From magnum. Straw yellow. Nose of ripe fruit, almost fortified. Slight smell of engine oil. The palate has high acidity and appears fresh. Limestone and gravel, citrus leaning towards lemon and lime peel. Ripe, yellow soft apples. Mature and developed.

I enjoyed a fantastic seafood dinner at La Cagouille in Paris two nights ago. I had planned to order a 2008 Raveneau Butteaux, which was listed on their online wine list for a fair price. That was no longer available, so after scouring the list, I picked a bottle of 2005 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles Château Grenouilles. I hadn’t had this wine in over a dozen years, finishing young a six pack I had bought in the early days of my wine collecting. I was a little worried as my friend Jenise had posted an oxidized report a few years ago. The sommelier allayed my worries, assuring to pick something else should this bottle be advanced, and mentioning it was acquired directly from the winery. Not only was this bottle pristine, it was a near perfect example of a 20 yo GC Chablis. The regional character shined through, with dense limestone/oyster shell mineral salinity. Rich, ripe but still fresh. Little if any oxidative notes. Waxy lemon juice and curd, flowers, wet rocks. I loved this bottle.

Deep gold-orange. To be fair, some people liked this, including its owner, but the oxidation was well past my tolerance levels with cloying notes of butterscotch, bergamot, bay leaf and stewed cabbage.

Big, intense in the nose, full bodied oak aged Chablis... Malo too, I think, and the age makes this a perfumed chard of real substance. It had a crispness and citrus character, but was so powerful as to be a standalone wine or one served with a big, rich dinner. Everyone liked it.

One of the best Chardonnay I have tasted. Really a pleasure in mouth. Really long. A fat/creamy Taste typical with Chardonnay. Could stay 3 extra years in cellar.

Dorato chiaro. Tipicamente “ostricoso” al naso, ricco ma composto, con miele d’acacia, camomilla, susina fresca, pietra focaia, artemisia. Fresco e rigoroso, mai debordante, dii lunghezza notevole e caleidoscopica. Chiude agrumato

DRC 2009 tasting (Operakällaren, Stockholm): Bright yellow colour. In the nose ripe yellow fruit, some honey, mineral and some oak. Noticeable mineral on the palate, yellow apple, good acidity (but not extremely high), elegant. Considerably more “classically Chablis-styled” and elegant on the palate than in the nose, in my opinion. Served from magnum.

A lovely Chablis. It’s mature now, and from a really good producer. Has a nice creaminess, without being oily. Still very clean and fresh with nice citrus/lime and minerals/limestones.

To my palate this one is definitely ready to go. I do not know that is it getting any better and I do not think is need to get better. Very enjoyable Chablis with well defined citrus and mineral nose and palate, good mid-palate and long finish. The acidity in the wine is not as dominant as one might expect but enough top carry the fruit.

Mint, brine, and licorice on the nose. Good mineral base, but the wine is tightly wound. Not nearly as accessible at this stage as was the glorious '01, which isn't surprising. I don't suspect this will open up for at least 3 years, probably more, but it should be a very good wine.

Some might rightfully say I drank this too young, but I don't think I would have enjoyed it any more had I waited another five or ten years. It was not closed in any way, shape or form. I haven't been overly impressed with some of the '05 Chablis I've tried, but this wine was exceptional. Expressive nose and palate. While it presents dense apple and citrus, the essence of this wine is saline and mineral. It evokes a cool sea breeze. Beautiful mouthfeel, ample cut and a long, viscous finish. There might be a subtle suggestion of oak that a purist may disdain. However I found this a first-class Chablis, and it's one of my WOTY. Bravo!

Opened for dinner, kept in the fridge and tasted in the course of three days. Slate and stoney minerals, citruslike acidity, subdued white and yellow fruit, broad and penetrating on the palate, but still very, very young. The style is fairly ripe though for a Chablis, but this has good balance and persistence. Kept itself together during three days.

The nose is holding back, but promising and classy. Subtle aromas of grass, green apples, spice, steel and toast. The palate is much more giving, with ripe green and yellow fruit, good acidity, citrus fruit and peel, stones and good overall balance. The fruit and fat coats the acidity nicely. Fairly ripe for a Chablis, but this seems to be the norm in this vintage.
