Ripe black plum aromas and flavors with liqueur notes and a clearly sweet finish. Not very powerful, but reasonably well balanced. A fun enough modern-styled wine if served with the right food (burger, BBQ). Side note... what a ridiculously heavy bottle.

Im on the same boat with the previous commenter. Just had it last night but didnt like it at all - found it unbalanced and one dimensional with way too much (new toasted?) oak. All reviews talk positively about it tho so idk if it’s just my style preference but going to try out some other primitivos i have to get a better objective feel.

First of all the bottle is ridiculously heavy with a very deep punt. Upon initial pour blackberry, tobacco, black pepper, vanilla and some green steminess. Body, acidity and tannins all seem in balance. My only complaint is that it tastes young (acrid and grapey). If this matures gracefully it could be a QPR bonanza at 92 pts. but I have very little experience with Zins.

I was originally skeptical, given this was included in the prestigious 2021 Italy GR3 TRE BICCHIERI AWARD listing; Primitivo, like it’s US counterpart, Zinfandel can be unbalanced and jammy in hot vintages, and 2017 in Southern Italy was a very hot and dry year. Much to my surprise this shows ripe, slightly jammy red fruits along with enough underlying tannin and acidity to provide balance. This was decanted and enjoyed with smoked brisket, pork ribs and jalapeño sausage. The wine definitely complemented the spice in the food and the sweetness of the BBQ sauce. Medium finish. Needs food to show itself. Wonderful QPR at <$15 USD.

Consumed over a couple days. Importer Oliver McCrum has said he has not imported primitivo from Puglia because too many examples are "stewed." (He does have one on his radar, and if it shows up near you, buy it. I've tasted it ahead of his importation.) This wine, bought from Garagiste, is a good example of that. Too hot, out of balance, all fruit, no structure. To be fair, Zin/Primitivo isn't usually built for the long haul, but 6 years is not a long time for a red wine, and I've had 100% Zins that lasted twice that. Great presentation--hefty and distinctive bottle, tasteful but distinctive label, but this is, even at $16, a pretty disappointing wine from Rimmerman.

Rather deep in color. With a nose of dark fruit / plums and hints of citrus. Lighter than expected on the the tongue with blackberry forward. Moderate to light tannins. Alcohol level makes the wine feel unbalanced.

I believe the guys are totally spot on with their notes as the wine is ultra ripe, jammy with notes of various smoked black berries, plums and prunes as well as cocoa and chocolate. These hedonistic flavors are further accentuated by tiny quantities of residual sugar. The wine is complex but dominated by smoked black jammy aromas, however there is enough lift and structure from the acids and tannins to keep it all in balance. An interesting example of southern winemaking.

Rich, intense, jammy. Powerful and complex Primitivo. Notes of prunes, plum, cherry, chocolate. A bit earthy, scents of tobacco, cocoa. Full body, soft tannins, medium acidity, long finish. Wine for special occasions.

Candy-sweet red fruit with a bit of a green streak that helps but ultimately fails to redeem this overripe Primitivo. OK as a pop-and-pour pizza wine and the price is right at $14, but nothing special about this wine.

Went amazingly well with a slow braised lamb ragu. Decanting for an hour mellowed the tannins and brought out some super fun secondary herbal notes. Good strong acidity, medium body. Overall, a delight to drink.

Big bold delicious Zin, just a touch ripe. Drink now/soon because when this falls apart it will be a hot mess. Also a ridiculously heavy bottle, the glass so thick you can't tell how much wine is left after each pour. Solid QPR at $14.

funky wet earth and deep ripe dark fruits on open. wine on the sweet side with medium to low acid, low/quite soft tannin. Very straight forward profile. I am often looking for more structure, minerality, and florality in my wine but somehow this is working. Very light hints of raisin, clove, stem, and leather. Just enough acidity to cut the sweetness and bring what little earthy and aromatic tones are present up to the surface. I opened this to drink with various cheeses and it is working great.

Inky black-purple, slight sign of garnet aging at the rim despite being very young and primary.
Nose had cigar tobacco, mulled wine spices and pepper.
Palette was very sweet up front giving way to savory notes of mushroom and smooth light tobacco. Bit of cherry but not overly fruity. Smooth light tannins, good acidity, fairly long sour green apple notes at finish.

OK this one flirts with controversy. A colleague of mine from Puglia recommended it to me. PnP - nose of blue fruit, vanilla, oak spice. On the palette this was full bodied, fruity and sweetish. Long finish with a touch of alcoholic burn. Definitely complex but equally extracted and amped. This is no subtle wine. A lot of friends of mine liked it, but not quite for me

Top level primitivo in a very affordable price. Beautiful bright dark red with shades of purple. Medium to full body. Low but we'll felt acidity. Mildly aromatic, nice mixture of oak and fruits. Rich and addicting on the palate - plum, blackberries, blueberries, vanilla, tobacco, cinnamon, anise and more. Wonderful wine.

This wine is powerful and flexes its muscles immediately with an expansive nose of candied fruit (Haribo), sweet spice, tobacco and leather. It also has an initial hint of dust or ash that I often find in Zinfandel. (Thank you Kustjagr for pointing out Primitivo is actually the same grape as Zinfandel) After this intro, you are bracing yourself for a bombastic and alcoholic taste. However, while it is seriously full-bodied, it is remarkably balanced and refined. Low to medium acidity, off-dry with medium but integrated tannins, high in alcohol but that does not stand out. Good finish. Overall, this type of wine is not my personal favorite but I can only be impressed by the combination of power and balance this wine has to offer. Fair value for money given its quality (20 GBP in bond)
This is a HUGE wine, the biggest I've had by a large margin. Absolutely no restraint in the making of this. Makes your archetypal California Zinfandel look small. WAY too much for me personally.
Day 1 impression:
Nose is raspberry jam, smoke, candied red fruit, and a touch of leather. Palate is absolutely bombastic and full bodied. Lots of deep, red candied fruits, what feels like residual sugar, lively acid, and smooth tannins. Finish has candied currants, the spiced orange zest of an old fashioned, and sweet smoke. The finish lasts forever.
This wine is way out of balance. There's WAY too much fruit without the support from tannin or oak. The fruit is definitively more red than the black fruits of your typical California Zinfandel, but it is way overpowering.
Will cork it and see if the wine settles down overnight.
Day 2: The fruit has settled down a little bit, but not so significantly. If anything, the residual sugar is more noticeable now.
Not a fan. Way out of balance, too much residual sugar, not much depth beyond the bombastic fruit. Tempted to pick up one more and leave in the cellar for 10 years to see what happens to the fruit, but probably won't.
Edit: this was served to me blind 1-2 months later and I instantly knew what it was. No other wine would be this bombastic and out of balance. Even tried to pair with a lamb chop that I just happened to have in front of me, and the wine was still so overpowering.

The nose is super intense, in fact when I had just barely opened the bottle, it came at me with something like rubber boat or flipppers. Nose of very ripe cherry, red and black forest berries and pine tree. Plum, blackberry and some tannins on the palate. This would be really good if I hadn't already overdone it with this product generally.

This is truly a Primitivo to savour. Like it should be. For some reason, the same grape mistakenly called Zinfandel never really works in the US. This one does. The fruit is certainly there. In between blue and red berries. Some tannins, but not much. Same with acidicity. But that finish, long and lingering. Even if you do not like US Zinfandels, you may well still like this. Stunning 4.5 score at Vivino being rare at this price point.
