13%abv. Proper and classic left bank claret. Good to go from the start after decanting for sediment. This really sang from the glass and evolved over 4-5 hours to the end of the bottle. Notes of earth, undergrowth, cigar, mahogany, dusty libraries, red fruit, spice, pencil shavings all emerged over time. Great presence but light in the mouth and some creaminess of texture. Some welcome charm too (unlike many Bdx). Great value.

Nicely aged and a good representation of a St. Estephe. Smooth and luscious with flowers and earth and long lasting tingly tannin. Still pretty big wine; will do well for another 10 years.

The Grand Tour - day twelve (Bordeaux): Decanted. Farmyard, leather, leather, crushed rock, black currant, spice, tobacco on the nose. Soft, sweet black fruit then fine, soft slightly floury tannins. There is some leather as well but this is surprisingly youthful. Yum..
Beautiful and mature, rustic bouquet with cigar and some pleasant barnyard. On the palate the same impressions, good acidity and round and soft tannin. Mature now and the next two years. Elegant style.

All black fruit and earthy, with just a hint of barnyard. A bit of work to drink as it has aubstantive body but is very dry on the palate following an '01 Ducru Beaucaillou--needs food. Not entirely sure where it's going from here.

St Estephe @ RSJ (RSJ, London): Riper, redder, a little glossier and slightly lifted. Noticeably more grippy and fury-tannined on the palate. Relatively austere at the moment. A bit dry and ever so slightly green. *(**)

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ My place Bordeaux): From the start a beautiful bouquet with still some dark fruits, cedar, smoke, toast and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate dark berry fruits, a touch of chocolate, graphite, soft acidity and round tannin with still some bite and slightly drying in the finish. The wine improves with some more air. Gives you a luxury feeling. The wine is at its peak now and will probably stay there for another year or two.

I tend to like this Chateau. This has surprising power, is well balanced and so composed. The subtle nose giving way to so much strength on the palate, which is very earthy, not so much fruit, more floral really - violets..there's something impressive about this. Feels very traditional. Very ready to drink but I don't see it fading any time soon either. 92+

Seemed appropriate to open a claret in honor of the open championship. Maturing garnet color. Typical, rugged Saint Estephe: animal fir, gravel and dark fruit. A hint of perfume emerges with air. The palate is a bit course and there is a bitter edge in the finish. However, this is gutsy Bordeaux that stands up to a grilled dinner. Not my favorite but perfectly good. (87)

Needed a good glass of wine after a bad day with a burglary in my house (no wine stolen though). Very nice classical mature Bordeaux. Dark garnet colour. No apparent signs of age. Not fruit driven, but clear notes of cigar box and dries herbs. Opens up nicely in the glass. Very good and perfectly mature now.

DBKITC nailed it, so I'm just going to repost his note with due credit: Pretty garnet color. Classic St. Estephe nose of rich plum and berry fruit mixed with a meaty, animal fur note. Medium bodied wine that shows an austere fruit profile and a slightly undernourished finish. A classic wine that drinks better with food. Very nice QPR, but not for the fruit obsessed.

Deep ruby/garnet. Open, accessible nose with cassis, gravelly minerals, some cedary oak, perhaps hints of tobacco and leaf. Classic claret in other words. Medium/full bodied on the palate with lovely cool cassis fruit, minerals again, just a hint of liquorice, tannins are well integrated and there is lovely lithe acidity carrying a good length, black fruited finish. Not hugely complex or long but harmonious, balanced, refreshing - a perfect partner for lamb chops. Just entering its prime drinking window - now to 2017ish? (13% ABV)

It;s a sad, sad day when you realize that the prior 10 bottles of this wine you had, were consumed too soon. What a difference a few years makes. This wine is fully mature, void of the overpowering dryness that plagued this it for years. What remains is a beautiful tobacco taste with dark berries and currants. Smooth as silk, so smooth that on wonders how long before a massive decline. The tannins have packed their bags and moved on. I am not sure how long this wine will last, but it is surely drinking beautifully now!

Beautiful nose of pencil lead, cedar box and cassis. It has some meaty sausage flavors as well. There is a base of ripe cherries. Nice flavors of cherry juice and cassis. A good example of the st Estephe style. Lots of fruit (rather sweet on the palate) The nose was muted but sophisticated. The 1997 opened recently faired better with more tannin to balance the wine. Decanted for 30 minutes. This was compared to 1996 Haut Marbuzet which was twice the price . I personally prefered the cleaner Marbuzet but the Lafon was the prefered wine. However both wines were good and I believe will benefit from further aging.
