Wonderful matured, this Riesling Privat from Nigl is quite positively evolved and the initial ageing window from Peter Moser was correct. The bouquet mixes some vineyard peaches and honey, but also some chalkiness. I would guess (thanks to the screw cap), it should stay on this level for another 5-10 years.

Some blinds and non-blinds (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. I had been thoroughly convinced this was an Austrian Grüner Veltliner from the nose on this -- there was so much green it was almost spicy (like a jalapeño). This had a few of the fruit aromas I could associate with riesling, such as white peach, but those seemed a little more peripheral than that greenness. The waxiness on the back end helped push me further towards Austria.

Golden/yellow in colour. Quite evolved on the nose - notes of petrol, botryris, herbs, slightly floral notes, yellow stone fruit, hints of dried fruit. Quite layered and complex. On the palate powerful, grippy and dense. Very nice mouthfeel, good acidity and length. Showing very well, but no rush. 91-93

Highly unbalanced, very alcoholic, smoky, botrytis bomb, quite bitter finish ... sorry absolutely not my prefered style. It won't improve i am afraid ...

Private Tasting (@Private location): Tasted blind. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, developing, medium intense nose that first pointed me to Alsace or Wachau: ripe fruit, some honey, lilacs and herbs. Interesting and nice. Dry with quite an amount of residual sugar. Full bodied, and quite hot (14% abv). Unfortunately the medium- acidity cannot balance the sweetness and the high alcohol level. On the palate ripe stone fruit, mineral notes but very few tension and not very complex. No need to hurry, but I doubt that this wine will improve with more time, so drink up in the next few years.

Labor Day Wines (Gaja, Dunn, La Grand Dame, and more...) (Portland, ME): Color: Pale yellow Smell: Ripe tropical fruits Taste: Ripe star fruit, cherimoya, and a hint of durian...wild on the palate. Overall: Outstanding. However, this is just such a wild wine that I'm not sure I can enjoy it. Really rich, weighty, and almost unctious. Medium acidity, Med++ fruit, and medium-full body. This would be great with spicy, rich dishes.

A half-way deccent white. Fresh fruit. Intoxicating nose. Light acidity.
$53 at Astor: A multi-faceted jewel of a wine, with an endless procession of flavor nuances, all silken, soft, and approachable. Notes of white pepper and celery seed come forth on the finish, along with a lasting minerality.

This is really just a massive wine; I can't think of another better way to portray it. Huge glycerol mouthfeel, heavily extracted--not to the point of bitterness, but to the point of near medicinal levels of ethanol. 14% alc/vol. There is sooooo much going on in this wine that I feel (yes, IMHO) this wine loses what is paramount in Riesling: freshness. This wine delivers what GrueVe ought to deliver, which is that fat, herbal and boldly melon-y profile. Riesling, on the other hand, ought to give you a sense of refreshing vibrancy, the feel of an electric charge on the tongue, full of dynamic, exotic fruit, laser-like focus and, above all, freshness. That bouyant acidity that lifts the levels of fruit just that much higher and blares them from the glass. For all there is in this edition of Privat, there's certainly an important element missing. In my eyes, at least.

Unerwartet. Schmelz. Reife Aromen ohne Ende. Honig Quitten reife Birne geschmeidig mittlerer Körper mittlerebsäure erinnert mich an den 2012er emile von trimbach

Lacking fruit and acid to cope with 14% alcohol. Might have been better some years back.
