Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Brooding nose of dried red fruits, charred meats, smoke and blood. Medium body with medium to strong acidity. Concentrated and powerful. Cherries, kirsch, garrigue and licorice on the palate. The finish is long and savory with a substantial tannin presence. This wine flies in the face of those who think Clos Saint Jean can only produce flamboyant, fruit forward CdP. This wine is either a throwback to years past or perhaps a reflection of the more classic 2006 vintage. Super CdP. Drink over the next 2-3 years.

We brought this bottle up from the cellar and pulled the cork about two hours before dinner simply to let it catch its breath and come up to temperature. In the glass, a very deep crimson robe. Notes of cherry pie, burned toast, a touch of wild game...a bit hot though too and I found that to be a bit distracting. On the palate, dark cherries and plums...just a hint of spice but pretty simple really. Very soft mouthfeel. Tannins have integrated and acid is low-ish so I can't imagine any reason to hold out in hopes of more. Set your expectations, if you have any, to "moderate" and drink now.

Very dark red. A bit of barnyard on the nose. Ripe dark fruits, some earthiness and pepper, and quite rustic and tannic. Very good, but I think this wine needs some more time to reach its potential.

Soy, licorice, molasses, kirsch, blood, herbes de provence. Concentrated palate with an herbal, medicinal finish and earthy grip. Could use some time for the tannin to resolve, but still lots to like. No hurry.

Popped and poured, dark ruby/purple with perhaps the faintest hint of bricking. Pronounced nose is redolent of smoked peppercorns, cloves, damp leaves, wet clay and barbecue spices which are tinged with kirsch & menthol. Medium to medium-plus body. Flavors reflect the nose and move onward into an umami-flavored spectrum of peppered salumi, Kalamata olives, nori wrapper & teriyaki beef jerky plus black cherry, herbaceous green notes and more of the loamy/clay impression. With air the fruit gains in prominence. Decent dash of acidity and chewy, somewhat astringent tannins on the staying close. While the tannins and acidity portend a longer life, this is entering it's prime window of drinkability and would be best consumed now through the next 3-5 years before the fruit has receded.

Deep purple in color. 14.5% ABV. With tons of coaxing I picked up red fruits, olives and saline on the nose. Big, rich and robust on the palate. Flavors of garrigue, kirsch liqueur, plums and cocoa powder. Exceptionally long and still somewhat tannic finish. I'll let my last few bottles sit in cellar for another couple years. Lots of potential here and that bodes well for the special cuvees from this vintage.

This is a rich, powerful CNP. The nose has tons of dark fruit, kirsch, tar, smoke, and crushed rock. The palate is big, rich, and structured. There are plenty of tannins that are still quite robust and mouth coating, but enough fruit and acidity to keep them in check as long as it is consumed with food. I would say this is still quite young and has lots of time to improve which based on the components I have no doubt it will. In another 6-8 years this will likely be better, but it is pretty good now with decanting and a big meal. I do not like it as the VT Telegramme which is more balanced and elegant, but if you like rich CNP this is great.

Very good bottle but the nose was a bit porty and gave the impression that the wine was older than it is. Red fruit with pepper notes in a medium weight package with good balance. Nice wine but I expect it is as good as it will get and remaining stash best drank in the next 3-4 years (which is a much shorter drinking window than I would have expected for this wine).

Glorious CdP for this price. Fantastic color. Showing only very slight signs of age on the nose which was actually pleasant. The aromatics showcase nice sweet pepper, smoked bacon fat, blueberries and plums. Really rich and in your face. The palate is equally extracted but still shows nice balance as a whole. More dark fruit, truffles and black olive as well as cured fatty meat. Excellent and highly recommended for a Chateauneuf du Pape under fifty bucks.

A beautiful and robust CDP, with vanilla bean on a slightly peppery nose, medium to full-bodied, the taste of stewed plums, violet candy and flan rounded out by herbs such as rosemary and lavender. Hint of garden tomatoes in the background. If there's a flaw, it's that all these nice tastes were present but slightly undifferentiated.

Seems to be in a good place, but it's my first bottle of this. Have been drinking the '03 CSJ Combes des Fous quite a bit recently though. Not quite as complex as the Combes, but still a really good bottle of CdP that's drinking well now.
Mature dark red fruit, kalamata olive, smokey spices, hint of blueberry?, gamey meat, earth tones, espresso. Smooth, grippy tannins. This has quite a few years left on it.
Still have a half case of this, so will follow it for a while.

Not really quite as ready for business as last one a year and a half ago even with double decent 4-5 hours ahead. Nevertheless a quietly but solidly expressed garrigue and spicy berry wine with lavender, wisps of smoke and cedar. An earthiness layer that is so fresh that it is like dead leaves or needles from a tree that have yet to fall off to the ground. Drink (with air) or hold.

wonderful dark fruits--black cherry, camphor, lots of wild herb, classic CdP black tea, licorice/fennel, cedar, maybe a little juniper. This one is really on point right now after several hours of air. Definitely modern-styled with pronounced extraction but so well made and elegant. I really like where the 06s are right now but will stay out of another bottle of this for at least several years.

Dark color. Fruity, garrigue nose. Meaty, spicy, low to moderate acidity. Velvet mouth feel, large on the mid-palate. Largely resolved tannin (by the glass) with medium finish.

Dense garnet. Nose driven first by herbs, lavender, with hard red fruit like cranberry, finely perfumed, but primary. On the palate currants, herbs, black pepper, smokiness. Ripe but substantial tannins. Quite young. Real good and will be better.

Poppy at Campania (Campania in Dallas, TX): Tasted non blind. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of cocoa, dust, smoke, white pepper, berries and plums. Flavors of currants, black cherries, black berries, white pepper and a dash of bitters on the finish. Medium to bright acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Hold. Such a young wine. 93+?

Châteauneuf-du-Pape tasting: The nose had cherry and raspbery aromas that almost seemed candied. There were also some spice aromas on the nose. The palate had big flavors of cherry and raspberry, with a licorice note that carried through a very long finish. Tasted this right after an 07 Pegau, and the Clos Saint Jean just didn't seem as polished. Still, this was one of my top 3 or 4 wines from the tasting. Very nice.

Superb wine. Shows the elegance of the year. Rich in its own right, but not quite having the extra gear of the '07. Doesn't need it in my opinion, as it is a complete drink, especially if you like the style.

Wow! ... but not in a good way. I think this is the most corked bottle I've ever had. Its like a bottle of TCA concentrate ... I should mix it with water and try again.
Later: But then the strangest thing happened. I let the half glass sit for 3-4 hours and a lot of the corkiness actually blew off or dissipated. Very strange. It was still slightly corked but now I can taste the deep concentrated plum with lots of spices. Finish is short with some mustiness, but I think I'll finish my glass.

CdPs and Bordeaux (My place): nose: has a more dark and mysterious nose then the previous two wines with black fruits, black currants, black cherries, spice tones, garrigue, herbs and a touch of black pepper starts to come out. Good depth and coming off as very young right now
taste: firm tannins give this a real good backbone with well balanced tones of black fruits, black cherries, herbs, garrigue, black licorice, and some hints of incense. Has a good rich medium/full feel to it right now, and definitely comes off as rough around the edges
overall: This showed very well blind. It was certainly different from the two 07s that had been before it. This could take a bit to fully sort itself out, but it would be a lot of fun to find out what will happen to it. It may not fully get up to the level of what the 07 may be able to achieve, but this is well worth having

I haven’t had any Clos Saint Jean before, but this had me going nuts all night. In the glass it’s much lighter and transparent than I would have expected. This nose is very, very sexy and changed a good amount through the night with scents of musk, anise, lavender, raspberries, cherries, incense, and what you might describe as kind of an animal sauvage. In a way, sort of masculine as it reminds me of a musky perfume at times. The palate isn’t quite up to par with the nose, but still very delicious. A middleweight wine with lovely red fruits, licorice, spices and a medium long finish. I need to get more of this.

I think mmurray hit the nose & palate right on the head. I'll add just a touch of black olive on the nose, and a slight medicinal/aspirin taste on the finish. It screams for food. Editing my TN, the medicinal finish blew off after about 10 minutes.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Lovely nose of perfume, cigar box, spices and a mix of dark fruits. Good fruit on the palate with flavors of berries, cherries and a dash of currants on the medium to long finish. Medium acidity, tannins and body. This wine is why people rob the cradle when it comes to Chateauneuf: it's so tasty right now. Hold instead for better things to come. My favorite wine of the tasting.

Medium crimson in color, with plum, cassis, and smoke aromas. The palate exhibits dark fruit, black olive, sagebrush, and leather flavors. The fruit is appealing for its ripeness. Crisp, clean mouth feel, with a medium finish. Par for the vintage.

The nose is really nice, but there is so much heat on the pallet. I feel like I'm drinking a liquor, which is not what I want from a wine. The nose betrays the quality, but the pallet is a little out of balance. This is a big wine. I can't decide how to go on this one. It certainly needs more air which I will go with on the next bottle I have. Awesome mouth feel. This could go anywhere from an 86 to a 93. I can't make up my mind.

by the glass at Cova, long week, not sure how long this had been popped, but it was ready, deep dark color, nose of sparse burnt black fruit, taste the texture of glycerin with the fruit appearing but partially concealed by the firming tannins, very thick...should probably wait another year or two for more, nice offering by the glass at a local wine bar

Burnt sugar on the nose. Powerful bouquet. On the palette it feels like chewing on a hot black rubber tire, in a good way. Distant notes of molasses and burnt meat. Decent concentration. Well integrated.

I had two bottles, now I have only one left. Shame on me for opening this sucker! Awesome wine that will benefit from a good sleep in the cellar. Big red fruits cloaked with tannins.

drank with a cuillieron and it did not compare well. after an hour or two the wine acted better. a softer fruit and more sugar on the nose, but not too much. a nice wine, but i am going to wait another year for this to pan out.

WIML92-93?
Tasted April 11, 2009 at a retail tasting.

France vs. Italy: International Showdown (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had licorice, meat, spice, cherry, raspberry, and smoke. The palate was velvety smooth, and had smoke, cherry, cassis, meat, spice, and a licorice finish.

Medium crimson in color, with plum, cassis, and smoke aromas. The palate exhibits dark fruit, black olive, sagebrush, and leather flavors. The fruit is appealing for its ripeness. Crisp, clean mouth feel, with a medium finish. Par for the vintage.

Very expressive, and young. Fresh bing cherry notes with a slight earthy quality that makes things interesting.
