Very, very good showing for this wine. Opened a few hours early, poured off a taste and decided not to decant until right before serving. Complex on the nose with gentle old stewed red fruits, and secondary wet leaves and soil tones, and a musky note running underneath it all. Really a lovely nose, pungent and compelling. The palate is great too, showing the maturity and complexity that is suggested by the nose. Good density and no excess, and quite long. Very, very good wine.

A close second in this terrific flight, with dark fruit profile I found extremely appealing. Just a touch rougher compared to the silky and refined RSV.

Precise wine, very clean and well delineated. Needed only a short time to breathe, and then maintained its excellent character all evening. Good now and plenty of stuffing to last many years.

A very good bottle of this provided by Ben Wallace at dinner at Crabtree Kittle House. Plenty of vigor with the high acidity of the vintage but it's balanced with good richness of black cherry fruit and lots of earthy depth. Finishes crisp and grippy with complex notes of minerals and Vosne-like spices.

HDH Burgundy Auction; 4/1/2016-4/2/2016 (Chicago, IL): Lots of really bright red fruit on the nose, but you can almost smell the acidity and structure. There's also a slight touch of earth on the nose but it's not as aromatically complete nor enticing as the 1997. The palate is really scrawny and emaciated, and showing lots of tart red fruit. Really tart and not exactly pleasant.

this wine drinks so nicely like it did 5 and 10 hers ago now it is a little softer with a subtle nose very smooth, light on the tounge. Nice muted but crisp fruits smooth finish. what a treat.

Deep color with no sign of maturity. Integrated nose of wet leaves, smoke, cinnamon, cloves and red fruits. Took 30 mins to an hour to open up. After 2 hours, nose was more prominent and more spice. Really elegant on the palate. Great balance of earth and good acidity. This is in a really good spot to drink and just starting to hint at secondary characteristics.

Dr. Bob and Elaine Hudak dinner at Lavandou (Lavandou, Washington DC): Initially muted/shutdown with a hint of stem and I am thinking, corked? With about 30 minutes of air, bright red fruits, cherry, sappy, tar and raw mushroom. It is a good example of the 96 red burgundy; very pure fruit expression, piercing acidity and noticeable structure. The fruit expression is neither opulent nor obvious perhaps a red equivalent of the 01 Les Clos. This is very pure, precise, vibrant and energetic. Perhaps some may ask for more fruits.

Showing very much as a mature (but not over the hill) wine, with evolved perfume. No browning or any muddied signs, so I guess it's just matured. It's medium weight (especially compared to the other 2 reds), and long on the finish. Very nice accompaniment to our completely savory Thanksgiving feast.

Surprisingly mature, much more developed than I'd expect a '96 to be with the red fruited flavours in the background and layers of mature mushroomy, black tea, earthy and sous bois notes dominating. It's very easy to drink with a medium weight, finessed mouthfeel, tannins fully integrated and bright acids keeping the flavours fresh and precise.

Funky nose in a good way. Big structure consistent with vintage. Needs time, as a bit out of balance. Enjoyed now however.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 4/1/2016-4/2/2016 (Tru Restaurant - Chicago IL): Small glass, brief note. Fully mature red fruit with good background spice. Moderate weight, but still some unresolved tannins and acid, so imperfect balance for right now.

Really opened up after 3h. Lovely pinot fruit, stawberry and acidity. Needs more 2-3 more years?

Shared with friends on Thanksgiving '06. Blew away the '03 Hanzell pinot, but not showing as well as the 2000 Dujac Clos de la Roche.
