Delicious wine. As it unfurls it has that classic Ridge round sweet fruit that I get on a lot of their older cabernet. It's so distinctive but it's hard for me to put in words. It almost has a lushness in its fruit but that makes it sound overly sweet which it's not at all. The tannins have given way as the wine just rolls down with ease. The fruit also has almost a savory note at the end that is very compelling.

Surprising dark color still. Bouquet is all currant and campfire. A touch of sweet fruit before the tannin smothers it leaving leather, cherries, and mint. Friendlier and enduring better than the '74 but still needed some meat to shine brightly.

Stunning. Sitting in a perfect place right now - fully mature, light, elegant, complex, regal......tobacco, leather, cherries, layers and layers of spices. Wow.

York Creek Vineyard (Los Altos): 13.4% ALC, 86% Cabernet, 14% Merlot - The nose was much like the 1979 and I assumed that they were close in age and definitely the same producer. This was very light colored on the rim, beginning to show some bricking. Cigar box on the nose and showing some lighter fruit and a nice but short finish.

With MPL and BLR at Singer & Foy. Very rich, ruby red. Attractive, interesting, spicy, fruity nose. A big wine, with very pleasing rich fruit flavors. Nice finish. 5-12-17-8: 92/100.

Dinner With Paul Draper in NYC - older vintages of Ridge (Cafe Boulud): Very good nose with black earth, purple fruits and minerals. The tannins are dry and the wine is lean and perhaps past its best but still shows lovely dark earth, tobacco and vegetal flavors.
