  • In view of my note earlier this month, I thought it best to approach another of my four remaining bottles tonight. The colour spectrum was the same: weak core, brick-red and tawny at fringe. This bottle seemed more aromatic - the raspberry being more evident, riper and not allowing the wood to dominate. The mellow mouth took only 10 minutes to begin showing sweetness and length, which surprised me by persisting for 90 minutes. While being a better bottle than the one previously, it still didn't reach the captivating highs of the bottle in May 2023. Very good, though.

  • This bottle showed a brick-red colour, with a weak core, going to tawny at the fringe. Earthy, malty, old fuder-type oak with rather lame grenache dominating in the challenged fruit department. A bit over an hour later, there was some very faded raspberry, but the nose didn't develop any further. Sweetish, broad, mellow and old fruit mouth was more Côtes-du-Rhône than Châteauneuf. Slightly drying tannins. This bottle never opened the window to the engrossing highs of the bottles had in the first half of 2022 and 2023. Merely good plus.

  • More than a year later, another bottle is retrieved from the cellar. This one shows evidence of an old leak and the level is 3cm below the cork. Looking different to the previous bottle, being a medium garnet with a dark brown edge. Oxidized nose, but recovery is achieved at 10 minutes, at which point it noses most attractively, with mature dark-fruit, leather and barrique scents. This time I can't pinpoint the mourvedre or, more surprisingly, the grenache, the nose here being more wholly than the sum of its parts as was the case previously. In its initial state, the palate is oxidized and thin, but then it builds body, depth and richness. Quite a treat and between very good plus and fine for about 30 minutes, before reverting to its initial state. This is Châteauneuf is a wine for a table of four to six if one is to best utilize the short drinking window, too short for a couple to make the best of the bottle.

  • This Magnum bottle was a real positive experience. My expectations were not too high as 2 in the last two years tasted regular 75cl bottles turned out to be disappointing.

Not decanted, opened 30 minutes upfront and drank over three hours.

Ruby red color with orange reflexes. Nose of cherries, plums with herbal notes. Long lasting on palate with nice sweetness. The 14,5% alcohol are very well integrated. It appears as a very well aged, elegant but still warm Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Really nice.

  • Bottle drunk in the last week of January, not decanted. Light ruby colour with a russet fringe, but at 40 minutes, the light ruby changes to a brick red. Undersized nose. Hey, where's the fruit? I should have decanted, but reading some recent tasting notes, I was worried that the wine was too fragile for that. The fruit does arrive, starting with the mourvedre showing some live-animal fur and at 20 minutes the nose is well behaved. It takes the grenache a further 10 minutes to give a nice light-red berry lift.

The fist mouth reveals a wine of medium body due to the 14.5% alcohol, but also one that is lean, acidic and with little fruit. Later, there is some dark-fruited berry developing courtesy of the mourvedre, but it's still too acidic. But at 20 minutes, I'm feeling grip as the wine develops and the good fruit therein emerges, balancing the acidity and adding sweetness to the finish. At 30 minutes, the palate is getting sweeter still. However, at 1 hour and 20 minutes, it's lost the sweetness. The duration of the sweet-spot returns my mind to the mechanically operated parking-meters in the central-business district of Melbourne in the 1970's, with the moving arrow pointing to the the time remaining. Once the hour was up, a spring in the meter released an "expired" sign in red. And so it was the case here. This very good wine delivers very nicely indeed between 20 and 80 minutes, but a moment later, you know your time's up.

  • brownish color
a bit peaty with medium finish
kept drinkable over three days; nevertheless over the peak; this bottle was not my favorite; I am wondering how my remaining Magnum of this wine is doing

  • This has shown erratically (to my taste). Ripe, hot (ETOH) and torrefacted notes (don’t care for espresso, thank you). Chateauneuf can present with many different characteristics, but these are not my faves. Merely good, no doubt others will like better.

  • A private dinner with friends (at home): Final magnum from a small lot of three. Identical to my previous note. Quite a pleasant combination of leathery tannins and some remaining, succulent Grenache fruit. Did well with the Côte de boeuf with green pepper sauce.

  • A private tasting (at home): Magnum. Mature, juicy Grenache fruit, autumnal style, leathery tannins, good length. A decent CdP, fully mature even in this larger format.

  • From same case as the disappointing previous 3 bottles: Meaty, dark fruited, funky with loads of garrigue; so much youthful energy as to be awkward and too young. Huge contrast to the dead bottles in the case. Freaky

  • Three bottles tasted recently: nose and flavored way beyond "maturity". This wine is in severe decline. Stored perfectly, this wine was excellent 5 years ago. Inexcusable to be so short-lived.

  • Bought at the Château's tasting room in 2012. This bottle was ever so slightly corked, but just enough to keep us from pursuing it. Too bad; we enjoyed this wine while visiting CDP and thought it was just starting to hit its stride and could be a 91 pointer.

  • Magnum. Mature, slender, cedary, smoke, crushed red berries, hints of garrigue and violets, spices, medium weight, fresh and with good tannic grip, transparent, subtle but aromatic, complete and with good length. A business dinner, Bussum, NL.

  • This 14 years old Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a light red color, large rim, almost no aromas, with alcohol super exceed all others. Cork was fine . This bottle is drinkable, but, it is down hill. After 30 minutes, taste and aromas were gone. It was expected to last until 2015 and I don't think so.

  • D20min. Brick red, yellow rim, 4.5. Discrete spicy garrigue bouquet. Rather tight harmonious palate, still some tannin. Drink now onwards

  • A bit over the top. Lack of tannins, lots of raisins. Ok, but not at all like it should be.

  • This has really developed nicely. Not spectacular, but into a very solid, burgundian-styled Chateaneuf. Garrigue, raspberries, leather and some licorice comes out of the glass. It's pure, kind of slender and elegant rather than in your face, but still complex in the mouth with nice and clean raspberries with a shade of white pepper, some leather, something close to forest floor and then finishes with delicious licorice. This shows that Mont-Redon needs time to strut it's stuff. It has developed into something much better compared to the bottle I had two years ago.

  • Slight TCA noticable on the nose, but left to breathe in the glass for a hour before tasting. Delicate, developed nose of black berries, forest floor, spicebox and cedar. Brandy style mouthfeel of spices and slight alcohol heat; good lenght and paired very well with dinner of moose fillet in redwine reducted creamsauce served with mushroomss, cognacmarinated raisins and celeryroot purè.

  • After dinner drink at Chun's (Villa delle Rose, Taman Mahkoda): Shipped over to Singapore by Matt, Chun's Provencale neighbour, and kindly popped by him when he found out that I like CdP. Not the most heavyweight of wines, but lovely drinking and immenesly enjoyable. Lovely vintage - I have not had a single bad CdP from 2001 - and it is always such a pleasure to come back to slightly more traditionally styled CdPs after too many, plush, velvety bruisers. Very developed for a 2001, the nose on the wine showed marmite, leather and rich plums layered with earth and mushrooms. Beautiful nose. Palate was extremely fresh, with blackcurrants, sweet cherries and prunes packaged in tight, but well-sculpted and fine-grained tannins. Okay finish with a whiff of smoke and a touch of heat here and there. With time, the palate stretched out a little and seemed a little thin, especially when the fruit was placed against the loads of fresh acidity. I thought perhaps the wine just entered into a little dip and would have emerged again in half an hour or so in the glass, but it was all but finished by then. This could have used a bit more time in the bottle, but perfectly fine to drink now. I would have loved to have tried it with some food - I bet it would have been smashing if paired with a game dish.

  • Wine got better with every new bottle opened showing more deoth of fruit and richness. I like the style which is more elegant and layered.

  • The best of 3 bottles ... this showed 3 distinct layers of flavor. It started with spice and cedar and then coated the palate with deep dk. cherry licquer and bitter chocolate, then finished with dark mineral and eucalyptus. The finish held strong and lush. Impressive.

  • Simple and enjoyable but lacking the weight or complexity that most C-D-P exhibit these days. Light red fruits, spice, mesquite and herb.

  • Cassis, graphite, hints of vanilla on the middle pallet, slightly tannic. Drank very well for what you would think was still a 'young' Chateauneuf. Drank with dark chocolate.

  • A smoothe, elegant C-D-P. Does not have the power of many modern C-D-P's but makes up for it with balance. Med-bodied with low acid and med - tannins. Med intense red fruits with a distinct lingering cinnamon and red pepper spice. Has excellent food pairing potential.

  • Elegant and slender. Drinks very well now. Mature, but but with plenty of fruit left. Can probably be left in the cellar for 10 (or more) years as Ch MR usually ages really well - but I tend to prefer the balanced mix of fruit and maturity that this wine exhibits now. Drink!

  • still young and tannic, this wine could stand to sit for a while longer. tastes like almost all grenache. has some green elements although not overpowering. notes of floral, cigar box and spice. pomegranate with crisp acidity. a tad light for a cdp but different, elegant and quite enjoyable.

  • Pretty atypical CdP. Lacks concentration. However, quite a lot of elagance and finesse. It's a drink up now. Better than the 2000 but on par with the 98.

  • Mont-Redon's 2001 vintage Chateauneuf-du-Pape tastes beyong its years in maturity. Typically more elegant and subtle than many of its neighbors, the simple, silky style adopted by the winery has left this wine with few tannins or copigments to eat while it sleeps in the bottle. As a result, the color and flavors resemble a wine much older than 6 years.

Do not confuse my statements with an assertion that this wine is past its prime. Rather than tasting tired or insipid, the Mont-Redon CdP 2001 exhibits flavors and aromas of dried flowers (rose petals), dried fruits (berries) and leather. The tight tannic structure common in more expensive wines (i.e. Beaucastel) in their youth would continue to obfuscate the ripe fruit flavors of a CdP of similar age yet, even without decanting, the tannins in the Mont-Redon have long since melted away. The color of the wine in the glass is brick red, with slight browning around the rim. I tasted this same wine in the summer of 2005, and the fruit was fresh and dismissively simple, soft. Two years later, the wine has evolved into something much more complex.

Enjoy your bottles now. With such rapid development taking place, I fear that it will not take long for the wine to begin its downward journey.

  • Tasted against a 2001 Bonny Doon Le Cigare and a 2002 Vieux Telegramme (also Chateauneuf du Pape). Interested to enjoy these three very different Rhone style wines together. This wine had a delicate nose and a light, well-balanced impression on the palate. The California Rhone was noticeably bigger than either French wine, and more pleasing to those of us that tend to drink California style reds. But this was perhaps more elegant.

  • Very poor performance, its a drink up with no real potential. I still got one bottle left in my cellar and Ill try it very soon hoping for a bit more volume, depth and character. Was not impressed at all. /steen
