Drink at Nimb Copenhagen (still one bottle left) Nose : intense hint of steel at the beginning which evaporated after, lots of red fruits fresh cherries plums long precise. Hint of liquorice and fresh tobacco leaf Mouth : still young and full of life, full body, lots of cherries and plums. Hint of saltiness so young. Finals : long intense, what an amazing surprise, very well kept bottle aging potential 5 years.

Suite Leroy Dinner (Hong Kong): Brown sugar, woody, sour cherry, tart strawberry, orange spice, lifted florals, soy sauce, five spice, roasted game. So precise with superb deep heat. Very mellow and sophisticated. 94-95

Same Btl as R&Rler & Brad E. Palish red color with ambering edges. This was in decent condition for a 51 year old Burg from an era when wine was generally poorly handled in the distribution system. Wine is sturdier than we think :). However this btl was in mid plus decline and I'd be inclined to drink these up if I had anymore. I enjoyed the tart cherry earth mushroom and forest floor aspect of the wine a lot but its is starting to tire and I get a little residual brown sugar on the finish. Fun to try a wine that is only 11 years younger than myself any time.

A Lot of Older Gems at The Kenwood: A Burgasm & a Few Bordeaux (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Light medium gold color. This had been decanted of its sediment. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Brad E's bottle and a real treat tonight. I found this special from the start and thought it kept developing interest as we went along. Red fruits, tart strawberry and pomegranate, sous bois, more subtle earth tones and hints of blood orange on a medium bodied frame with lovely integration and elegance.

Zachys La Paulee "Warm-up" Dinner (Lafayette - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Black fruit with mushroom, but somewhat tired. Moderate length and complexity. Much less exciting than another bottle from a year ago, which was actually from the same source.

Burgundy, Barolo Dinner @ BRERA, Los Angeles (Officine BRERA): Served side by side with a 66' Faiveley Clos de Beze. At once, the 66' Leroy Chapelle had us shifting gears to what was clearly a contrasting style. While the Faiveley was built on freshness and a slight rusticity, the Leroy was all about concentration, darker fruit, and some sweetness, though still with a firm line of acidity, and mostly resolved tannin. This wine also showed plenty of life, on its plateau with no signs of slowing down any time soon. Saw less than an hour of air before serving. Quite a wine, but part of a better flight.

This is the first off bottle I've had of this wine. It is still very vibrant with good acidity but it had a mustiness that never went away. I felt it was very slightly corked but others disagreed. Anyhow, not the best showing.

Great Wine Dinner with Friends (RPM Steak - Chicago IL): I think this was only open 20-30 minutes before serving. Elegant red and black cherry aromas to start, much fresher than I'd expect from 1966, but this was a 2006 library release. I preferred the palate, which showed greater concentration and animale character, showing more real Gevrey. Lots of power to start, which shortened with more time in glass.

Wow. Wow. Amazingly fresh and youthful nose of spice, earth, dried roses, truffles and more spice. Classic power without weight on the palate this was at once delicate and pretty while delivering persistent and bright flavors every minute of the 3 hours we had the bottle open. Incredible detail and nuance but the freshness and brightness of the red fruit really stole the show. An absolutely beautiful mature bottle of Burgundy.

The color is very light & the sediment very fine. This is very much at it’s peak, but I’d guess it still has years of drinkability left. There are aromas of strawberries & orange peel with earthy undertones. The fine tannins have completely resolved & the acidity provides just the right amount of brightness to give it a really silky mouthfeel. It really compliments the duck. This is a very lovely wine, without the intensity one usually expects from Mme. Bize-Leroy. It’s a shame that these late releases from her cellar have risen in price so much over the past few years....

Cork intact. Nose on open a bright wave of sweet acidity. Powerfully alive and still vibrant after 45 years! Tangerine with tangy acidity. A terrific bottle of Burgundy. Another Leroy masterpiece.

Post Insignia Dinner at Siggy's: My second go at this in a week. The color is a pale strawberry red. The nose is very enticing, offering musky sour cherry with orange notes, mineral and earthy notes. Refined and pleasing. On the palate this is surprisingly fresh, with red and black fruits, mineral and earth. Great flavor intensity throughout. Nice acidity. Satisfying finish.

Post-Insignia Burgundy Dinner (Our House): My second taste of this in a week. Layered, perfumed flavors of sour cherries and mushrooms. More concentrated (red) fruit than the 72 Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er, tasted side-by-side (see TN). Complex, elegant and beautifully balanced. Unmistakably Grand Cru. Delicious.

Winestreet Does Leroy (WA Frost, St. Paul): Delicious layers of high-toned, fresh red fruit, tea, and baking spices. Less earthy and mushroomy than the 1976 Beaune Teurons 1er and 1972 Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er, tasted side-by-side (see TNs). Wonderful harmony, elegance, and balance. Fully resolved tannins. Gorgeously mature. WOTN for me.

Winestreet Tastes an Abundance of Leroy: The color is a pale strawberry red. The nose is very enticing, offering musky sour cherry with orange notes, mushroom and leather. Refined and pleasing. On the palate this is surprisingly fresh, with red and black fruits, mineral and mushroom. Great flavor intensity throughout. Satisfying finish. This is the second time I have had this, and I think the first bottle was slightly better. However, I'm looking forward to trying this again in the near future (maybe Sunday!).

When in Romanée... (Eleven Madison Park): Mature but anonymous. While advanced in flavor, the fruit is still dense and glossy with an almost caramelized richness, but there isn't much else going on. For now it’s recognizable as Burgundy but nothing more specific or distinguished than that. Just a little more advancement and it wouldn’t be recognizable as anything but “old red wine.”

A few Saturday Burgs with Jeff and spouses. TNs: 85 DRC RSV, 66 Leroy, 96 Arnoux.: I've had this five times over the last few months, and this may have been the best bottle yet. It started out a touch reserved, but after an hour or so was just perfect. It was initially very fruit forward, and then towards the end it started showing somewhat caramelized. Very nice, and once open, intoxicating. Yum.

Light brick color; clear at the rim. Beautiful, high-toned red fruits, tea, mushrooms, and forest floor. Fragrant and harmonious, with a long finish. The tannins are totally resolved. A fantastic, fully mature Burgundy.

Pre-Harlan Warm-up at Brad England's House: The color is a faded, murky red. The nose is very enticing, offering a musky red fruit with orange notes complimented with mushroom and leather. On the palate this gives mature red fruit, good acidity, and a long finish. This wine has a great presence, and reminded me a bit of 1990 La Tache. I'd love to plan a main course around this wine, as it should be excellent if paired properly.

Vinotas offline. Brick colour. Full fruit, slightly decayed. Strawberry with cherry liqueur. Still light and balanced. Impossible to guess it is 38 years old. Very long and absolutely delicious. A show stopper at the offline. Silence fell as everyone took in the aroma. Thanks to Rainer Gunterman for a stunning mature Burgundy. s

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Lots here, but the balance of fruit vs earth/ mushroom is moving too much in the earth direction as the wine loses its brightness vs previous bottles. So it isn't coming across as quite as clean.
