Delightful. Mouth-coating and viscous. Sweet without being unctuous. Botrytis prevalence rang through. A delicate bead of acid was a perfect counterpoint to the tropical fruits, lemon and orange blossoms, pineapple, quince, and candied orange zest. Tasted from 3 different bottles and all were consistent.

Brought by a friend for dessert and put on ice during dinner. Medium-gold. Some tartrate crystals. Muted botrytis nose with some sandalwood overtones. Acid was still there. Interesting how it has aged, but my 83’s have nothing to worry about.

Winefield's pre sale tasting: a modest vintage, but showing well with cinnamon, caramel, some wood, a dry twist (some botrytis?) and firm bitters; absolutely very interesting to taste.

What a fine showing, and the best Rieussec I have had in a few years. The 1980 Sauternes are very under-rated as a whole and there are some gems to be had from this lower-botrytis year. The additional acidity that this vintage carries as a consequence is holding these wines in good stead. Medium gold in colour, soaring aromatics, with a delicious line of acidity running through it. The palate is long and wonderfully poised from start to finish. This is a wine which has aged brilliantly, carrying its age so well, and was delightful to drink.
Deep vermilion-mahogany color. This is fairly sedate on both the nose and the palate, with muted flavors of ripe apricot, freshly whipped cream, and candied orange. There's little finish left to speak of, with all acidity having receded totally. Inoffensive, and just fine to wash down dessert with, but this would perhaps have best been enjoyed a decade ago.

Rieussec Tasting (Tom's House, Palo Alto): My #8, group's #2. Subtle but complex with spice, depth, apple; palate is full bodied, sweet, complex at first but fades a bit towards the mid to end, balanced, some fruit but difficult to pick out. 90

Fro magnum. Deep gold in colour. Lovely nose, honeyed fruit, flowers. Round with nice concentration on the palate, slightly spicy, enough freshness, good length.

Deep amber color and good viscosity. Citrus, floral, but very muted- you really have to get your nose inside the glass to smell anything (unless I just have a cold, which I don't think I have). Beautiful palate, lovely strong acidity and a 45 second finish. If the nose was a little bolder this would be a 95 pointer.

Orange metallic, amber color....buttered cinnamon toast, apricot, creme brule crust, candied orange rind nose. Very delicate and savory in the mouth...amazing caramelized sugars, orange rind, pineapple cake with apricot puree. The sweetness is still there, as well as some great savory complexities of dried florals and spices. Sweet cold orange tea, steeped with saffron! Plenty of acid left, more to the delicate side...VERY enjoyable! Wish I had more...

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #063; Game Dinner (By MM @ U/vdV): There are apricots and orange peel. Good acidity and bitterness as well. But overall the wine seems tired and too old. By far not as good as the previous bottle I tasted in 2011.

Amber color. Elegant bouquet with flowers. Not so very expressive. On the palate marzipan, pineapple and apricots. Pleasant balance between sweetness, acidity and bitterness. Full bodied and also elegant. Medium long finish. A nice surprise.

Rieussec Vertical (Vini di Domani, Eksel): Interesting (some might say odd) nose of paraffin wax, butterscotch, macaroons and old leather. Oily and opulent in the mouth, yellow fruit, honey, but also nice fresh acidity. Bouquet is somewhat challenging, but in the mouth this is surprisingly tasty. 16,5/20

Crystallization on the bottom of the cork. But wine appeared intact. Way past its prime. Tasted a bit like brandy with a hint of honey and carmel and a sour, watery finish. I don't think this was ever built to last this long.

Golden color, apricot honey nose. Some flavour, but more of a shadow of what this wine once was. Serviceable, little backbone/acid in evidence. A faded beauty.

This was wonderful despite the fact that we probably waited a little too long to drink this bottle. The backbone had softened somewhat, probably causing the finish to be shorter than it once was. Nevertheless, the richness of aromas and flavors was superb, ranging from vanilla and honey to flint, cedar and ash, and everything in between.

Académie des Cinquante 63rd Annual Dinner (Restaurant Olivijn, Haarlem, NL): Magnum. Deep orange gold colour, rich but lively; nose of honey, spice, orange peel and Alpine herbs; relatively dry palate with salty oak and slightly metallic acidity; drying finish.

This was past its prime and had lost too much fruit. It was not very sweet anymore. It still had some complexity, though. Good but not great.
