Dark ruby with little color evolution. Soft tannins and medium-plus acidity. Balanced. Ripe black fruit, hints of barnyard and graphite. Leathery and earthy. Long finish.

I feel this wine still has a couple years left to it. Very balanced wine through the night. Opened around 3pm and served with ribeye steak. Wine worked extremely well with the meal. Wine has a beautiful bouquet. Palate has flavors of red fruit, some tannins, feels one dimensional without the food but still quite enjoyable. Overall a highly recommended wine.

Youthful appearance, nose is rather mute at this point, deep ruby red in colour, the palate is slightly harsh, a bit astringent and dry! Certainly not the best of Clos du Marquis I tasted!

13% alcohol. Very good cork with no wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead. Fairly dark colour with no sign of evolution. The nose is engaging, displaying cherries, although a whiff of alcohol comes through at times. The mouth is less satisfying, elegant but rather fluid; the best thing here is the mouthfeel. No oak in evidence, and the tannins are resolved. Somewhat anonymous, and I won't accept the excuse that the vintage is average (in some people's view), just look at what Lagrange produced that year. This bottle is at the level of a middling cru bourgeois, which is no problem except for the fact that it sells currently for the price of a lower classified growth. Not a repeat purchase.

13% alcohol. The cork is of above average length and good density, with very little wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead. Dark colour all the way to the rim. The nose is good, if not very intense, with blackcurrant aromas; unfortunately, the mouth is nowhere near as accomplished, being marred by excessive oak and a harsh finish and aftertaste (either too much press wine or unripe grapes, or both). It is not often that I complain about excessive oak in a Bordeaux of more than 15 years, but it is certainly the case here. It could be that it will eventually be absorbed, but I doubt it; it seems to me that the oak regimen was inappropriate relative to the substance of the juice. The harsh finish is even more problematic. I probably paid around 25€ for this wine and it is certainly not worth that, not to mention the ridiculous price quoted currently. Not a success, especially given the status of the property, and certainly not a repeat purchase; on the positive side, it gives me some understanding of the Bordeaux bashing that prevails in some sections of the wine drinking community. If all Bordeaux was like that, I would be happy never to drink another bottle.

A expression of the St.Julien terroir - that is what the wine professes to be and it does succeed to a large measure. It has a sparkling garnet color which is very pleasing to the eye ! The nose while not very expressive is not muted either and comes through with pleasant aromas of red fruit and secondary aromas of earth , black fruit and some barnyard aromas - quite pleasant - it is the luscious and very mouth filling taste on the palate that makes this wine quite nice. The fruit is apparent and the tannins are present but well resolved. The finish is medium long and very juicy. I think the Les Cases team has done a wonderful job with this Marquis. I think this is drinking well already and will stay that way maybe another 5-7 years. Good value for money buy for a great wine.

Second wine of Léoville-Las Cases always does well, even in an off year. Medium body, well constructed, refined tannins, the usual red fruit with a hint of cherry, I thought. I don't see this getting better, I think we're at its apogee now. A very pleasant bottle, what Bordeaux is (or should be) all about.

Tobacco and cedar on the nose with a touch of graphite, with some tight red fruit shining through. 11 years old? When most wines are falling apart at this age, it always amazes me to see Bordeaux just coming alive. This wine is quite classic in it's style, nice red and black current, fine grained tannins and bright acidity, with just a hint of the tobacco and spice. A great food wine. It will only get better. For now, for me- still too young.

Dark cherry colour. In the nose, it's elegant, well balanced and quite deep with dark berry fruit of cassis and blueberries also with some pencil shaving and a hint of spice from the wood. On the palate, it's very harmonic with ripe tannins, fresh, but very well integrated acidity and a mineralic finish. Classic and excellent.

I shouldn't be (but am) surprised to find this one mature! It's got that telltale slightly oxidized sweet cassis smell of mature cabernet, along with some mineral qualities. In the mouth it's got rich sweet fruit and some leather. There's a slight bite to the remaining tannins, and the finish isn't particularly long. Overall it's a nice drink, and 10 years after vintage I'm pretty convinced this particular bottle isn't getting any better. Nothing wrong here, drink 'em now! I'll open another quite soon.

Very deep colour - at first the nose and palate are very tight and give up very little but over the next 2 hours the wine blooms and fills out. After two hours notes of grapphite and dark fruit emerge from behind the quite austere structure. Very compact, tightly wound up fruit - restrained notes on the palate - very precise - there is not much energy being wasted on anything other than very precise notes. There is an austere structure here from which the fruit is just beginning to escape, much like all the other 2002s I have had. Certainly no rush to drink - but if you do then decant for 2-3 hours before drinking. Excellent but could do with more time in bottle.

This wine is probably only now entering its drinking window. We had it caraffed for two hours and in the decanter it was heady and full of red fruit. The nose, however, became fugitive in the glass. It drank well (with red meat), and was suggestive of black fruits and pencil lead as well as hints of chocolate. Light oak toast with a medium finish. We were expecting it to open more as the night went on, but it seemed to close down a bit. The general concensus was that it was very very good, but still needed another year or two of bottle aging.

Great and simple label that led my curiosity and hopefulness. Wouldn't it be great to find a still available 2002 Bordeaux that did not offend? Poured deep, rich purple with nose hints of coffee, tobacco and straw. Really nice! Tasted licorice and pepper along with an unpleasant acidity. Overall, this was light on fruit and more pepper and wood. I expected more from such a beautiful bottle of St. Julien.

Medium-full-bodied. Still somewaht young at seven years old, this is nevertheless drinking beautifully, with a spicy, earthy nose and gorgeous flavors of black currant, tar, leather, dried leaves, and a hint of wet stone. Balanced and very smooth. Excellent. Have had it several times, most recently after a '98-'02 Chateau Montelena Cab vertical, and it blew all the Montelenas out of the water.

Decanted for 1.5 hours. Nose: wet straw (or something organic, vegetal, and a little musky/musty), pencil shavings, minerals, and sweet beam of raspberry jam. Taste: gravel, mushrooms, bright red fruit.
The wine looks dark, but I don't get "dark" smells and tastes off it like some past tasters. I get bright tart ripe red fruit balanced by light earthy notes. Day 2 it evolved to more tarry smells.
It is pleasant and seems well made, but I'm not a Bordeaux drinker and I can think of many other bottles I'd much rather drop 40 bucks on. Maybe it looks good on you though?

Dark purple color. Somewhat muted nose, showing a green streak perhaps from less than optimally ripe merlot. However, the bottle wasn't perfect as after a while, it was clear that the TCA devil stroke again... Plastic foil over night removed most of the TCA and the wine was certainly drinkable. A somewhat curious combination of ripe Cabernet and grassy merlot with decent length. But not one of the best CdM of the last years. I hope the other bottles show better.
