A bright light red in the glass. Fairly simple on the nose with cherry and raspberry. Light to medium in body. Medium acidity. Low to medium in tannin. Slightly drying but well balanced with the acidity. Simple notes on the palate with a short finish. Acidity is sticking with me bringing out more subtle red fruit on the palate. Light, delicious and vibrant. Really enjoyed though nothing stands out as “amazing”.

A basic, unfussy, authentic (i.e. unconfected) red wine that’s unencumbered by oak, excessive ripeness, or spoofulation. But why buy this, instead of a Loire gamay, or a mencia from Ribera Sacra, or a fer servadou from SW France? The answer for me is that I like them all, as each has their charm. I like the tart red fruits here (currant, Rainier cherry, that sort of thing) and the hint of salinity that’s important in the really good wines from this volcanic region. Mild tannins, not a lot of depth, but a good amount of pleasure.

PnP. Cherry, raspberry, rose and other floral notes, pepper, and the underlying minerality. Bright fruit, medium+ acidity, medium body, integrated, but drying, tannins in the finish. Only my second vintage of this wine, but I love this every time I taste. I'd love to taste this after a few years of bottle age, but this is delicious right now.

A very pretty transparent light cherry color. It had me on the pour, beautifully fragrant strawberry, black raspberry and pomegranate fruit on the nose backed by a peppery, volcanic minerality. Barely medium bodied (13.5%), lovely balance across the palate yielding to well integrated peppery tannins on the dark stony finish, with plenty of backing acidity. Outstanding with a simple red sauce pasta with turkey meatballs (sorry for the sacrilege.) Potential to deepen a bit with a few more years in bottle. Shall I compare thee to a Santenay?

Fresh and lively Etna rosso made from a blend of 85% Nerello Mascalese and 15% Nerello Cappuccio. Before blending 20% of the wine is aged in 2nd use FR oak for 10 months. Pale and lush red colour. Medium intensity aroma of raspberries, char, cherries, floral hints. Medium light body, lively and energetic entry flavoured with red fruits and mineral notes, classical vibrant juicy acidity concludes with zesty finish along quite absent tannins.

Really enjoyed this; don't believe I've had these varietals before. Great lightweight wine, interesting on its own or good as an aperitif and many dishes. Nose has caramel, strawberry, raspberry, hibiscus and stone. On the palate it is thin and dry, with bright acid, blueberries, raspberries. Very fresh and easy to drink at only 13% abv.
"With the elegance of Pinot Noir and the explosive exuberance of Zinfandel, Nerello Mascalese is delightfully easy to drink."

The nose shows immediate notes of smoked brisket, tobacco, and cherry. The wine is rather light and nimble on the palate, showing strawberry, cherry, and plum, with a bit of smokiness carrying through on the finish. An acidic backbone and subtle tannins keeps the wine refreshing.

PnP til sjakk før pizza. Forsiktig lett krydret lukt. Forsiktig smak også. Gjennomsiktig lys frukt, fersk, hint av gjær.. åpner opp med parfymerte toner etter litt tid i glasset. Lett og litt kjedelig

Extremely light and translucent garnet. Tart red fruit is immediate out of the glass, but also well defined white pepper and cured meat. High, zippy acidity combines with sneaky tannins late on the finish. Palate is true to the nose, presenting a very chuggable berry-focused palate. Outstanding QPR; a little more heft and depth and this becomes a very special bottle. Going to seek out more from this producer.

The Benanti winery was founded in 1988 by Giuseppe Benanti, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur from Catania who decided to turn his family’s long standing traditional passion into an ambitious and challenging new venture. Wine had been produced by the family for several generations, mostly for private consumption, until Giuseppe finally decided to establish the winery with the aim of preserving the unique terroir of Etna’s volcanic slopes, whilst cherishing and developing the indigenous Etnean varieties Appellation Etna D.O.C. Rosso Grape variety Nerello Mascalese (c.80-85%), the noble indigenous red grape variety of Mount Etna; Nerello Cappuccio (c.15- 20%), a variety grown on the volcano for centuries Production area Selection of grapes from vineyards located on the northern, south-eastern and south-western slopes of Mount Etna Altitude 450 to 900 m a.s.l. / c.1,500 to c.2,950 ft a.s.l. Clean typical nose. Like the few other entry level Etna 19s I find red fruit and a certain roundness maybe from the youth. Medoum-light bodied. Same red berries and nectarine on the palate framed by fine soft tannins and acidity. Balanced and drinking now but will likely integrate further in a year. Trails off with a medium finish.

From all five of the vineyards. Salty minerality, rouch of rsoemary, has the sea salt kinda thing going on the palate. Jim and Scott note more pepper on the palate. The opposite of terre nere.

Nose has red cherry, red plums, a little oak spice and a hint of violets. Palate has firm but smooth tannins with some lovely lively red fruits, great acidity and a gentle depth, some spiced oak, vanilla and cinnamon. The finish is lovely and long. Still young and this will be a cracker in a few few years time when those firm tannins soften. Well worth seeking out to try and #giveanewwineago #burgundynick a steal £21.99 @harrogatewines 89 points
