The best Chilean Cab I can remember having after about two to three hours of air. Needed time to integrate and put on some weight. Was an absolutely delight and showed the Alto Maipo region well.

Really young and primary and, yet, giving up wonderful flavors and balance. Not even remotely integrated yet, not all working together but I had to try this wine. Bodes incredibly well for the future. Showing off what a Chilean cab can accomplish.

Suckling Wines of the World: tasted both days and really liked as I have become increasingly impressed with the premium red Cabernet based wines from Chile and this is amongst the best. Rich, dense fruit but good balance and lots to enjoy in this wine.

Far from being an expert on matters Concha Y Toro, I normally associate the name with quality but inexpensive wines. So Don Melchor comes as an abrupt departure from that genre and does it deliver. Refined, layered, smooth, and concentrated. Delicious. I thought the $86 quoted at the table seemed high - until I checked on Wine-Searcher...

Tasted at Don Melchor vertical dinner with Enrique Tirado. Very expressive and explosive nose of black fruits and quince. Concentrated with layers and layers to reveal themselves. Very drinkable now (especially with some red meat) but also has the potential to be evolve for 1-2 decades. Nice effort.

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. It was aged for 15 months in French oak.
Decanted about two hours. Dark fruit, licorice, tobacco, dark chocolate, leather. Taste was almost silky. I enjoyed this but didn't think it was worth the price at this time.

Retail $140, 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. One of the icons in Chilean winemaking, I was honored to open this bottle with several other journalists and winemaker Enrique Tirado on a Zoom call this afternoon. Enrique took us on a brief history of the wine, a virtual tour of the vineyard, and an informative look into how he blends the wines from 151 different plots to come up with what goes into the bottle. This wine, perhaps needless to say for a cuvée that collectors hold onto for decades, is exquisite. Shortly after opening, this wine was singing with rich, dark fruit, a touch of mocha, a slight but lovely herbal aspect (sage), and an earthy even spicy aspect on the nose. The palate is rich without being overpowering or unctuous with intense fruit, a balancing and zingy tartness, loads of earth, that mocha aspect from the nose, and soft, silky tannins that, while not fully integrated, suggest a lengthy and healthy future ahead of this wine. Remarkable. And whoa.
Medium+ nose with notes of fresh black fruits, mineral, black currant, graphite. Medium+ acidity and high tannin. Tannin is polish and long finish. Still youthful.

Very young & primary, with lots of fruit, but delicious. Tannins mild.
Aerated for two hours in a decanter. Give this a decade to mature.

Young but already delicious. Mid grain tannins are abundant and enjoyable, the flavor profile speaks classic Don Melchor. Great wine.
