  • Aerated with a Vinturi and decanted for one hour. Nose of black cherry, black raspberry, loamy earth, spice and a hint of anise. Well integrated black cherry, black raspberry, loamy earth and spice on the palate. Long, layered finish. Medium bodied. Served with mushroom, asparagus risotto.

  • PnP. Medium dark red. Intense nose of plum and berries; smells like RRV Pinot not Sonoma Coast. Palate is very ripe fruit driven and enjoyable, but lacks the complexity this vineyard is capable of. Seems like it was picked very ripe which is somewhat TRB's style. Fun to drink but not that interesting.

  • FMIII hit it on the head for me with this quote, "I typically love Summa and I do like some age on the vineyard but I simply think that the 2019 its just a bit rich and too much for me." Frank, glad to see that it wasn't just me. Unfortunately, this was the first of four.

  • Really pretty juice. Strawberries, flowers, cola and balsamwood - a Sonoma Coast beauty - I plan on drinking my remaining bottles in the nearer term to enjoy its freshness - soft acids and tannins yield a fruitbomb that has no edges that argue for cellar time in order to round off. Perfect now

  • I’m very much enjoying the 19 RM Summa. One of the few domestic lists I’m staying on and for good reason, TRB, Will and the team continue to put out excellent expressions of Sonoma Coast pinot with a house signature. The orange rind and angostura bitters are present on the PNP and this wine bears much similarity to the 2014 which was a real stunner in bottle. This will be similarly great in time. I am also reminded of the house style with this wine. Some might criticize with it being formulaic, but the Reynaud wines are sort of similar. In any case I appreciate these.

  • Fully open nose of dark cherry, earth, floral berries and a hint of cola but overall very attractive. Palate is mid weight, with a long saturated cherry mouthful on a long nicely balanced finish. Could use a little more acid to bring the finish into relief but this is a very good showing. Lighter than some Sonoma Coast Pinots, and that’s a plus - fine winemaking. Good now likely to be as good or even better in a few years.

  • Soft, round, supple cherry fruit. Not a lot of structure or character but easy drinking.

  • Full flavor and aroma. Slightly young but not complaining . Great balance with a nice( really nice) crisp acidic finish.

  • Decanted 2 hours prior and drank over two hours. Very aromatic when opened and decanted. On the palate crushed red fruits, cherry blossoms, wood spices along with a sublime burnt wood/oak finish. The finish was smooth but think wine needs more time to come together. Last glass was the best so i would say a longer decant and slow ox in glass helps at this time.

  • Powerful funky nose. Plums and blackberries. Some vanilla and baking spices, too. A lot of earthy flavors. Definitely a quality wine, but too dense and sweet for me. Moderate finish with some heat from the highish alcohol.

Bottom line: This is not the style of Pinot Noir I gravitate towards, but it might be right up your alley. I distinctly recall the 2018 iteration being a lighter wine with more red fruit. I really liked that wine and bought 6 of the 2019 as a result.

  • I love the richness here, perhaps because I drink Napa cabs most days. Nice balance of rich red fruits, acidity, minerality, perfume of flowers and a hint of spice great length in the middle. Just yum.

  • Two hour decant and drank over the next two hours. Smooth and balanced with fresh cherry nose and red berry fruits in the middle. A slight cinnamon backdrop. Medium middle and finish with mild tannins. A very pleasant bottle that is open at this time. I would have preferred a little more individual character and challenge, but overall acceptable.

  • Agree with Frank’s note. This is really nice but seemingly denser than over versions (though the Old Vines pulls more richness and depth). Plenty of baking spice (cinnamon, anise…) on the aromatics and up front. Palate is mostly juicy/extracted red fruit with hints of smoke and funky earth. Slight heat on the edges. Drank over two nights and slightly better on the second. Likely needs time.

  • First of three. I was curious to try this given the early notes shown below. For context, I opened this yesterday and sipped through about 1/2 of the bottle over about 4 hours. I put the remainder back into the fridge overnight, doing a new glass of it this afternoon for my note. It's pretty cold right now but I'm tasting the wine across several minutes as it warms up. Yesterday, I found the wine kinda big, with a cinnamon stick, anise and smoky kind of thing as the main aromatics of the wine. The fruit was red berry jam, which seemed consistent with the 14.6% alcohol. (As a side note, I don't recall RM putting the alc % numbers in the newsletter...if you guys are reading my note here, I am voting for that disclosure for the January 2022 release, please). Even when tamped down by the chill, I can still taste the jammy, hard candy aspect to this vintage of Summa. It also has a pinot funk note, what I called smoky yesterday but it's more of the funk thing. And I like Buzz's use of the words 'blood orange', which is a great descriptor. As the wine sheds some of the chill, man, an unctuous quality appears. It's the jammy thing but deeper, denser than something overtly sweet. With more air, the fruit becomes more delineated. Still get the blood orange note, but also strawberry and also raspberry. And with the less chilled temp, the cinnamon stick flavor from yesterday comes back into the finish, adding a real spiciness to the wine. As I taste through the last ounce or so, at what I think is the ideal temp, there is an added cola bean note in the finish. Overalll, this vintage of Summa seems like a throwback to the early years, when the wine was bigger, denser, richer, which I don't care for in Pinot Noir. And Buzz in his note talks about aging the wine, to allow improvement, but I am skeptical. I typically love Summa and I do like some age on the vineyard but I simply think that the 2019 its just a bit rich and too much for me.

  • Jump into this like a barrel sample...youthful crunch, tart pucker, little heat...air brings it all into some harmony...bright and perky wild red berry fruits...raspberry, cherry, red plum...little more heat and edge than the 18 had 5 mos ago...yet still classic RM exotic seduction and intoxicating sandalwood spices. Vein of sour blood orange citrus makes it SO refreshing...creams up nicely with a little oak barrel vanilla cola...pretty dried roses and potpourri florals...that heat bite detracts a little...can't call it seamlessness like the 18...but I think it will silk out with some age. Sure bet this will be amazing in 5-10...but SO damn hard not to drink them in their youth! Try to hold off on at least one bottle till then... as that's when the REAL magic happens! ++pts

  • Decanted and consumed over two hours. Typical Summa. Nice fruit, but not much acid and seems a little dull.

  • The 2019 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard opens in the glass with scents of plums, rhubarb and raspberries, complemented by hints of warm spice, blood orange and peony that are still a touch muted after the wine's recent bottling. Medium-bodied, bright and precise, with lively acids and satiny tannins, it's beautifully defined and is built to really flesh out with a little bottle age.
