Tasted this at the Rioja - Spain's Overlooked Classic Masterclass by Tan Ying Hsien at Prowine Singapore 2024.
Dark brick red in colour with a creamy, vanilla nose backed by blackcurrants. The fresh butter on the palate, coupled with oak, cherries and fresh fruits explains why this is such a highly regarded wine.
Ends off with some metallic notes, spices with clear influences from the use of US oak.

Decanted for 4 hours. Sweet red fruits on the nose with some vanilla notes
Sweet fruit flavors on the palate. Primarily red fruit dominate. Some tannins as well but very soft with mouth watering acidity This is going great with my ground beef enchiladas.

revisiting this one after only three months… most things have not changed: "deep garnet colour with opaque core and medium-plus body. lovely nose where fresh raspberries and blackberries meld with rose petals, spice, smokiness, soil, and tobacco. a bit tight at the moment, the fresh acidity and tannic backbone are prominent on entry. but slowly, macerated fruit unfolds in layers laced with spice, earthy, floral and savoury accents. moderately long finish that veers into the balsamic."
this time i found a more prevalent sweet coconut-vanilla note in the nose as well as the mouth… (but not to the point of dominating or upsetting the balance of the wine), but also a somewhat more ethereal feel to the experience. same rating, in balance.

I’m unsure how long the bottle was allowed air Before I took a dive. Crazy night. What can I say. Somewhat tannic intiallly but as it settles on your palate it softens. Long lasting dark fruits an red fruits an the tannins are currently overpowering the acidity I’m getting dark fruits on the nose an some vanilla It’s a fruit forward wine but no where near overly fruity. I’m going to say great job an I can’t wait to see the evolution of this wine in this vintage.

never really got into this wine...with the right food pairing, maybe even garlic shrimp or seafood, the sweetness of the wine and vanilla works well....but it just didn't have enough tannin, earth, and bitterness to make me fall in love...dark blackberry, blueberry, plum, raisin, cherry....on the feminine refined side.

Beautiful and concentrated bouquet with dark berries and well dosed oak. On the palate very juicy, full bodied, great depth and still very youthful. A wine with a great promise for the future. Already a great beauty. 95+

Brickish brown colour with cedar, pine, vanilla oak, bramble and red currant nose. Pure red currant and cedar palate. A full and brambley mouthful. Very enjoyable with perhaps a slight over oak.

this has been a disappointing wine relative to the reviews and scores. very beautiful and elegant wine structurally, super feminine, thin, delicate and well-balanced...flavor profile is too sweet for me with too much vanilla amidst dark cherry and blueberry...dislike the oak as well. I find Napa wines better flavor-wise, despite my penchant for old world. Paired with the right foods, it works well

Drank with a 4 hour decant. Cedar, incense, black cherry, walnut, potting soil, porcini powder, and blood. As expected, the oak shows through a fair amount - especially on the nose and front end. This wine has beautiful structural balance. I believe it's best days are still ahead. However, I found it perfectly enjoyable at this stage. No regrets opening now.

definitely better the second time, living up to the scores more so this time. A little too much vanilla and oak initially, but it fades to become better--dark cherry, anise, herbal.....super refined, exquisite, feminine with a delicate structure....

Upon PnP the nose is heavy Potpourri, Cedar, Cranberry, Raspberry, Blackberry, Black Cherry, Vanilla.
Palate brings over a lot from the noise. Spicy bramble fruits, cinnamon, dried cranberry and cherry, dark chocolate truffle. Getting some earthy smokey patchouli/tobacco thing as well. Balsalmic on the finish.
High Acidity, Rich, slighty chewy, Velvet.

I found this disappointing to drink. A little too sweet at the finish with too much vanilla. Super elegant feminine wine. I enjoyed the Protos Gran Reserva 2015 more.

My first glimpse to this vintage which was the first ever awarded ‘Seleccion Especial’. A classic Tempranillo based blend with 10% of Graciano, farmed from 60+ year old vines, aged for 4 years in used US oak. Medium+ intensity rich aroma of coconut, strawberries, incense, balsamic, black chocolate, cherries, tobacco, jammy hints. Medium+ body, well structured and balanced full of incense and spice infused red berry flavours, cedar hints, high well integrated acidity, medium+ tannins.

Truly a wonder to drink. Decanted and over three hours became a perfect wine. Opened up to give plump and lush fruits, with cedar and cigar box. Started drinking and it was great becoming magnificent over the evening with food. It’s a 9/10 and something very special indeed. Will be buying many more bottles

14.5% AbV; 90% Tempranillo/ 10% Graciano from cooler, higher-elevation vineyards; aged for some forty-eight months in used American oak.

Incredible and beautiful. Smooth dark fine tanins, dusty and dry, but very approachable and friendly. Elegant, Dark currants, hints of chocolate and tobacco, earthy notes. Very smooth and very deep. Medium acidity with a long lingering elegant finish.
Much more concentrated, deeper, and flavorful than the $30 Rioja I'm comparing it to (2016 C.V.N.E. Rioja Viña Real Reserva).
EDIT (12/16/24 Fri): Tasting along the 2015 Vina Arana and 2016 Vina Ardanza. This is definitely my favorite of the bunch with greater concentration and a greater delicate etherealness and depth than the Vina Arana but....the Vina Arana is very close.
In fact, on the nose, they're very very close. While I will treasure the 904, but for regular enjoyment, I will be very happy with the Vina Arana. What an amazing bargain both are.
And let's not forget the Vina Ardanza if you'd like a brighter, more tart version of the Vina Arana. A very very pleasant surprise. Very high on my list of wines I'm impressed by and great value for the quality.

Decanted for three hours. Medium to dark ruby colour. Red and blue fruit, red cherry, black raspberry, dill, dark chocolate, mocha, espresso, dark tobacco, spicecake and vanilla, with good acidity, round, well-integrated tannin, and very good length. Quite fresh, and quite elegant, with great persistence. The 2015 is not as complex and dense as the 2009 or 2010, and not as smooth as the 2011, but fresher, and it shows its class once paired with food. Great with slow-roasted goose. Should be interesting to compare the four vintages again in five years or so.
Drank in comparison with the 2011. Both had red cherries, vanilla, coconut and cloves. The 2015 was a bit more acidic and will benefit from quite a bit of aging. It was also a bit more rich with oak influence. This has the makings of an amazing wine and could gain a point or two in 5-10+ years.

TWS Rioja tasting (Chelsea Old Town Hall): Concentrated, tarry and slightly oaky right now - lovely balance and a low-key presentation with a savoury edge. Smooth and kind tannins - this isn't big or extravert but it has a latent depth and power. Quite compelling.

On the nose, chalk, tobacco, cherry vanilla, firewood, dark fruit and cassis. Very modern. In the mouth, medium to full-bodied, chewy tannins and opulent ripe fruit. Solid structure with lengthy finish, but somewhat straightforward, oaky, hyper-modern and lacking complexity.
Not displaying the qualities of the region, but rather overly intervening winemaking.
88 points on the night, may settle down and develop complexity in a few years. Drink from 2027...

good red color showing a bit of brick at the rim (appropriate for this wine at this age), nose of primary black fruits and blue stones with a broad topnote of camphor, on the palate splendid- ripe and pure cherry core, camphor, black thorn, roasted plums, fine length with an elegant finish, very pretty at the moment and worth visiting, but there are hints of many savory delights yet to come, it would not surprise me if this drinks well all of its long life.

Not sure what to say about this other than that this is classic old-style Rioja, still some baby fat putting it on the young side but showing the payoff of its elevage and some evolution with those leathery accents and the polished, resolved structure. No oak sticks out. Satisfying and drinkable and you just have to wait for it to become a bit less monolithic.
