The Cab came through more than the Syrah on this bottle. The tannins are still pretty firm (but not course) and this wine has some time to go, but I'm a little concerned the layers of dark fruit might not hold up before the tannins get soft. A full bodied wine with staying power on the palate.

This really is my last bottle of this, and it's in perfect form right now. Menthol and a faint touch of barnyard on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, blackberry, currants, and white pepper, with faint tannins and a vanilla note on the medium to long finish, and moderate acidity. At $29, this was excellent value for the money. Too bad there's no more to be had; this tastes like it has three or four good years left in it.

Decanted for 4 hours, then poured back in the bottle, recorked with Vacuvin and tried the next day. Color is medium with just a hint of bricking. Nose is of mild fruit, camphor, cedar and fig. The attack is dominated by oak, with fruit emerging on the mid-palate and finishing fairly well. After an hour or so, the camphor burns off and more fruit emerges. Definitely old world in style. This is the penultimate bottle of my case and while I enjoyed it, I won't miss it.

Menthol on the nose. On the palate, dark fruit, white pepper, olive tapenade, and a touch of oaky vanilla on the medium finish, with good acidity and light tannins. This is my last of half a case. There has been some bottle variation on these, with one or two not showing as well; this final bottle is in peak form. Smooth as it is, the hint of unintegrated oak makes me think this should hold for another five years or so.

I should have kept my hands off it, but after 4 hours of decanting it finally smoothed out and came around. The black and blue fruits are layered and sweet with sweet Oak. The alcohol is still not fully resolved and this detracted from the experience by a point.

Camphor and a touch of strawberry on the nose. On the palate, dark fruit, menthol, and olive tapenade. The white pepper that was noticeable in earlier bottles was missing from this one. Still excellent, but missing a bit of the complexity I was expecting. The Havens funkiness I usually look forward to was muted as well. I can't tell whether this was an off bottle, or whether it is simply aging. I have one more of these, so I may find out from that.

Despite 4 hours of decanting time, the wine was still somewhat rough/gritty. There is, however, plenty going on with this wine and some very good black and blue (no surprise) fruits that emerge. I was afraid this wine might mature relatively early for a Havens product, but it is not. I've got another bottle that I'll keep set down for at least a couple more years and I expect this wine will smooth out and improve.

This has turned out to be really nice. The "barnyard" notes that used to be present have mostly dropped out, and what is left is blueberry and raspberry, black cherry, white pepper, and olive tapenade. It's better than it sounds -- this is one of those wines that you keep going back to for another sip.

Popped one hour before first pour, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium expressiveness, initially dominated by stinky barnyard funk which dissipated after 30 minutes revealing dark fruit, smoke and tobacco scents. Palate: Medium plus bodied with dark fruit up front - cassis and blueberry joined by hints of black pepper in the back-end. Finish: Medium length dominated by peppered dark fruit.

Seems like another case of extreme bottle variation in that last Havens vintage. The previous bottle I opened of this (both from the same supplier, I think) was great, but this one had some nasty brett that didn't entirely blow off even after a few hours of decanting.
It wasn't even that barnyard funkiness that can be pleasant in a lot of Bordeauxs. It just seemed to overpower the still robust fruit, giving it an unpleasant aroma and taste. A previous poster who compared it to raw sewage wasn't far off the mark.
If it hadn't at least mostly blown off after a while, I would have considered it a dumper. So, just be prepared to take your chances when opening these remaining Havens bottles. Definitely decant or aerate.

Wow, this wine was fantastic. Easily surpassed the prior wine, a highly rated super tuscan, especially for interest and complexity. This is ripe, but perfectly balanced and savory, somewhat exotic and very different and interesting. Beautifully balanced acidity and sneaky structure. A hint of heat detracts slightly, but otherwise i just love this. Both wine geeks and newbies should be able to appreciate how this bottle was drinking. People looking for this to be more like a cab may not get this since i always think the syrah dominates slightly.

Year-and-a-half since last tasting and this continues to be excellent. Some secondary notes coming out on the nose including damp earth and savory herbs, leading this to be more like a Walla Walla red. Still prominent cigar box and dark fruits on the finish. Should age nicely for five yrs.

Inky purple with ruby highlights. Blueberry, bramble, and a hint of cinnamin on the nose. Full bodied, intense plums, blackberries, smoke and pepper, but then strong acid and dry tannins overtake the fruit in a medium to long finish. So a bit austere for me, but still pretty good.

Drinking very nicely. Impeccable balance, but still a bit of oak to integrate. Somewhat exotic with some great purity of dark red/purple fruit, a bit of smoke, and some herbs and licorice and even some floral notes. Really, really good and likely will be for many years. Excellent aromatics and palate. I would hold another year for the oak to integrate. Maybe another point of upside potential. 92 for now. Even be better Night 2: This is a superior wine. Oak intergrates better and a bit rounder. Still plenty of nuance. 93. Great stuff.

Decant for one hour. Deep and rich powerful aroma of dark fruit and spice. Dark blueberry fruit on the initial attack. Kind of leaves a hole in the middle, but nice pepper on the finish. 3rd bottle. Best experience yet with this wine. Popped and poured with no decant time. Did not find it to get better with decant time like most tasting notes describe. Dark, dark, dark in glass, enjoyable lush nose and produces nice initial flavors on pallet or dark fruit. Had some awkwardness on finish---ultra tannic and acidic at same time made it slightly off balance. Still a great QPR.

Opened 1 hour before first pour and consumed over 4 hours. Nose: Medium expressiveness, initially smoke, blueberry and black berry. Later on more red fruit characteristics show - raspberry and cherry with some black pepper and rusty earthiness. Pretty interesting transformation on the nose over the 4 hour consumption period. Palate: Medium to full bodied, pretty acidic with mostly tart red fruit flavors. Kind of a disappointment after such an interesting nose. Finish: Medium length dominated by tart red fruit and black pepper. Easily a 90+ point nose but the palate and finish just don't stand up fro me.

Very dark red, almost black. Let decant for an hour and noticed steady, steep improvement. Blackberry preserves and a touch of cassis on the nose. I would alsswear that you can smell the delicious acids. This is an absolutely delicious wine that reminds me a great deal of Thierry Allemand's Cornas Syrah. The two could be at the same tasting and no one would bat an eye. The texture is a bit thick and fat, almost syrupy. Blackberries, strong Blueberries, Plums, distant red cherries, touches of coffee and tar on the finish. The Syrah shows much more than the Cabernet. This is a stellar wine and it makes me weep that Michael Haven is not making this anymore. Please, Mr. Haven, rise like the Phoenix (and give me a discount). I will buy more of this if I can find it.

Opened 1 hour before first pour, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Needs a good swirl to reveal blueberry, violets, and vanilla. Finish: Medium length, blue fruit showing but the black pepper dominates.

Loam and cinnamon on nose. Slightly bitter and hot on pallet but cassis and creamy mouthfeel is rewarding. Finish not too long, but long enough to feel the QPR on this wine is above average, especially considering it is a cabernet coming in at 1/3 the usual suspects price.

excellent value and a great wine. Drank half the bottle, put the cork in and drank the other half the next day. Day 2 was significantly better, as the dryness and tight tannins relaxed quite a bit. very well blended cab and syrah, showing characteristics of both. Dark fruit and spice on the nose, will open the others down the road and report out.

I opened a baby. A tart, tannic blend which needs more time in bottle. Dark, purple ink with a flower nose. After 3 hours opens to a big strong tasting syrah/cab. Big flavor of tobacco, red fruit and vanilla. The finish has a strong attack. This is a very complex wine that can only get better with time. Loved by our dinner guest, served with beef stew. $20 all in. A great QPR. 90 now...will report back in future. The 2004 vintage is drinking very well now. Patience will be rewarded.

Probably one of the best bottles of wine for the value that I've ever had, it's a shame that the winery has gone out of business. This wine is a bit more dry then most, but I tend to enjoy that, and it still has a good fruit balance along with some nice tannins.... very nice structure all together. Too bad this wine will not be around any longer.

Popped and poured. Cab and syrah. Big floral nose, almost perfume. On the palate you get some of those floral notes that came through in the nose, a generous helping of red fruit, and butter toffee. The tannins are firm but fine and not overpowering, particularly for a young wine. A pleasure to drink.

Excellent once again. Expressive nose of dark red fruit, spice/floral, and a hint of cigar box. Well balanced in the mouth. Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Opened 1 hour before first pour, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Needs a good swirl to reveal blueberry, violets, and vanilla. Palate: Good balance, showing blue fruits and a vegetable side (broccoli?), s definite black pepper sensation on the back end.

Great QPR at $17 per. Still slightly tannic with a touch of fruit and long finish. Can't go wrong.

A bit oaky night 1, but not overwhelming. Very good, especially night 2. Tastes like the 2006 Hudson with more structure(from the cab) and oak. Excellent, complex and savoury.
