great nose; perfect mix of lightness and flavor on day one; deeper and darker with iron notes on day two; a third somewhat riper wine (albeit still with iron and structure) on day three; all three versions were interesting and yes, that is odd

I had this about 8 years ago and found it near stunning back then. When I recently stumbled on a bottle, I had to buy it. Boy, am I happy I did. I felt back then that this wine was underrated by CT and I feel it still. Frdsh and vibrant, goosebump inducing in fact. No fading at all! Chainthroer below nails it, except from the coffee. I found no coffee. Seriously good and not that expensive because noone apparently knows how good wines Ceretto made in 2004

Similar to my notes of 11-23-18:" has a reddish, clear colored body; yellow-brownish on the rim. Still has complex aromas and flavors of cherry, blackberry, red currant, earth, touches of red rose, violets, tar, spice and some toasty oak. Rich and intense fruit. And, again the structure indicates longevity for several more years. Balanced." Additionally, I got some coffee on the nose. A long finish.

Tasted double blind, paired with the 04 Scavino. Classic piedmont smells of roses, dirt, tar, a bit of spice. Palate shows dirt, earth, and roses. Very old-school and nice perfume. I guessed Nebbiolo from Langhe either Barolo or Barbaresco, either 89, 96 or 01. Was leaning towards Barbaresco since it was on the lighter, more perfumed side but couldn't get much traction from the group to push me further. Also thought it might be Alto Piemonte. Very surprised to find it was Ceretto - no oak or modern. This was lean and classic. Impressive. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20.

Ruby, dense but transparent and pretty. Lovely, though moderately reserved, nose of classic Nebbiolo fruit: red roses, strawberry, pie cherry, baking spices, and, down below those, a rich, tarry substrate. No apparent oak, much to my surprise and delight. The palate was beautifully balanced and just perfectly expresses Nebbiolo elegance. Though the wine is showing signs of softening, it is structually fairly primary, still, with crisp acidity and firm tannins, but that structure supports a wealth of lifted and bright fresh, sweet, red berry fruit. Broadly textured and fullish bodied, this is not a "big" wine by any means. Again, no oak apparent. Good length though not especially long at this youthful stage. This will improve for many more years but is utterly delicious now (at least with food). Quite a surprise tonight, this "modernist" Ceretto, and I couldn't have been more pleased. (Double decanted about 6 hours before consumption.)

Lots of oak on the nose; slightly green. Pungent clove-like aroma. Tomato-like fruit with good minerality and strong tannins. Expressive now; tastes around peak to me.

Lovely wine, after 30 minutes of decanting. Sweet blackberry and roasted tomato with chocolate, mint, and sweet oak. Reminds me of brunello with its savoriness and absence of murky Barolo tarriness. Big, partially integrated tannins. Tasty now but should age well for another decade. Classy.

Last tasted about two years ago. A reddish color with rusty hues; yellow on the rim. Still has complex aromas and flavors of cherry, blackberry, earth, touches of red rose perfume, violets, tar, spice and some toasty oak. Rich and intense fruit, but it did not seem as big as last time. I personally like it a little better. A very slight acidic sting on the tongue from the tannin, but this is is not noticeable in the mouth. A again the structure indicates longevity for several more years for this wine. I seem to pull this wine out of the cellar when we eat pasta and Italian meat sauce. An elongated and spicy finish.

Last consumed only about a month and a half ago. I guess that's probably because it was the last time I ate pasta and Italian meat sauce. The wine has not changed: "cherry, blackberry, earth, touches of red rose perfume, violets, some tar, spice and a discreet amount of toasty oak. Big, rich and full bodied." The tannins are still not totally resolved, but slightly more so than when tasted two years ago.

A reddish-ruby, mature color; yellowing on the rim. Similar to my last tasting almost two years ago: "cherry, blackberry, earth, touches of red rose perfume, violets, some tar, spice and a discreet amount of toasty oak. Big, rich and full bodied." The tannins are still not totally resolved, but slightly more so than last time; seems more mature too. Drinks well with Italian meat sauce and pasta.

Medium garnet color turning crimson at the rim with a rich, earthy nose of red cherries, tobacco, and cowhide leather. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture; brightly acidic and well-balanced. Flavors of red cherries, tobacco, toasted oak, leather and very attractive earth and gorgeous sweet tannins. Finishes long with hints of chocolate and herbs. Drink now until 2024.

This Barbaresco has a strong backbone of bright, sweet fruit that carries it a long way to greatness. However, it has some harsh edges that really haven't improved between a tasting in 2011 and now, at least on the first day of the bottle. As I tried it on day 2, on day 4, and finally on day 6, it seemed to even out quite a bit. Nevertheless, the tannic structure is still quite intense and may need a long time in the bottle to become fully integrated. Unfortunately, I will never find out, as this was my last bottle.

2+ hour decant. This was absolutely beautiful! The essence of of a classic Barolo. Completely round and delicious on the palate with an incredibly long and elegant finish. A wine with lots of soul! Wish I had more.

Very nice along with pasta covered in fresh shaved white truffles straight off the plane from Alba. Distinctly more polished and international compared to the Cigliuiti. Barriques seemed rather apparent here. A bit too glycerin-y and shy on acid. Cleanly made and respectable Barbaresco that is a pointe at the moment.

Great maturing Nebbiolo. The color shows some lightening at the edge. However this is in a great drinking spot now. Straddling the line between too young and just right.

A medium-dark reddish-ruby color; a little yellowing on the rim this time. The wine was initially aerated with a vinturi. Then, complex aromas and flavors of cherry, blackberry, earth, touches of red rose perfume, violets, some tar, spice and a discreet amount of toasty oak. Big, rich and full bodied. Elegant in the mouth. The tannin is mostly resolved but still noticeable, with a slight acidic sting on the tongue. Very nice balance and structure; the acid is powerful enough for making this a very nice food wine. Paired nicely with a ribbed pork roast, with a slight amount Louisiana spice. Yummy! As the night goes on, the tar in the wine seems more prevalent and the rose perfume abates. An extended finish that seems more expansive on the back palate. The wine has several years left before hitting its apogee, but it’s very appreciable now.

Really enjoyed the bright, crisp, clean nose of cherries. The palate started with the same nuance and broadened to big, bold fruit in the midpalate. The finish was long and clean with a strong foundation of tannin. The tannin were not harsh, but nor were they smooth and silky. This wine could use more years in the bottle and it has the fruit to carry it for a long time to come.

A medium reddish-garnet color; some light on the rim. As the cork was popped, I got immediate aromas of perfume, smoke and toasty oak. I then aerated the wine with a vinturi. After waiting a while, I got complex aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, earth, red rose perfume, a slight touch of tar, violets, spice, toasty oak. A luscious and elegant feeling in the mouth; rich and concentrated. Similar flavors, with the addition of a slight amount of dark chocolate. The tannins are mostly resolved, but still slightly noticeable. A slight tannic sting on the tongue. Great balance. A long finish. The wine is just entering the beginning phase of its maturity plateau; it has many years left. A lovely wine and a fair price.

This wine was the absolute star of the tasting; maybe because the competition was mostly from other varietals that usually have a hard time competing with a really great nebbiolo from a great year. I pretested this wine for the tasting and just did a pop and pour through the Vinturi. This time I decanted the entire bottle 3 hours before tasting and poured back into the bottle. Apparently this made a huge difference to pushing this youngster to its future limit. The wine was sweet, with notes of cherry. The nose was bright and full of fruit nuance that continued to vary. The decant helped bring the powerful fruit to the front and restrained the acid and tannins, which put the balance in a much better place than the previous bottle. The finish was long and smooth with no hint of harshness.

This wine is still a youngster. It is very light in color, but there is plenty of horsepower in the fruit and lots of variation in the nose; always a real positive for me. Tannins are still in charge and making a strong statement. After about 3 hours the flavor begins to really shine, although the nose is a big hit even shortly after opening the bottle. The acid level demands food for this wine.
