Deep orange-gold with brass edges. Fairly intense aromas of salted, dried orange, wet straw, 'dry' honey rather than sweet (like a fynbos honey) and caramalised pineapples. Fairly evolved at 16 years, as one would expect. Full-bodied with moderate acidity, this is a rich wine with clear ripeness from the 2003 vintage. The immediate flavours on the palate are spice (gluhwein spices) with lots of quince, dried mandarin peel, acacia, chamomile tea and as the wine opens further, some beeswax, bitumen and even garrigue. There is a pithiness towards the finish yet a viscousness at the same time. The length is a little bitter and slightly stunted with hot, spiky alcohol. The wine is arguably past its best.

At Pcats tasting: Not very forthcoming on the nose. Sweat and oily entry with richness and fatness with a long, dry intense finish. (We don't drink / taste White Hermitage / Marsanne very often so the wine bamboozled the tasters). The quality of the wine was a standout.

Both bought on release and the last of a half case. One was horribly, massively corked, the other was pure middle aged white Rhone. Deepening golden yellow, wonderful nose, weighty but bright enough to pair well with scallop ceviche.

Conclusion : une beauté.

Monthly Tasting Group: Loads of CDP's and more (Meritage, St. Paul): Medium-dark gold color. Tasted one glass over 15 minutes plus. This seemed tired to me, showing some heat, there wasn't a lot of fruit, nutty, viscous, heavy, spice, minerals. No where near what the 2004 was recently. There is some diffeence of opinion on the drinking window of this vintage. This bottle suggests it may well be past its prime.

Popped and poured. Damn, it's shut down. The talcy oily floral flavors are there, they're just very muted. Not oxidized yet. Unbalanced heat, somewhat bitter. Lacking acid, a little too big for what's here. Bummer.

Gorgeous honey-gold colour. Aromas of paraffin, spice, meyer lemon rind, short pastry. Full-bodied, unctuous, spicy wine, with hints of rosemary oil, minerals, salt, apricot, short pastry, and warmth from the alcohol. Long finish, ~45-50s, with more meyer lemon rind, minerals, and white pepper. The texture of this wine has always been what I've loved about this wine. Once again, it didn't disappoint. I don't see this wine improving. Drink now.

9 from Hermitage, Hanna, Fonseca, Tokaji (Dale's): The first bottle was corked so, our host Dale opened a second. Golden color. The wine was short on the nose, with lots of air, some cantelope notes emerge. It was a very round wine that was quite soft. An interesting combination that I thought made it a couch potato. Somewhat bitter on the palate. I think you need to drink these young or after 10 years, but not at 7.

5th Annual Italian Offline Pre-Game (Simple Bistro, Toronto, Canada): Medium-gold colour. Aromas of melon, peach, allspice, baked apple pie/short pastry, lanolin. Full-bodied, unctuous wine, oily, spicy, with replays from nose. The pie crust really comes out on the palate. Long, long finish, ~45-50s with lemon peel, lanolin, minerals, and salt. While the palate has a "sweetness" to it due to the texture and fruit, it's very dry and clean on the finish. This is really outstanding stuff.

Has come together a ton since tasting at the winery a year ago (when the oak lent it a bitter aftertaste)... now the pure juicy honeyed fruits are there, viscous and oily on the palate, with a toastiness that is lower-key and fresh. Range of flavors and aromas consist of--truffled honey, ripe melon (yellow/green), spicy minerals, butterscotch, smoke.

Rhone Walk-around Tasting (Carolines Wine Shop): Mid-yellow-straw colour, the aromas display fresh earth, straw bales, plastic, quince and some sweetcorn (or buttered popcorn).
