On the first night open, this wine was still drinking well and was delicious with good acidity to back up the plush dark cherry and plum Zin flavors. On the second night (tonight), the nose is lending some prune scents, more oxidative, and some of this appears again in the finish. Besides those incumbrances, the wine still fills the palate with tasty, if turned tertiary, fruit con dried fruit rollup. The fruit that went into these Biale Zins was special and a notch the superior (and senior) to any number of big-fruit, bombastic, oaken, peer Zinfandel wines from the era. I just recently rejoined the Turley mailing list, and my allotment is imminent. I'm looking forward to enjoying some well made CA old vine Zinfandel, a varietal that I've gotten away from over the past decade but have been pining for greatly this Summer. Maybe 2020 isn't the vintage to jump in on, but I suspect it'll work out fine.

W osso bucco. Lovely color, still fresh. Nose was older and worried me a bit but once open half hour this showed well. No fruitbomb here, good solid zin with all the flavors. Pepper, red fruit, tartness. Great combo with the food and it stood up. Yummy.

One of a couple bottles I recently purchased on WineBid. Drinking much better now than bottles of the same vintage I had a couple of years ago. Elegant and well balanced now. Soft, spicy, red fruit, with some subtle earthy and gamey notes. Has a nice acid backbone, which is probably what kept it going.

I'm getting used to the fact that the fruit in the Black Chicken Zins is sufficient to match the high alcoholic content. They come across to me as balanced wines. This drank much smoother than a 2006 Joseph Swan Trenton Station Zin--(perhaps the Joseph Swan was a flawed bottle?) and was popular at a church fundraiser winetasting. One participant did prefer the Joseph Swan Zin. I have liked all Black Chicken Zins I've tried.

I admit, this is one of the few Cali wines I've held on to, but it made me wish I had more voluptuous wines hanging around. Dark, sweet blackberries, damp earth, slight raisin, honeyed note otn. full in the mouth. A lavish, but not unwieldy amount of alcohol with a dry, textured finish. Still some grip to contend with. This was perfect with sweet & spicy braised lamb shank---really balanced the rich flavors.

Yes, this is overpriced at the 40-50 $$ the winery demands of it (especially with the memory of years not long past when it went for half that price at ~$25). And, yes, this is a Zinfandel wine, and it's not going to reveal any mysteries or pantomime the inexpressibles of life in the span of an evening. It's high, high alcohol and quite concentrated. It's general profile is ripped from the ilk of so many other California bombs of fruit. Now despite all that being stated under a somewhat negative pall, there's something extra to this particular Designation Robert Biale Zinfandel. They have an unmistakable character to the fruit that sets them on a different level for me. I've mainly enjoyed these "Black Chicken" Biale Zinfandel's since 2002, I think first it was. Back then, this type of thing was right up my alleyway; and I have to admit this was an eye-opening (obsession creating) wine for me. I used to absolutely relish the thought of drinking it, loved to introduce it to friends, thought I really had something. Now, it's less special for it's class, but man does that fruit sparkle, and it makes me think about what folks must have seen in Napa to believe it's such a great wine region. This blackberry, raisined cassis, and dash of black peppercorn (particularly on the nose) wine profile is easily "doppelgangered;" yet as I've noted, not often so well. Oak is fully in check; smooth, linear transitions, front to back; full without being heavy or cloying; finish balanced with some acid like a fine balsamic; so very easy to enjoy completely unthinking.

Drinking a lot better now. Showing ok fruit, but still has more meaty, savory, flavors than fruit flavors. Great acidity and overall fairly well balanced. Still, it's a bit lighter on fruit than I tend to expect from a Zin.

Starting to soften a little as the tannins integrate. Drinking well now but I don't think I would wait too much longer. A really solid wine that looks like it could stain anything. Very dark with dark fruit flavors to match.

Deep garnet color to it, a little murky when held up to the light. Surprisingly floral nose to go along with some underbrush, cinnamon and a touch of dark chocolate. Full boddied on the palate, with plums, chocolate and a little black pepper really coating the mouth. Good acidity, though the tannins are a bit soft on this. Spicy, long and somewhat sweet finish to it. Just a touch hot going down the back of the mouth. Not sure how well or long this will age, but fairly enjoyable at the moment.

Pop & Pour. Color is a dark ruby leaning towards violet. Nose is restrained but shows some purple fruits and wood. Palate starts with cherries and plums, then a wave of intense freshly cracked black pepper. Finish is tannic and drying. Within about an hour the pepper is starting to subside, leaving a simpler but still enjoyable profile with red fruits held up by a backbone of mouth-watering blood orange acidity. This was my last '06. Not much reason to leave any of these laying around my longer, if you have them.

Had this last week. Very dark in the glass. Nose of dark fruits, mocha, chocolate and spice. Full bodied on the palate with the mocha and dark fruits really coming through. Leading to a spicy finish with nice acidity but a little soft on the tannin side. Big, lush, round wine. Not for the long haul but good for what it is....a full throttle Zinfandel.

On the nose alcohol and dark fruit. The palate displays blackberry, raspberry, and more dark fruits / berries. Some vanilla. The acidity is balanced and mouth puckering on the finish. The finish last 8-12 seconds. Perhaps my best sips were enjoyed with an after dinner cigarette - Du Maurier regular. This is fine wine to pair with BBQ. Although I do not think this was good QPR, this was a very good match with my food. Easy 90pts.

It's been almost two years since I last tasted this wine and I'm afraid that some of the hard elements that I originally attributed to youth are actually the product of a lack of physiological ripeness. While there's a suite of nice zin fruit and spice flavors present they are marred by bitter and green elements. And this is from a wine that was fermented out to 15.8 degrees of alcohol. Maybe some more time in the bottle will help.

Fat, briary, plummy, big but not overly jammy. After about an hour airing in the glass, smoothed out nicely. Liked the '05 better, but maybe that's because it had another year of age, or was better matched (tried that one with good BBQ, tried the '06 at a steakhouse dinner). Anyway, not a disappointment. But tried this after an '03 Pahlmeyer Cab, so it took a mental adjustment downward to get into the Zin frame of mind.

Drink this bad boy too soon. It was a tad green and bitter when I popped and poured with friends and I immediately regretted not waiting for a couple of years or at least decanting it. I will say that as we sipped over course of 45 minutes it really opened up and improved to what I would rate as a 90 point Zin. The Old Ghost that we opened right after blew it away, however. Little early to be trying this, but gave it a shot. On the nose the fruit - a variety of red and darks - come through cleanly despite the higher alcohol content and the early age. Hay and spices are in the background. Not as much depth here as some other Biales, but a great representation of a true zin On the palate it's surprisingly in balance for the age, and the nose does not deceive, this is fruit-forward, big time zin. This is another example of what I would call a creamy zin - along the lines of a Rafanelli or Outpost. Decanted 45 minutes at Charlie Palmer Steak in 4 Seasons hotel @ Mandalay
This wine was huge. By any measure, it was big, chewy and substantive. It goes without saying that if you're looking for a wine of finesse, and elegance, this is NOT your wine. Dark purple, opaque in the glass with a brooding nose of chocolate, earthen dust and ripe plums. The wine softened up a bit from the decanting, but is too out of proportion for me. There is good underlying acidity, but the sugar levels and concentration overwhelm the wine. Drink this over the next 5-6 years, $92 @ the restaurant.

15.8% alcohol. Just what you'd expect Black Chicken to be. Big, briary Zinfandel with excellent balance that provides a punch of flavor to your mouth. A fat, juicy wine that isn't going to win tons of points for its nuance or complexity, but it sure is delicious. One of the archetypes of a delicious, big Zin. I happen to like such things. A-

Nice nose of limestone, cedar, white pepper and deep black plums. Still a little young - nice fruit on the palate, but also a little disjointed bitterness on the finish. I'm quite confident this will integrate with some more time in the bottle. This is not as fruit forward as some vintages and has the acidity and structure to be an outstanding pizza and ribs wine.

This was also young but Greenblanket thinks that it is a step up from the 05 version (a wine that he enjoyed very much). It offered an herbal, spicy nose with black fruit continuing through the finish. Excellent.

Nice hearty Zin taste. Liked it a lot - but think there are much better ones out there for the price.

This was also young but Greenblanket thinks that it is a step up from the 05 version (a wine that he enjoyed very much). It offered an herbal, spicy nose with black fruit continuing through the finish. Excellent.
