light amber gold in color. A soft colored gold. Sweet but not too sweet. Finish lingers for quite a while. Currently drinking by itself. With food momentarily. This was also my thought ten mins after opening. Did not decant. The acidity is super soft in texture. Not a citrus style of acidity but a mouth watering acidity. There is some slight citrus there but just slightly. This wine is drinking superbly I wish I could’ve tried in its youth to see what it has progressed to.
Day 2. The acidity shows a bit more than yesterday. Just a bit. The wine isn’t as sweet as it was yesterday. I like it better today than yesterday. I get mango on the palate. Sounds crazy but that’s what I’m gettin. Lil bit of citrus fruits. Basically I’m getting soft tropical fruits. Lil bit of banana flavor. Call me crazy but it’s like really soft flavored tropical fruits even getting some persimmon flavor. This wine begs for some spicy food. I’m drinking it once again without the accompaniment of food.

Deep gold. Full mature but certainly not declining or fading, this explodes from the glass with aromas of dried apple, peppermint, gingery botrytis, orange peel, fresh lemon and a hint of crushed stones. On the palate this is medium to full bodied - from sugar, not from alcohol - high acidity, a perfect sweet-sour balance, and a juicy, vibrant texture. Very tasty.

Nose has become a bit more honeyed with a touch of spice. Less complex than I recall from a few years ago. Fairly rich mouth. Acidity has faded a bit in the finish, but still long and enjoyable.

Golden brown. Apricots, baked apple.Sweetness predominates over acidity but still a reasonable balance. This is still worthwile drinking and not nearly as dark as my ‘76 d’Yquem which I must open soon.

On the sweet side of demi-sec. Baked apple, tropical fruits, a bit of caramel. Bright mellowed acid. This is in a great place, drinking great, mature and mellow but still full of verve and energy. Really a treat.

Burnished brass. Nicely mature, though not at risk of falling off. Still RS, balanced by good acidity. Lightly baked apple, some mineral. Nice wine. I must say a very nice match with chicken sausage, apples, cabbage and onions cooked in the same wine with black pepper and charnuska.

Baked apple, bright but round acidity. Nicely mature, a bit of sweetness but really well balanced. Fully mature, drinking well, fruit fading a bit. Probably drink sooner than later, don't think this will get better but not dropping off anytime soon either.

My last bottle and it disappointed. Golden yellow color. Melancholy nose. Sweet with low to moderate acidity. No petrol. Notes of apricots and star fruit. A little funk on the palate at the end. This bottle was past its prime. 81 points.

Deep gold in color. A very ripe hints at some oxidation but holds together to reveal baked apricots, pineapple marmalade, baking spice and burnt sugar. Palate is viscous and creamy with Auslese like weight showing tropical fruit marmalade, caramel apple pie along with a sweet and honeyed finish. A touch more acidity would have brought about the tension and exquisite balance that is present in the great 2001 Spatleses.

Deep gold in color. An advanced nose exhibits ripe pineapple and apricots, honey, burnt sugar and dried herbs. The palate is far younger then the nose with good acidity framing viscous crushed tropical fruit marmalade, touch of caramel, honeyed herbs and a long creamy and sweet finish.

Still drinking extremely well. Apricot and wet stone nose seems even more pronounced now relative to when I last drank this two years ago. Ample acidity makes this wine still seem young and fresh. Could easily see another 5 or more years in this wine.

Cork moldy and soft. This wine is all about the fruit on the palate. not a huge nose, but some apples, the rich apple, passion fruit, and white peach in the mouth. long crisp finish. nothing spectacular, but just a great clean wine.

- Yellow brown color with medium forming legs - Still quite fresh and vibrant. Nice sweetness - well balanced. Paired with an Asian pork chop and grilled bok choy. Held up well to the acids in the marinade. Finish lasts for 30-45 seconds. Definitely ready now but will also last for several years. I will open my other bottle in a out two years.

Drinking really well now. Nose of wet stone and apricot pit. Good mid palate. Plenty of fuit and acidity left. Apricot (and maybe green tea?) continue on the finish. Feel it still has several good years ahead. Glad I'm stocked up on these.

At a party so a little sparse on the note, but the splendor of this wine shown thru nevertheless. Bright fruits, laced with a fruit-driven sweetness that made this very fresh. Also had nice balancing acidity. Was very pleased that most gravitated to the Cali chards and this lasted most of the evening.

3rd time I have had this wine and it just keeps getting better all the time. This is the first time I have scored it in the 92 point range which the WA gave it. I bought this for $15 on release in 2003 and opened it over the weekend with some grilled pork chops, baked potatoes, apple sauce and butternut squash baled with butter and brown sugar. Simply a beautiful wine which drank great thru the whole evening. Aromas of walking through an apple orchard. Wonderful balance of sweetness. Noted the same flavors of green apples and passion fruit as previous bottles but with more depth. The most striking thing about this wine was how fresh and pure it tasted 10 years after the vintage. This is why you age German Riesling and what you should expect from the 2001 vintage. I have 1 more bottle which I'll hold until 2016. 92-93 points.

Day 1... This takes a bit to come to life, and then shows slate and honeyed nose (which seems to be just beginning to oxidize, with a hint of sherry). I’m not quite sure what to make of this, it seems a bit disjointed, even a bit boring despite its big body and big acidity. It has a creamy mid-palate and a good (but not great), puckering finish along with a mildly off-putting bitter note which I’ve found in other Strubs. Disappointing. Drink up. 85 pts. Froze the second part the bottle, and on... Day 2... This is much better today, it has come together and tastes much more seamless and suave, with nothing oxidized when served nicely chilled (as the wine warms, I get those sherry elements again). So, it needs to be served cold to keep it in focus. This is now more 2001-esque with it's big fruit married to crunchy, exhilarating acidity. Still has a slightly bitter note (almost burnt orange), but it's held in check behind the abundance of mouth-coating melon, citrus and honey. 89-90 pts.

Good color and pleasant evolved aromas but definitely seemed tired. The flavors were on the dull, diffuse side and it lacked the definition I was expecting. It would have been better as a sipper on the deck with pears and Stilton rather than the salmon we served it with. One remaining bottle that I will be sure to finish this summer.

I've been a fan of Strub's 2001s all along, and stashed away a fair amount. In my tastings, no vintage since has come close to these 2001s at Weingut Strub. This spatlese is going strong, with a sweet nose of ripe golden delicious apples and some honey, but the bouquet is a little shy overall. To taste, it's a bit straight-forward and simple, but it is highly mouthwatering with big acids matching plenty of lush fruit. Good puckering length. This is a good, solid riesling whose charm is mainly in its terrific zest. Seems perhaps mid-way on its maturity arc. I'm enjoying this and the $14 I paid once upon a time. 90-91 pts, with upside if any more complexity develops.

No stars, no banners, just solid, fruity wine with all the brightness you could ask for & a lingering, citric finish. This is the antidote to all those overweight, soft Rieslings that have been clogging the pipeline in more recent vintages.

Showing relatively dry, and in general less of everything than 12/07 bottle. Might have benefitted from a little more air. Might be fading, but given the success of the producer that year, I'm betting it will come out improved after another 2-3 years.

Sure enough, you've got a shut down wine six years from bottling -- don't go there. Tempting if you're sitting around looking for Riesling with more finesse than offered in 05 and 06 bottlings, and want it dry without trocken alcohols, but right now this tastes little more interesting than a solid Kabinett. Should warrant an extra three points when it opens back up.

I have 3 bottles of this wine but the bottle Blue Oval brought to the CWM offline on Saturday was the first I've tried. This was a very good wine but clearly a step behind the 2001 Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Spätlese*** that I had last year (at the same restaurant coincidentally). Balanced acidity with green apple and some passion fruit notes. 90 points.
