Still lots of life left on this one. Lots of tannins and acidity. Rootbeer flavors with a tinge of orange marmalade. A bit of heat and dusty chocolate on the finish.

Racey nose. Nice color with some bricking. Good acid and dark fruit. Somewhat loose and unfocused with a wooden edge trying to hold things together. Next day much better with emergence of fruit and edge faded.

My best (and last) bottle of this wine. Spectacular nose (crushed rocks, red sour cherries, hints of orange rind, rose petals). Delicious on the palate too - fruit, acidity, minerality. Great balance. Hints of tertiary notes add complexity. Tannins and acidity still there, and suggest this should continue to age well for a few more yrs. If I had more (which, sadly, I do not), I would revisit in 2020.

Very similar to previous bottle (so won’t repeat myself). My hunch is that this could improve in the next 2-3 yrs, so I will try to stay away from my remaining bottle for a while.
Enjoyable, but not quite at the level of some mature Caleras I have had - i.e. still unevolved, little in the way of tertiaries, not particularly complex. My hunch is that this could improve in the next 2-3 yrs, but I am not certain of it. Right now, the nose is delicious (crushed rocks, black cherries, hints of orange rind, hints of rose petals). The palate is a bit simpler though - still, great minerality, good fruit, perhaps a touch short of acidity. I was surprised to see a still fairly robust (for a Pinot) tannic structure. Hopefully these tannins, coupled with the remaining fruit, will carry this wine for a few more yrs - in the hope that interesting tertiaries will surface.

A relatively dark wine for a pinot noir. Shows a nice nose of cherry and brush. On the palate, the wine shows cherry, plum, and some mint. The tannins could still use a little time to soften. The finish on this particular bottle was a little flat.

I enjoyed this wine. Paired with heirloom tomato Caprese salad mixed boiled grains with truffle oil and a nice strip steak with sauteed mushroom topper. Was a pleasant accompaniment without overpowering. Medium body and finish

Private Tasting: Best of the US (Waterford Wine, Milwaukee): First off I want to make it clear the rating is time stamped. I'm thinking this will be a 93 pointer in 2-5 years. Looks and feels incredibly youthful. Dark colour, just a very slight tawny hint to the rim. Cherry, brambly aromas. Perfumed fruit, lifted with a herbal/eucalypt note. The palate is very tannic, with a great depth of fruit. Has nice level of acidity to provide some balance to what is still quite an oaky, chewy mouthful. It has tremendous length and plenty of life ahead of it. And as I said up front, will be more approachable in a few years.

1278 vines/acre at 2,400 feet above sea level, planted in 1998/2001; yield of 3.29 tons/acre (= 49.24 hl/ha). Quite a big wine at 14.5%, much more open than the 2007 was in August 2011; ripe fruit becomes richer with air and more plummy, spicy warmth from the perfectly absorbed (30% new) oak, lovely floral notes, limestone minerality; plummy, less elegant than the cooler 2007, quite masculine tannins, the bitters are quite coarse for a while but then turn more velvety; not as Burgundian as the 2007, quite extracted, good length but some back-end heat. Lacks some charm, there is an edge to it, perhaps needs more time to come together?

4 Days in Las Vegas; 6/1/2011-6/4/2011 (Las Vegas, NV): This didn't have the complexity or depth that the 2006 Selleck had - with more prouncounced rich red fruit, and a grapiness component that went from concerning to non-existent. At time this did shed its lush fruit to show more floral and mineral driven elegance, but overall couldn't piece it all together like the Selleck did.

Harsh tannins upon opening, but with an hour of decanting, this softened and opened up quite nicely. 91 now with room to grow. I'll wait 5 years before opening my other bottle.

Very similar to the Mills, with perhaps a shade less fruit but more interesting spice. My favorite nose of the range up to this point. Has a broad feel, not a huge amount of focus or definition yet at this point. 90-91

Lots of complexity on the flavor profile on this one. Nose of vegetal earth and cherries. Palate of spice, cherries, cola and mocha. Medium-bodied and good acids cutting through the duck it was paired with.

Dinner in Vegas. Sweet nose of cherries, vanilla, fruitcake. Tastes very RRV, with sweet red fruit, earth, plums. Not very complex, but easy to like.

Very nice bottle of wine. Pretty aromatics of perfumed red fruit followed by dark fruit that was ripe but had great weight and balance.

Not ready to drink yet so the rating doesn't apply. Lots of acid and tannins. Rooty. FOrest floor. Cherry cola. Pomagranite.

Rather warm with decent fruit, but could use more structure. A reasonable bottle overall, though not overly memorable.
