Worryingly dark for it's age - a sort of burned brown. Cloudy too. Nose a little acetate like. It settled though to be a rather lovely wine. Some barley, orange and raisins came through on the palate. Long finish. Plenty of bite. Not very sweet in practice though the official RS levels are usual. I liked this though I do still wonder whether it was at it's best.

Very dark, no need to worry though, murky ( needs standing up before serving); raisins dominate; extremely sweet, enough acidity to prevent cloying;yet to fully knit -will it ever? One dimensional.

Koperkleurig. Zeer geconcentreerd van smaak met rozijn, mandarijn, abrikoos, honing en boenwas. De zuren zitten wat verstopt achter de hoeveelheid suiker.Een verleidelijk glas.

Burgundy WIMPS 2012 'Charles the Fat' table (The Ledbury, London): Deep orange. Incredibly sweet and painfully intense mandarin. A dentist's nightmare. Good balancing acidity but less obvious than a year or two ago - now needs to be put away to allow the sugar to come back in to balance **(**)

Fantastic stickie, intensely sweet but very nicely balanced by the high acidity. I reckon this will age well for 15+ years. Very unique and amazing value.

Amber; touch oxidative which did blow off overnight; very sweet, toffee apples, too cloying at this stage, compressed. Next day: mallow & concentration showed. This needs time but unsure how it will turn out. Aware of postive reception by many others, just may not be to my style. De Trafford's version was superior a couple of years ago. Won't open the next for a few years.

An unscheduled replacement for that ghastly Jasnieres - this was its usual self - deep concentrated sweet raisin fruit, but with the acidity to lift it - brilliant

Keith's Christmas Ledbury Bash (The Ledbury, London): Deeper, more mid-amber than the Diz 99. Nose dominated by VA - very acetone. Very sweet, less obvious acidity than the Tokaji though it must have a fair amount and a slightly caramel finish. Again pretty well balanced but the nose puts me off somewhat. Still very good though. ****

Luminous coppery orange. Dense, waxy nose with orange rind and burnt sugar. Intensely sweet but well balanced with lively acidity. Opulent and viscous on the palate; rich orange barley, candied fruit, marmalade and a hint of toffee apple. Lovely.

1989 revisited offline (Hambleton Hall, Rutland): A darker colour than you might expect. The nose has apricots, apricots, some more apricots, finished off with a glaze of apricot jam. Really lovely on the palate. Really luscious. There's powerful acidity there, but it's not too separate.

South African 'Picnic' offline (DML, London): Bright mid-gold colour. Wow! Wonderful lifted nose that sears out of the glass. Very complex. Distinct toasted granary wholemeal bread nose. Later, nuts and honey, then marmalade and dried apricots. The palate was beautifully light, clean and sumptuous with orangeyness. Good acidity too. Nicely different from the usual sauternes style.

wine-pages.com SuperBOWL 2009 (Glasgow): A very attractive, orangey crème brûlée nose. Lovely fresh palate. Sweet and fresh at the same time, this is in a hugely enjoyable style. Delicious.

Another trip to The Sampler (The Sampler (Upper Street, Islington, London)): Smells and tastes of stale bread. Going the way of all flesh, this one. A shame, because there seems some fantastic stuff going on behind it. Would like to try again. £19/half bottle.
