  • 2018 Résonance Pinot Noir Les Côteaux

Compelling example of Willamette Pinot Noir made using true Burgundian method and approach. A little focus is rewarded with a lot of finesse and refined complexity. Not as much of a quaffer as some of its contemporaries, but makes an admirable pairing to roast fowl (we went with quail and it was glorious). Decanted for an hour, which I highly suggest, as the additional airing opens up the secondary and tertiary characteristics. Drinking very nicely now, but could easily develop even more nuance over another five years.

  • 2005 Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Although I am a fan of Ch SHL in general, this bottle was not as vibrant as I expected. Decanted for an hour before serving with braised Lamb Shanks (definitely a happy pairing), but it took another half an hour to start showing quintessential secondary and tertiary aged Bordeaux characteristics. Although very enjoyable, it never really opened up to the extent I was anticipating; however, his may well be just due to bottle variation (wish I had more of this vintage so that I could further explore this theory).

  • NV Jacques Lorent Champagne Grande Réserve

A promising slightly leesy nose opens with a symphony of complex aromas including lemon zest, olive oil, Emmental cheese, nutmeg, almond, jasmine, and kiwi. The palate continues to impress, with a zingy citrus backbone braced by more kiwi, fresh pineapple, a bit of smoke, some chalk and flint, hazelnut, and capers. There is a lot going on with this Champer, with an inherent complexity that is somewhat reticent at first, but which benefits from a little focus. It all wraps up with crisp lemon zest on the crescendo and some not unpleasant astringency on the steely finish. (Very good QPR, which is reflected in review score.)
