of cherry, cranberry and red plum on the medium to full bodied palate, and serious tannins on the finish. A little disjointed right now, I think, as the tannins will need time to subside, but an intriguing and powerful Mencia that is very good QPR (A-).

Great value for this Spanish bottle enjoyed with friends headed to walk Camino. Lots of aroma when cork opens and more mouth and tannin than expected at this price. A little fresh; could’ve held longer.

Opens with an evocative nose of menthol, sandalwood, juniper, menthol and seared meat, which braces the same elements on the equally evocative palate. Mouth-filling fruit of dark black cherry, blueberry, and damson/plums in counterpoint to the plush, long tannins, sweet oak vanillin, hints of cocoanut and barrique barrel spice. Finishes long and plush. Excellent with food, especially robust fare that benefits from an equally robust foil to set it off. Perfect pairing with pan-seared, Cajun spice-rubbed pork chops. Excellent QPR.

Fruit Day - explosive nose of ripe red fruit (can smell it almost a metre from the glass). There’s also savoury herbs, spice and crushed rock on the nose. On the palate the flavours are bright red fruit with a lovely savoury/licorice root element on the back of the palate and on the finish. Pretty tasty and definitely ready to drink now.

Bottle 3 (of 6), this developed nicely over three days. Day 1 was all sour red cherry & spice - aniseed & clove. Then day 2 brought a clear mushroom character - which surprised me a little, but by day 3 it was gone & back to a pure fruit character, red plum, red cherry, spiced raspberry coulis. Fascinating wine.

The deep purple colour belies a fresh red fruit, and savoury palate, combining raspberry, ripe strawberry, cherry with wet earth, leather, and Smokey cedar wood. Seems more mature than it actually is; perhaps, but that’s no bad thing!!!

Drinking very well with modest aging potential to smooth out tannins. PTQ the wine would score higher.

Red fruit (cherry), herbal element, earth, slight forest, great acidity. Lingering finish. Enjoyable. Finish a little on the short side.
